  • Today I'm showing my wife Superman Returns for the first time!
While Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey) plots to destroy him once and for all, the Man of Steel (Brandon Routh) returns after a long absence to a much-changed world. Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth) has moved on with her life, and society has learned to survive without him. Superman must find a way to reconnect with her and find his place in a world that may no longer need him.

There is a scene where Brandon Routh's Superman is looking around the ruins of Krypton that was cut from the start of the movie. They should have left that scene in. It would have been a great start to the movie.

Holden, it’s been established in comics that Superman possess a kind of bio-field that he can extend around people and objects this is why he a regular human can fly w/ him and breathe, not freeze and why massive objects like ships and submarines don’t tear apart when he’s lifting them. I don’t know if this has been retconned away but I always thought it was a great comic book reason that supported the science/biology of Superman.

I think it was a mistake not to use him further. I know Lex was integral to the plot, but I would have liked to have seen him with the other heroes, instead of Lex. We saw so much of Lex before that, and after that in the Supergirl show, that I just kinda got burned out on Lex Luthor, even before the show (and the Arrowverse) began to severely decay.
Especially since he was so different than the 'regular' Superman on the shows. It was crazy to see how much more powerful he was, and that he probably would have killed the other Clark if Lois wasn't there. And now with the whole mess with HBO, they have this perfect medium with which to do a miniseries with him, and they're doing nothing with it. It just sucks.

I suppose the easiest way to reconcile the continuity is to say that Superman III happens a short time after Superman Returns. It sorta helps to explain why Clark is open to a new love interest in the third movie, right? And who's to say that Richard isn't off somewhere in the background raising Superman's illegitimate son while Kal-El ponders the pros and cons of dating a single mom from Smallville? Too bad that both Lana and Richard died in that horrible off-screen tragedy between III and IV, though.

I like that Kevin Spacey plays Lex mostly on the "always thinking and calculating" side of his personality. They very easily could have had Lex get angry or freak out when they told him Boris got hit with the piano. But he instantly started calculating the meaning of what they said rather than spontaneously react. And then very calmly say "Oh, we've got to go." with just a small, tiny hint of panic.

TRIVIA: The older lady that passes at the beginning of the film is Noel Neill, who was the original Lois Lane from both the radio show and The Adventures of Superman TV series. The radio show and TV series is where the "It's a bird, it's a plane..." phrase came from.

Thankfully it was a pretty smooth production process aside from a few issues during the cinetape transfer. Bryan Singer was at the demonstration we put out in early 2005 for the genesis camera. The “It’s a bird, it's a plane, it's Superman!” line actually isn’t from the comics, though it would later be referenced in them throughout the years. Obviously they never told him Richard wasn’t his father and Richard wanted to play that role in Jason’s life so it played out that way. Now that the excitement has died down and Jason is beginning to demonstrate his Kryptonian heritage, I’m sure a confab will take place. He’ll need guidance.
What I’m curious about is why Jason seemed to be so sickly. Might Lois, being aware of who the daddy is, is already concocting a secret identity for him to fall back on when he’s not the new Superman? Or do Kryptonian’s start weaker on Earth before gaining their abilities? Kinda like they did in ‘Man of Steel’? Would that explain why young Clark is wearing glasses while leaping through the corn fields because that’s always struck me as odd.

One specific power that doesn't really get any mention is That Superman can generate heat. Because his body takes in solar energy his body can also give off heat. This is how they explain how he can fly fairly high with Lois wearing thin clothes, or nightwear (like in the first move)

@@jessecortez9449 Not so sure that's really a thing. But I think you meant solar irradiated, not eradicated. As for holding the plane, that's just decades of practicing with his physical strength. We see what can happen if he holds on with too much force; he tore the wing off. There's even a similar scene in the animated series where he grabs the tail of a falling plane and pulls the back fin right off. It's simply balancing his strength vs the object.

In the movie, where Superman catches Kitty's car just before it careens into the café, the wide shot shows him holding the underside of the car near the rear axle, with the nose of the car pointed down at the ground. At one point, Tim Burton was going to direct SUPERMAN LIVES a cancelled version of the Man Of Steel, and that Nic Cage was going to play the titular superhero.
Jon Peters, the film producer, didn't want to see Superman fly, he didn't want him to see have the iconic suit, because h thought the colors were "gay", and he wanted him to fight a giant mechanical spider at the films climax. Kevin Smith(Clerks, Dogma, Chasing Amy, Mallrats) wrote 5-6 drafts of the script to see what would work and what didn't work.
One draft of the script was going to have Lex Luthor as a CIA operative who wants to find Superman and kill him, as he thinks that Superman is a threat to national security.
Another draft had Superman who gets killed by Doomsday, but Lois gives birth to a new Superman after he grows into an adult in 2 weeks where he fights off Braniac and wins.
Cameras were about to role, as they spent $40 million dollars, of it's projected$100 million dollar budget, on the costumes and sets, but Jon Peters called Burton telling him that the movie was scrapped.
Burton went on to make Sleepy Hollow for Paramount and PLANET OF THE APES for Fox, while Jon Peters produced WILD WILD WEST with a giant mechanical spider at the end.

I believe the "It's a bird, it's a plane, it's Superman" saying came from the radio play in the 1940's. The old radio show added other things to the lore, such as Kryptonite, because when the voice actor who played Superman was on vacation, they came of with the idea, and some other guy would moan and groan in pain as Superman being exposed to the toxic radiation.
Speaking of planes, if you think back to the first season of The Boys where Maave begs Homelander to save the plane, he was voicing many of the same physics reasons it wouldn't work, and at least this movie tries to illustrate how challenging the concept is.
I agree what held the movie back was inserting Brandon Routh into the Reeves continuity. Had they gone with an original story, I think it would have had a stronger chance. But I think they were to stuck on the idea of Lois having a son from their night in Superman II, and a chance to use Marlon Brando's lines from the earlier films. I agree this is better than III and IV, and certainly better than what the Tim Burton/Nicolas Cage project would have been.
Superman was the first character who we define as a Superhero. Prior to that, comic books were a collection of reprinted newspaper comic strips and not much original content. Superman was the character that created the genre, and was the flagship of DC for many years before Batman eclipsed him in popularity and sales

The elderly sugar mama of Lex Luthor at the beginning was played by Noel Neill, who was Lois Lane in the color episodes of The Adventures of Superman from 1954 to 1958. The bartender at the press pub near The Daily Planet was played by Jack Larson, who was Jimmy Olsen for the 1951 Superman theatrical film and subsequent entire TV series from 1952 to 1958. Superman's catch and lowering of the antique automobile was a re-creation of the cover art for the very first appearance of Superman in 1938. (OK, I just saw that you knew that!) "Look, up in the sky!" "It's a bird!" "It's a plane!" though used in the introduction to the TV series, I believe was created by the writers of the radio series, who also invented his ability to fly among other expansions of his powers and abilities, which was originally just "the power to leap tall buildings in a single bound." The radio series also invented Perry White, Jimmy Olson, Inspector Henderson, and Kryptonite. The radio Superman also voiced the 1966 cartoon series narrated by Ted Knight, by which time the comics had given him heat vision inspired by the newly invented laser beam.

Brandon was signed on for 2 more sequels and there was a rumor that Brandon's Superman would meet/team up with Christian Bale's Batman. But Christopher Nolan said the Dark Knight Franchise was a stand alone. So we know that Batman and Aquaman are in the Singerverse. The first time I saw this movie was at a single screen theater, Seattle's Cinerama, and being a single screen theater they went all out and the entire place was decked out for the film, Audio from Brando's speach and the superman theme were playing over the speakers in the lobby and all throughout the theater. Props from the Reeve's movies were on display making it impossible not to get hyped for the movie. When we left the theater, we thought this movie was the greatest thing ever. With subsequent viewings I have come to realize that the unique environment, and the entire expierience, had so much to do with that. But it still holds a special place in my heart.
While I think Brandon Routh would have made a fine Superman to make additional movies with, the kid was the biggest problem in my eyes. He presented the Jar-Jar Binks problem. An key character that could not be dropped or ignored in future movies that would be impossible to make likeable. Superman would either have to go on his adventures with a precocious Superboy at his side or the boy would always have to be Superman's weakness. It was a fun nod and a wink at the events in the Fortress of Solitude in Superman II but really wrote the entire thing into a corner. Plus, in Superman II, Superman gave up his powers before his night with Lois so why should this kid have powers, or is that why the kid had health problems, having come from a weakend version of Superman's genes?
Thank you for another fine reaction, and for sparing us from Superman III & IV...

Also, that little "It's a bird, it's a plane" exchange was used as a Teaser for this movie.

To be fair Superman gives off some kind of forcefield when grabbing objects way bigger than himself. Grabs the end of a ship and just lifts the entire thing without ripping it in half. Compared to Hulk who would just smash and go through objects

Superman Returns was the movie that introduced me to Superman as a kid, right along with the Superman Animated series and the two Justice League Animated series. I have watched this movie literally hundreds of times (probably the same amount of times that i have watched Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars) and i still get kinda teary eyed when Superman gets brutally beaten and stabbed by Lex Luthor. This movie still is my favorite Superman movie and Brandon Routh is still my favorite Superman to this day.
I didn't have the pleasure to see Christopher Reeve as Superman until much later as an adult and when i did finally see him, i came to love him as much as i loved Routh. They are, to me, the most definitive versions of Superman we have had in live action.
