    Bruh u gotta listen to his other albums in order, the way his sound progresses is super linear and clear as day. Just hearing his songwriting evolve through each album is cool as hell

    I love this album! Condor Ave is one of my favorites. What I gather is it's about a guy that had a fight with his girlfriend, a particularly bad one, and she left in a hurry and got in a car accident and died. The way he talks about her mail and clothes is particularly poignant. With that said, Roman Candle's a great album but it's Elliott before he'd really found his sound, he sings a lot deeper on this album than any of his other albums, this was before radiohead became really big in the US and you didn't really hear any higher pitched male tones, it was more grungy/low particularly in the Portland music scenes. His self titled "Elliott Smith" album is great and maybe my favorite, Elliott Smith found is stride on this album but still kept it basic and super intimate, and with each album he polishes and layers. By Figure 8, he tries a lot of different sounds/genres and instruments and you can feel his influence from the Beatles. It was the last album he released before his death. From a basement on the hill was excellent and released shortly after his death, he plays around with sound and samples more than any of his other albums. People tend to limit Elliott Smith to "sad songs" but honestly I find each album had a different sound and with each album he experimented more and more. New Moon was released in 2007 and was 2 disks filled with old unreleased music, some of which were alternate versions of released songs (I believe it was from between his self titled and Either/Or), he made so much music.

    easily my favorite artist and i think he was the best songwriter of all time. he didnt write a single bad song and has so much music to offer. i highly recommend listening to his other albums, particularly from a basement on the hill. i also wanted to suggest reacting to the album new plastic ideas by unwound, its an incredible record.

      Who else thinks his double album New Moon is amazing???? As an aspiring songwriter to think that many of those songs were considered not worthy by Elliott to go on the album(s) he worked on at the time they were recorded is UTTERLY mind blowing?! If I could write just ONE song of that caliber, i could die a satisfied man.

    I was an aspiring songwriter when I moved to Portland, Oregon in `96 from a small S.E Washington town. I loved the tight knit music scene and got to work immediately to fit in however I could so I found a flexible job at a brewpub(when the word meant something), and took different non paying positions at a few local record labels, played as much music with as many locals as I could manage and eventually got a decent paying gig at a cool indie label (still kept my bar gig). One of the first "stars" of the local music scene was of course Elliott Smith. At the time only 2 solo records of his existed and he'd just quit his rock band Heat Miser.
    Aren't we glad he had to express himself, by himself? When I see the beatific look on your young face Snowy at those key moments, of the gorgeous songs you listened to here, this debut by this super talented, and modest but tortured artíste.... I see myself on my first reveal. I'm sure you'll agree when you hear the 2nd release the self titled. He gets better And betTER and BETTER! AND so counted myself lucky my work involved having to go out night after night and see great shows ALL the time, post-grunge-hype then I witnessed my first small club show of his at CJ's and I almost gave up my dreams- he was a genius and a trainwreck all in one... and he was one of us, we thought he was ours. This started an obsession that very nearly killed me. I could go on and on but when he died in 2003 I felt I'd lost part of me. ALL his work is so insanely beautiful but so full of self hatred and despair and you knew much of these subjects and topics weren't just characters or fiction. His music took me down a dark path and in my opinion seduced me completely and totally. I had to realize that I can't really listen to his music anymore not because I don't want to but because sometimes something so raw, real and yet intangible like Elliotts music can be harmfully real. Peace

      @snowy6301  Před 2 lety +1

    I think to appreciate Elliot Smith for his lyricism and quiet melodic sadness is fairly easy. Relating to his excruciating pain and damning lyrics. That’s a whole different story. Either way he’s a beautiful musician.

    Thank you for this reaction, Elliott Smith is a truly incredible songwriter. In a similar vain, I would highly recommend checking out Nick Drake’s album Pink Moon, I feel like it should be considered essential listening lol. Both him and Elliott Smith are insanely talented artists, but with Nick Drake, I sadly feel as though he’ll always remain very under appreciated, as he is pretty far from being a household name. Definitely check him out though : )… I’d love to hear your thoughts on him and his music.

    2:40 that chorus is more like a reflection on his past (the whole song in fact) and his relation with his step-dad Charlie, who also appears in other songs almost like a character. Don't know if he was called Charlie as a fact, but probably.

      Damn too bad! I played Blackbird for a singing class once. I was suuuuper nervous. Messed up a lot. The teacher would give you instructions to improve your singing while you were still up there (typically after you play through the song fully once) and you would follow the instructions in front of the whole class.
      As nervous as I was in the beginning, eventually the nerves just go away because you're the center of attention for so long and messing up in front of everyone but you realize nothing bad happens.
