Geddy and Alex were there to pay tribute to Taylor Hawkins, but we all know Danny Carey was there to pay tribute to his hero.
EXACTLY!
I missing very much Neil.
Anyone else feel like this was an audition?
@@stevenkonzen826 if only. I’d love to see it, but i don’t think we’ll get more than a one-off show like this here and there. It’s great to see this and the South Park anniversary show. I hope there’s more. Fingers crossed!
I think they all had fun doing this !!
Danny sitting there looking like he’s living out his childhood dream. I can’t think of a better person to sit on the throne for Rush.
He always does when performing for/with other musical groups.
Agree 👍
Same
Mike Portnoy. It would be amazing to see him playing with Rush.
@@closrod8856 my thought exactly lol
As a drummer myself, it actually helps a lot to see that even the greatest drummers out there have those minor mistakes live when they are not playing their own songs, either because they are a bit nervous or because they did not have enough time to practice with the band, or both.
Nobody's perfect! That makes us human
0:44
At 2:22 there's an almost unperceptible one, he started playing another part on the hit-hat, but very quickly realized and changed to the ride for the correct part the band was playing. And then at 4:01 again when he was going back to the "chorus", but it wasn't time yet. For me it makes the performance that much better, because it shows that even when he makes a mistake his mind is so damn quick to fix it that almost nobody could ever notice (only us fellow drummers/crazy fans who keep close watch to his every move 😅)
@@jonathanbernardestavares Well spotted
Geddy is just a phenomenal bass player!!!
His skills never gets old
Was gonna say, the bass is so juicy here…just awesome.
Agreed! Never enough said about Geddy’s phenomenal bass playing!!
Unfortunately he's lost his voice through the years. Great thing they made so many songs without lyrics because you're right he still plays exceptional
All three of them were virtuosos. Pound for pound, the most talented band of all time
Any living fan of RUSH and TOOL couldn't ask for a better performance. RIP professor.
He messed up a couple times. Either im too perfectionist or he could've learned the song to perfection. He can't even play the Neil peart ride part at it is. 6/10 for me.
He was probably nervous playing with Geddy and Alex at such a big event. Cut him some slack.
Danny is the best/closest representation
He fucked it up big time. Even missed the intro. Joke.
@@DissAeon I believe you are being too hard. Every drummer has their own playing style and even the best can mess up at times. I’m not sure how many times they rehearsed this but it was good enough to pass
Geddy Lee is STILL a MONSTER player!!!!
Right how old is he now? I think in his 70s
One of the best to ever pick up a bass, as far as I'm concerned!
He certainly is. I LOVE his signature Jazz Bass too. What a beautiful instrument! He looks so fucking cool.
Incredible
The best bassist alive
That is a VERY SMALL list of drummers to fill in for such a force as Neil, and still be respected by the fans for doing so.
Perfect choice.
Most drummers would be TERRIFIED to jam with Geddy and Alex. Danny was tepidly concerned.
Danny is LEGEND!!!!!
PERFECT choice.
@@worsethanhitlerpt.2539Underrated comment.
A really good choice
A beautiful tribute. There can never be another Peart. But Carey did HIS OWN honor to our guy. Well done. I’m a 50 year old Rush as well as Tool fan. And I firmly believe that Peart would’ve loved this.
I agree no one could ever be peart. Period!
I love that geddu and Alex hot to play again
@@rocky5152 If you dont think that Danny or about 100 other professional drummers on this earth.....could or couldve played this note for note exactly the way Neil did on the recording? Your're living under a rock.
Yeah with intense study it’s doable. You’ve gotta be up on your chops though, and have studied it RECENTLY. Even the maestro needed to practice it regularly before playing it live.
@@ericpeterson7512 Maybe "Intense study" for someone like you. Yoyoka was nailing John Bonham covers at 8 years old. Not all musicians need to practice as much as other need to.
Danny's nearly non-stop smile throughout the tune, like a kid opening the Christmas present he'd dreamed of for years. Love it!!!
His enthusiasm is infectious! Always puts me in a better mood, gives me hope I guess
Yeah he always laughs and cheeses when he plays drums. Lol. I love it too.
Normal reaction. "Holy cow! It is fucking Geddy Lee and Alex looking at me and smiling."
He ain't mad for sure.
And Geddy and Alex's smiles at the end.
I loved the way Alex smiled at Danny at the end with a nod of approval. I got goosebumps
I love the way he counted flipping DANNY CAREY in at the beginning. Shows you how Neil made it look easy for all of us.
Indeed
Every Drummers dream to play a Rush song with Alex and Geddy and Nail It. Danny did a great job on that song and they all Felt It!!!
That was the highlight of the video IMHO!
Exactly!!
the look on Alex's face at the end, and Geddy's cues to Danny throughout the song, did it for me.
Geddy's bass sounds so fantastic! Great to see them on stage again!
the way geddy plays the bass guitar is out of this world
Absolutely, Keep in mind he's almost 70!
Yeh he's still got it...
The best.
This is solar federation bass stile.
For sure. I always thought he somehow plays it as a rhythm and lead instrument at the same time. If that makes sense
RIP Neil but this must be a dream come true for Danny.
I met Danny before the last Rush show. He was super cool and down to earth, just talked for about 10 minutes before he went in to see the professors last show. really cool to see him up there on the same stage. Must be healing for getting Alex too.
Geddy and Alex! (Spellcheck)
@@latentsea well next time you see Danny tell em we said hi

The way Alex tells him "very NICE" at the end is priceless.
We all can agree that this is a great performance. I'm so glad that they honored Tayor, and it was deserved! No one can play like Neil. No one. Ever. My heart is glad I got to be in awe of Neil in concert many many many many times. (I adore Geddy and Alex just as much...)
Alex making Danny laugh just like he used to with Neil brought a tear to my eye.
You’ve probably seen Dinner with Rush… Neil was in tears thanks to Alex’s goofiness. 😂
Pretty sure geddy never handed neil a dildo during a drum solo tho like maynard did to Danny. 😂😂
Neal Peart and Danny Carey have been 2 of my favourite drummers for years and years, Danny plays so great here with Neal's ex band mates , but I have to say this too that after watching Danny play with rush you start to realise how amazing Neal really was. Enough said .
Yeah, Danny wasn't playing the ride part right at all. Not saying that he couldn't, it wasn't his job to come in and play like Neil
@@JasonDrums24 I know... but he should have not in that case... Danny being a pro drummer. I love his drumming... He should have passed on it in this case.
No one else on the planet could have played it

I agree...he played it like danny carey which is ok by me. You can't try to be Neal. It would be weak
Despite it being a tribute to a musician who just passed away, I can't help but feel so much joy at seeing Geddy & Alex together again. If only Neil were still around.
I agree. But even if Neil was around he’d be done. And I think unfortunately Alex and Gedd would be bitter about it. I think eventually they would’ve gotten over it and Rush would’ve recorded new stuff but not toured.
I was kind of shocked in the strombo interview to find that they were mad at Neil for basically breaking up the band, Alex especially. But I think that since they had been friends for 40 plus years they would e eventually ironed it out.
@@kamb26Neil couldn't do it anymore physically. He didn't owe anyone an apology
Neil would NEVER want Geddy and Alex to never play again.
He was.😢
Geddy and Alex WILL play again someday. Neil wouldn't want it any other way. Stay tuned.
I am so excited to see Danny play King Crimson.
Danny wearing a Raptors jersey while playing with a band from Toronto is a nice touch
Geddy’s playing has aged like fine wine. He gets better as he gets older. Not a lot of musicians, hell, not a lot of us get to defy gravity with a gift we’ve been given as we age. Bravo to all the gents on that stage.
Makes sense for people to get better as they age, just means more experience/practice.
@@sam8404 other than arthritis and other ailments that come with age... that's why they stoppwd touring. Alex has bad arthritis and Neil couldn't keep up with his parts he wrote in their prime.
If R40 is a fair indicator, his singing didn't fare as well.
@@TheMICMusicInspirationChannel most tenors are not as blessed as we baritone singers like to think they are. Meanwhile my grandpa still sings his country tunes in the original range lol bass/baritones will always have this over tenors.
And it's amazing how his hair hasn't gone grey.

It was a treat to watch this. I noticed the timing issue at :44 and it makes you realuze how RUSH worked so hard to petfect everything! Geddy is a monster player and shines here. Thanks for the post.

WOW!!!! That was a true treat to see!!!!! Danny did such a great job, love seeing Alex and Geddy take over that stage with their musicianship!!!! always the best in my book! I miss Neil for sure :(
What a great collaboration. Alex lifeson does not get the credit he deserves. Such an underrated player. His Parts always fit so well and he can be surprisingly technical pretty effortlessly he just doesn't need to show off he's so damn good.
That had to be humbling. Danny is a frigging AMAZING drummer - and there was a moment when Geddy had to head nod him through the transition...I bet there was sooo much pressure, plus I bet Danny was thinking "Ican'tbelieveIgettoplaywithRushIcan'tbelieveIgettoplaywithRush". I know my head would explode. He did well the rest of the tune. YYZ is a TOUGH song also. I can't say that I can do it justice, and I've been playing a LONG time. Seeing Danny Carey playing with Geddy & Alex - that's so cool!
you ok ?
Danny was having to use a smaller drum kit than he or Peart was used to. This was amazing considering he wasn’t using a click and had Geddy to time with.
I caught that little fumble too. He recovered so well though.
@@jgmiller804 right, around 0:45 last part of the intro.
I was like "Danny Carey screwed up (period) a Neil Peart piece (holy crap he was good)"
yeah, I thought caught at least a couple of misses by Danny. He recovered nicely. There's a difference when you're playing it for decades vs. a one-time show. Agree with comments about the kit. It was fun listening to the way he handled the fills too. I was thinking-- How's Danny gonna handle this part when there are no toms for this part? Toronto jersey was an excellent choice. Can we get By-Tor!
That look on Alex's face at the end is priceless!! I really couldn't think of a better acknowledgement of a job well done in Rock than that. Fantastic!! 👏

RIP Professor. I miss you so much. Great rendition¡¡¡
You know Neil is sitting up there in his Komono, approving with a smile. No one will ever replace him but the music should still be shared.
The show, MUST continue. Why not?
Unlikely. He typically had low opinions of other drummers not named Buddy.
Edit:
Which as I think about it, is rather amusing. Peart was a terrible swing/jazz drummer.
@@myprivateyoutube1440 Low opinions? Was this something he did in his books because I've only heard/seen him express admiration in other drummers....from Phil Rudd to Bill Bruford to Rayford Griffin...and of course Buddy too.
@@myprivateyoutube1440 He did? Got an example? Neil often found sanctuary in fellow drummers. Read his books. After Burning for Buddy, Neil realized he needed to change up his form and studied with the great Freddie Gruber and it changed his entire style. He went from a very rigid staccato to a flowing style that helped him age into his drumming so he could do 3 hour shows with less impact on his body. Terrible swing drummer? I'm sure Buddy Rich's family thought the same thing?

Carter Beuaford from DMB could do it. Id love to see that too.
Marko Minnemann? Tim Alexander?
No, there are many. Mike Portnoy being another.
Heart breaking and awesome all at the same time. RIP Professor.
Danny would be the perfect drummer to fill in for Neil if Rush ever went back on tour. Look at the amount of fun theyre having together. Not to mention Danny and Neil were great friends
Omg. What I would do to see that.
They could tour as "Tush".
Yes he almost nailed it, not quite, a small opening error but great performance

No he wouldn’t. Let it lie. I don’t wanna see anyone “fill in” or replace Neil. And neither do Alex or Geddy.
Fan of Rush since the 70's .. went to many of their concerts over the years including the last 40 anniverary concert..great to see Giddy and Alex play together again..good job Danny Carey for covering Neil's licks..Rip Neal Peart, you are missed
How cool is see this amazing song with a new shape, showing us the respect that the musicians, particulary drummers have to the real master of drums.
I can only imagine how surreal this was for all three of them. I have to think that (at some point) Alex and Geddy didn't really imagine themselves playing Rush songs for a live audience again. It looks like all three of them loved it.
👉 Yeah, a few months ago they did an interview with CBS(or ABC, I don't recall which it was), and Geddy said he doesnt know if they'll ever get together again for a Rush tour. But if they just did ^this every once in awhile, that would be good enough IMO.
Even if they just did a handful of annual shows with "guest drummers", where they played Rush songs, plus a few songs from the "guest drummers" bands, that would be ideal. Imagine ^these 3 ALSO doing a few Tool songs! What more could you ask for?

Literally brought me to tears. Doesn't need saying. Saying it anyway. Neil was an incredible drummer and better yet, like his band mates, an incredible human being. Some of his drumming with Tool is otherworldly. Like Neil, he’s not just there to keep time.
