  • After years of waiting, the Valley Railroad's 97 returned to steam. After making her first test run on October 26, 2018, 97 served as the lead engine for the Mass Bay RR Enthusiasts's double-headed charter. The many train enthusiasts at the event were not disappointed with the beauty and power of the VRR's favorite locomotive. Thank you to the VRR shop crew for working hard to gives us ole' 97! Your hard work will not go unappreciated.

    97 was built in 1923, not 1926. She was one of three identical consolidations that were built on speculation for sale to Cuba, which didn't work out. The engine sat at Alco until the Birmingham Southeastern picked it up. The date on the number plate is that it was sold, not the year it was built.

    • @Joe_Cassineri
      @Joe_Cassineri  Před 4 lety +1

      Seth Simmons I am aware of the difference in the two dates, although I am not sure as to why I chose to use the sold date in the video. Do you know why the plate reads the sold year as opposed to the manufactured one?

      0475 Joe not quite sure, that would be a question for the Valley maintenance staff.

    Damn I wish I was there. That is a rare catch nowadays. For a steam guy like me, those are money shots all day long.

  • @TexasRailfan21-RailfanRyan

    I sincerely hope that the 97 will be back running for the Connecticut Valley Railroad for a long time I hope this was not a one-time thing

    • @Joe_Cassineri
      @Joe_Cassineri  Před 5 lety +1

      This is defiantly not a one time thing. The VRR has spent an enormous amount of money to get her running by this holiday season. She will be pulling the third train set during this year's North Pole Express trains.

      0475 Joe good to hear! How long do you think it will be before she returns to being in the regular rotation with the other steamers?

    • @Joe_Cassineri
      @Joe_Cassineri  Před 4 lety +1

      mark hathaway At the moment there is no certain answer. The locomotive still has mechanical issues the shop is currently addressing. By North Pole she should be at good operating condition, however I’m not entirely sure we’ll see her in the regular rotation for the 2020 season. If I get any new information regarding her return, I will be sure to reply to this comment and let you know. 97 currently sits in the north end of the shop, and on most days the bay door is left open for people to view the locomotive, if you wanted to see what work they are doing.

      @@Joe_Cassineri Thanks for the info! 97 is a great locomotive. The Valley Railroad is the best when it comes to steam locomotives. I am sure they will do a great job with the continued restoration of 97. I look forward to seeing her run this Christmas season. Let’s keep our fingers crossed she will be returned to the regular rotation by 2021. What better way to celebrate the railroad's 50th birthday than to have 97 returning to full time operations on the steam-riverboat excursions.

    Crossings must have been packed.

      @Joe_Cassineri  Před 5 lety

      I'd say an average of 8-12 people at the popular spots. The crossings from Old Saybrook to Essex were especially packed.

    • @jonathanp935
      @jonathanp935 Před 5 lety

      @@Joe_Cassineri will be packed come Christmas time. I might be up there for a day. Three steam engines fired up at the same time equals a good time for railfans. I'm thinking about just staying at the station because the three trainsets will be arriving and departing constantly

    • @Joe_Cassineri
      @Joe_Cassineri  Před 5 lety

      @@jonathanp935 Defiantly, I'll probably be staying at the station as well, because the triple steam will occur at night, making photos easier.

    • @jonathanp935
      @jonathanp935 Před 5 lety

      Why not during the day as well? I might be there some day during the season (hopefully) Any good crossings up there other than old deep river road or railroad ave in chester?

    • @Joe_Cassineri
      @Joe_Cassineri  Před 5 lety +1

      @@jonathanp935 I'll defiantly photograph daytime trains, but I believe 97 will be running during night time trains. This could change. Other than what you mentioned, there is Dump Road, Commerce Crossing, Rattling Valley Road, Essex Street, Deep River Landing, Dock Road, Ferry Road, Parker's Point Road, the broadway curve, and Goodspeed station.
