I defend the final fight by thinking about how it's only Superman’s 2nd fight. He was also just immediately up against other Kryptonians, there was no in-between like bank robbers or lower tier supervillains. Also, Zod would not have allowed him to help people during the fight, he would want as many deaths as possible.

    • @isaacfloyd4023
      @isaacfloyd4023 Před 3 lety +49

Exactly. Zod made it very clear that the only goal he had at that point was death and destruction. Zod would have started offing people immediately if Cal had tried taking the fight somewhere else. Not to mention every building that fell was due to Zods actions. Zod slicing a building down with his heat vision. Zod tossing Cal through the buildings by his cape. Zod kicking an oil tanker into a building. Zod destroying Wayne's satellite ultimately causing falling debris. Idk where people get the idea that the deaths of those people were Cal's fault.

You know it's a movie so you know they do things like that. You are criticizing one but you're not criticizing the other for the same thing. The Jonathan and young Clark bit I feel gets missed.
Johnathan was scared for his son. His son is an alien. An alien with incredible powers. He was scared that what if he was discovered when, not just the world, but Clark himself wasn't ready?
And the parent in him, for that moment, only cared for his son. He'd rather others die than him be exposed to the dangers. And you could see that after he said it, he looked regretful. That he didn't mean it.
It's something I could relate to. The fear that your child could be in danger. That harm could come. It was a powerful moment. And one I believe Johnathan may have felt, but only said it because he was scared for his own son.

He would have turned out like Homelander. In BvS as a grown man he found it impossible to just exist in the world in the first place. Again that scene plays on the theme of whether it is for the greater good that his secret no be revealed yet. A bus of schoolchildren would objectively pale in comparison to the wider consequences of Superman existing would bring. Like Jonathan says "this thing is bigger than you or me".

OF COURSE he was hesitant to kill Zod. This is the last person alive from his culture. Killing Zod would mean Clark is TRULY alone.

I love everything about this movie. For me, it's 10/10. I love Jonathan Kent's portrayal in this. He isn't saying that Clark should have let the kids die, just that Clark has to consider the ramifications of people finding out the truth about him, and Jonathan wants to preserve his son for as long as he can, because he knows how people would react and he wants to protect him. Is it selfish? Maybe, but it's also very real and human. Of course a parent would want to protect their child from fear, ridicule, and persecution. And of course he knows Clark could have saved him during the tornado, but he still wanted to protect his son for as long as he could, believing it so much he was willing to die to protect him. And I love that scene for Clark, too. He knows he has the ability to save his father, but he has to choose not to in order to honor him. Jonathan never wanted Clark to not be heroic, he just wanted to make sure that Clark was ready to bear the responsibility and consequences. He always knew Clark would change the world. He just wanted to prolong it as long as he could, for his son's sake. I will never dislike anything about that.

You should be quiet when someone is watching a film for the first time so they can absorb the film fully and form their own opinion which is hard to do when you keep joking in every serious scene and complaining about things you don't like. I think Clark was holding back in the sense that he didn’t want to kill Zod. We might think, “Come on, just kill him,” but Clark has never killed before. I think he was trying to stop Zod without killing him, but Zod was fighting to the death. I think that’s why Zod kept saying things like, “There’s only one way this ends, Kal!” Zod could tell Clark wasn’t fighting to the death, but Zod was. That family made Clark reconsider not because of who they were specifically, but because that’s when he accepted that Zod would never EVER stop. They can’t arrest him (we saw how well that went with Clark), and they have no place to keep him contained. That’s why Clark shouts “Stop!” And Zod says, “Never.” Clark realizes that killing Zod is the only way to stop him. You may not agree with Superman killing someone (I’m not sure how I feel about it), but I think the movie was trying to show us he wasn’t fighting to the death like Zod until that moment. Holden, buddy ive been watching you since your first few videos but sometimes can the comedy be reigned in a little? It just comes off forced and a attempt to be funny during the more dramatic moments, it was even worse during the more important scenes, i feel like when comments like that are made it ruins what the movie is trying to make you feel and what it's trying to convey. (Esp to matt since we want him to feel the movie and that must be difficult when everything is made into a joke, literally everthiing) By the comment section you can see that a lot of us were really looking forward to with anticipation for this review and it just seemed like it was made into a attempt of how many quips could you get out. Matt is sitting taking it in when you're just turning what is a dramatic scene into a personal stand up routine. It's all love man but damn, not really happy about it.

This is one of my favorite DCEU movies. It does have it flaws but the philosophy is so compelling and good. I honestly never get overwhelmed with the long final fight scene, I love it. And in regards to the final fight, the focus is on Zod and Superman but is also focused on the people in the ground. When you have 2 beings who are literally gods there’s going to be a lot of destruction. And it’s supposed to focus on one of the philosophy’s in the movie, which is kinda similar to Spocks “do the needs of the few outweigh the needs of the many”. And that question is going to have its consequences that Superman is going to have to face in the future. He’s a new superhero, he’s still learning what he can do and how he can control it. He’s gonna be a bull in a China shop and it’s gonna get messy. But as long as a few people are safe and alive, he feels he’s doing enough. And also in regards to Jonathan Kent’s death, look at it realistic if you can, if a person came all of a sudden and had god like powers, how do you think the people of earth would react to that? The reacted how they would when Zod came in. Full military reaction. This isn’t Christopher Reeves Superman. This is a Superman in a Post 9/11 world where we don’t trust what we don’t understand and we fear something that is out of our control. And finally in regards to him killing Zod, Superman doesn’t kill. He never has. He did once in the comics and it destroyed him. This isn’t Marvel. Iron Man kills. Superman does not. Yes civilians died but 1. He’s one man, he may be a god but he can’t be everywhere 2. He was preoccupied and 3. He knew he needed to stop the machines and Zod in order to save people This is DC. Different rules.

And the Synder Cut was an even bigger tweak filled with fan service. But it ultimately still failed to understand Superman. Great video.
I can't say this is my favourite Superman movie, but I know exactly where Snyder was going with this and he kind of succeeded if you think about it. Yes, some elements are janky and make little sense if you analyze it, but they can all be explained (it's what they did with the sequels actually, used them to explain some things the audience didn't get and was complaining about).
For me, the death of many vs death of few is shifting, depending on point of view. Until that final showdown with Zodd on the ground with people in the building only a few meters away they were, in Kal's mind, equal variables. Because he did not see them their value was constant as an anonymous human being. It has been touched on in animated movies and shows as well as in original comics, that even he can't save everyone, only those in front of him. And that's what the last scene of the fight is, really. He's been doing it the entire movie, but you only see the impact of it at the end, where yes, he tries to save mankind as a whole, but he only goes beyond his strict code when he is about to have a major PTSD from when his dad died, by witnessing innocent people die in front of him, and him being able to stop it and not doing it. That is why he killed Zodd, and why those people on the ground next to him meant more at that moment than the entire Kryptonian race in Codex or even entire human race he already decided to protect from Zodd and his goons...
Sorry about the lengthy comment :P Can't wait for the rest of DCEU.

Jeremy kind of misunderstood the final fight. He talks about how you care more about the innocent people dying than the main characters but that was the point. Zack Snyder said it himself that with two overpowered characters fighting, he wanted to make you feel the gravity of their actions. He wanted you to realize that when two god powered people fight there is going to be a lot of destruction and death. Making a fight like in the Avengers where they ignore people dying and the characters are fighting while smiling and throwing jokes is unrealistic.

Snyder went too far though. It makes Superman look callous and unconcerned with the innocent bystanders. Plus at a certain point it feels like spectacle with no substance. Cut the final fight down to 1/3 of the runtime and it might be decent.

@@nicolasbanks7871 Well if Superman would have stopped fighting to save innocent civilians than Zod would probably had taken advantage of Supe's compassion for humans as a way to kill more people while Supes was distracted. His goal was to stop Zod as quick as possible to avoid more fatalities in the long run. If Supes had stopped to save a few lives than Zod could have killed many many more in the mean time.
Also, I don't see why you're saying the fight was bad. It's one of the visually best superhero fights that I have seen anywhere. The fight is also already pretty short. It literally lasts like 10 minutes... It's ridiculous. People complain about this fight being too long while we have fights in movies like Avengers Endgame where the final fight lasted for like a solid 30 minutes. And Inifinity War the final fight was like an hour almost... There is clearly a double standard when it comes to Zack's DCEU movies and the MCU movies.

@@TitanLRV You're writing the script for Snyder and Goyer. There are ways to have Superman save civilians and still win somehow, but it's not my job to say what they are. My point is that I don't know what this Superman stands for. There are conflicting messages and Clark's line "Krypton had its chance" carries no weight. Why does he care enough about humanity to doom his own race to extinction? I don't know. The lack of care for civilians just compounds that issue.
About the final fight length, I'm not the one making comparisons to Avengers movies. But the fight in MoS feels longer because (1) it's almost entirely punching and buildings collapsing, and (2) it has less emotional weight. Again, I don't understand Clark's character and motivations enough in MoS to care whether he wins or loses. The complaint is less about literal runtime and more about the writing.
Since you brought up Infinity War, while the action takes up more runtime than MoS, I'm more invested in the fight and its outcome because the characters are extremely well-developed. I was worried about Tony Stark when Thanos stabbed him. Vision's head being cracked like an egg was a tragedy. I can't honestly say that I'd care if Lois Lane got crushed by one of the (many) falling buildings in MoS.
I get the sense that Snyder wanted to have his cake and eat it too. As in he wanted spectacular fight scenes without emotional investment.
I agree that the movie looks great, but that doesn't make it compelling.
I don't hate MoS. It has some nice details. But the execution falls flat. I actually love Snyder's take on Batman, but he was the wrong person to direct a Superman movie, unfortunately.

The movie needed to spend less time on the Krypton stuff and more time on how the Kents are the reason why Superman is a boy scout. Superman's abilities come from his Kryptonian ancestry, but his values come from being raised by the Kents in Smallville. Instead of teaching Clark to fear and doubt people, Jonathan Kent should have been the reason why Superman has the values he does. I took this terrible portrayal of Jonathan Kent as urban people (the writers of this movie) completely missing the mark on rural people. Kevin Feige would have never let the character be so misrepresented.
I also feel that Mark Waid got it wrong. Superman does not represent hope. Hope is passive. Hope is waiting around for someone to fix things for you or that things will just get better on their own. Superman represents inspiration. Superman does good things, plays be the rules, and never kills because he knows that people look up to him and he inspires other people to do the same.

@@mercutioescalus6782 No. Superman's Boy Scout attitude was a product of the times in which he was rebooted. 1986, Superman became the Big Blue Boyscout, prior to that, you had Bronze Age Superman, who was hella arrogant, Silver Age Superman who was a real dick and Golden Age Superman who was damn near villainous in how he acted. I will elaborate beginning with Golden Age Superman. Superman was found by Mary and Jonathan Kent, soon to be renamed Martha and Jonathan. He was taken to an orphanage and left for several days until Jon and Mary came back to adopt him. He came to Metropolis in 1938 after Ma and Pa had died. He was aggressive, tough, arrogant and cared NOTHING for damage done to criminals or property even when said property had nothing to do with criminal behavior. Superman lost a friend to a car accident so he went around stealing people's cars and sticking them on their garage roofs. He stormed into a radio broadcast while it was on the air, took over and demanded that people stop driving and then he smashed through the wall to leap away. He found a bunch of people living in slums and just burned down the slums so the owner would have to build better homes, with no thought towards where all the now homeless people will stay. He routinely threw criminals several yards through the air towards the paddy wagon with no concern if they broke bones.
Silver Age Superman, Ah, Silver Age, when Superman was made ridiculous thanks to the Comics Code Authority. I will simply refer to Superdickery.com for everything that Silver Age got up to.
Bronze Age Superman was very arrogant, he told Martian Manhunter to hand over a key that Mongul wanted and Martian Manhunter said no so they fought. Supes easily beat MM and MM warned him of what would/could happen if Mongul got the key. Superman blew off MM's concerns with, "I'm Superman." as if that was all that was needed. Supes lost the key and had to eat a little crow, but he was still arrogant about it. Wolverine has his famous line, "That's my job, that's what I do, and I'm the best at what I do." That was Superman's attitude throughout the Bronze Age.
Modern Age Superman, the one rebooted in 1986, was the All American boy, football, baseball, track star with a genius intellect through his school career, using his powers to put himself ahead until he became a senior and finally realized that he was not being fair to the boys that actually worked hard to play. He quit and decided to be a better person. He left school after graduation and traveled the world experiencing different cultures before returning home and moving to Metropolis.
