  • Hello everyone, thank you all so much for stopping by the channel! Big thanks to my patron Wayne for this request. I just watched the Les Mis film for the first time (see my unedited reaction on Patreon!) and I enjoyed it immensely, even with less than perfect vocal performances. So I'm excited to see what Michael and Alfie bring to the roles!

Ball and Boe are so great, Michael Ball is a UK theatre icon and Alfie is a trained opera singer with an incredible voice. I strongly recommend the 2 filmed versions of Les Mis; the 10th anniversary dream cast (including Michael as Marius) and the 25th anniversary with Alfie as Valjean, both stunning shows!

    • @06s091

I would advise against the 25th on the sole reason of Nick Jonas

@@06s091 I really don't think he was as bad as people make him out to be. And certainly not bad enough to discount Alfie and Norm Lewis and Matt Lucas and Sam Barks, not to mention the legend that is Lea Salonga!

@@WhedonianPotterhead Lea is amazing, but I prefer her as Eponine. Norm and Alfie are good, but I prefer the 10th anniversary cast (Alfie has never been a favourite of mine as Valjean because of his acting - he’s gotten better though. I prefer him in the more recent concert recording) and I never cared for Matt Lucas as Thenardier - though to be fair that is more because the Thenardiers have been reduced to comic relief over the years. When in-fact they are the only true villains of the show.

I think Alfie, because of his shyness, held back a bit at first. But he has gained in confidence over the years - Michael's influence I reckon!

Alfie and Michael have been touring together for several years. Michael was the original Marius. Alfie was an automobile mechanics who would sing for his mates while working. A customer heard him, got him an audition with the Royal Opera Academy, and the rest is history. They are great singers but also play off each other and are very close.

The 25th Anniversary show is a MUST to see Alfie Boe in the role & then the Les Misérables: The Staged Concert 2019 with both Alfie Boe & Michael Ball is the best version of Les Mis that I've ever seen.

Michael is our OG Marius, Original West End cast in 1985.
They're both still independent artists touring and performing in their own shows, but they are also close friends, tour together often and do TV specials for Xmas etc.
Alfie is amazing and has a powerful operatic voice, but Michael is the heart and voice behind many West End productions. His name is up there alongside the greatest West End stars of all time.

You’ll never walk alone from Carousel Alfie Boe, Neverland from Finding Neverland Alfie Boe, watch the 5 minute ovation of Alfie in the 25th Anniversary of Les Mis and the end when he changes key it’s phenomenal. Alfie can sing anything from Tosca to spiritual he is an amazing artist. One of my favourites is Nessus Dorma, but Michael and Alfie singing The Prayer is beautiful.

I just came across this clip and wanted to thank you for posting it. I had never seen it before, That said, if you're going to critique something you really should take a few minutes to do your homework. Les Mis has been one of the most popular & most staged musicals around the world since the day it first opened. If you're into theater how could you not know all about it? Go online and watch all the versions- 10th Anniversary concert (considered the dream cast, w. Michael Ball as Marius and Colm Wilkinson as Jean Valjean), the 25th Anniversary concert w. Alfie Boe as Jean Valjean, the Staged Concert w. Alfie again as Jean Valjean and & Michael as Javert. Each version is stunning and brilliantly cast (with one exception in the 25th Ann. concert. You figure out which one.).
Michael Ball is a national treasure in the UK. He is a theater legend and has played everything from musicals to dramas - all beautifully. He is a recording artist and has released an album a year for the past 20 or so years - all successful, and he has a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 2.
Alfie Boe trained as an opera singer and met Michael when they worked together in a production of Kismet. They have since toured together and produced several albums and done several TV specials - especially around Christmas - as well as working together in Les Mis. When they're not touring together they each tour on their own and Alfie has a residency in Las Vegas where he'll be appearing in April.
I know I hit you with a rant, and I'm sorry for that, but these two men are brilliant talents and Les Mis is the gold standard of all musicals. Now that you've had a little taste of the music, go ahead and really find out why the show (and these men) are so loved .

@@suzannerae7124 You're right! They're both fantastic performers - solo and together. I focused on Michael because he has had a more varied career than Alfie & would perhaps be better known outside theater circles.

I'm so glad you did this. I've not seen it before. Les Misérables is my favorite. I first saw Alfie Boe when PBS aired the 25th Anniversary performance from the O2 Arena in London. That's my very favorite version and in that version Alfie was Jean Valjean. If there is anyway you can find a recording of it and watch it, I highly recommend it.

If you want to hear Alfie sing, I’d recommend hearing him sing “Wheels of a Dream,” “Bring Him Home” with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, “Forever Young” from the U.S. Memorial Day concert, “Song to the Siren.” There are countless videos of Alfie’s singing on CZcams. He’s simply magnificent.

I'm a HUGE Michael Ball fan. I have a bunch of his cd's. But I have to say that Alfe outshined (outshone?) Michael in this medley. Les Mis is my 2nd favorite musical of all time, I'm a huge fan. And I personally loved the movie too. I don't understand why it gets so much hate sometimes. I'd rather see the play, of course, though.

Not that I'm biased or anything 😁, but the best Val Jean is the one who sang the original version in English..... Colm Wilkinson (an Irish man). Bring him Home was actually written into the show especially for him when S & B (the French writers) heard Colm's vocal range. It will send shivers down your spine he acts it so well. What's ironic is he really enunciates whilst on stage yet when he speaks he still has his unmistakable Dublin accent!

I prefer Alfie - his singing is stronger, more controlled and consistent. Also, CW is one of those singers who have to 'scream' to get the higher notes.

  • @Sweeney541
    @Sweeney541 Před rokem +1

I realise that I'm incredibly biased when it comes to Les Mis. It has been my favourite show for decades, and I have very strong opinions on performers.
I grew up with the 10th anniversary concert (TAC), and as such that has always been the standard by which I judge any other production of the show. That doesn't mean that all the cast of the TAC are my favourites - not at all.
Anyway.. on to these two performers in particular.
Alfie Boe: he's a classicly trained opera singer - a tenor. So of course his voice would blow you away. His downside - in my opinion - is that he isn't that great an actor (he's gotten beter over the years though) - which is why I prefer people like Colm Wilkenson or John Owen-Jones as Valjean.
Michael Ball: he's pretty much the opposite of Alfie. He's a trained actor, but never had vocal training other than a few random sessions before the himself had to play Valjean at Windsor castle years ago. But despite that he's a phenominal singer and while he can't sing as high as Alfie he sings with a lot more emotion and conviction in my opinion. He is pretty much British theatre royalty as well. He made his West End debut in 1985 as Marius in the orignal cast of Les Mis and has played lead roles in so many shows since: Sweeney Todd, Hairspray, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Chess, Aspects of Love and many many more. He even returned to Les Mis a few years back to play Javert opposite Alfie as Valjean.
Ball and Boe have become a huge double act over the last 5-6 years. they are releasing their 5th albus soon, and all the previous ones have been #1 or 2 on the charts.
