Would you guys believe that I was watching this series back in the eighties in - of all places - Nigeria?!? I was a kid then but I found this and many more British comedies shown on NTA Calabar absolutely hilarious and wouldn't miss an airing - unless it couldnt be helped. Bless their hearts!
Had the pleasure of meeting both Kim Hartman (Helga) and Richard Gibson (Herr Flick) at a convention in Sweden a couple of days ago, and when I was about to pose with them for a photo I presented myself to Kim with "Your highness," and Richard said, in his Flick voice, "She IS quite high." lol They were both really great and wonderful people in real life. Two of the sweetest celebrities I've ever met, and thanks to these two characters they're also tv comedy legends.
@@ba-gg6jo By whom? Why is it always people who are 'anti-woke' that somehow think that people who aren't as sad as them have no sense of humour? Every time has its own style. I can enjoy things made previously without wanting to live in the past.
Could be a viola. As a player, I enjoy spotting how well actors fake playing. I believe Richard was really playing, even with gloves on. The bowing is spot-on and perfect for the tone.
@@londonalicante I'm sure the sound track is over-dubbed. The gloves are a wee bit too much (and clearly a joke). But I'm willing to bet that he does play.
I'd agree Richard can play, those are the correct notes, unlikely it is the original sound as he's wearing gloves, but that doesn't mean it's not him over dubbing himself. However I'd guess it's Nigel Kennedy playing. NK was mega at that time. I'll have to research this.
...most definitely my favorite caracter from the series is Helga ...of course besides Yvette and Maria....they charmed me to watch this masterpiece over and over and over ...again .💘💘💘
I stand corrected, I just looked it up and apparently that theme that Herr Flick plays when Helga strips was actually made in 1962, by someone called David Rose. But yes, it is a well known song for strip teases. Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft must've just used it for comedic effect.
David Rose recorded "The Stripper" in 1958, and it was released in 1962. It hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in July, and was the #5 record of the year. It was also used in an ad campaign for Noxema Shaving Cream in the late 60's. The ads featured this song accompanying shots of a guy shaving, and a Swedish model saying, "Take it off. Take it all off." (meaning the guy's beard). It would have been the series of ads before the ones which featured Joe Namath and an unknown (at the time) Farrah Fawcett as "Creamy."
I watched this as a student in the eighties. It was not shown on Indian TV. My uncle used to get it taped on VHS when he came to India every year. It was binge watching
now have the Americans ever watched this , this is a very well written comedy show and you have to think when about some of the various scenes here and in many many ways quite subtle
imagine gruber screaming like that after seeing helga like this which considering he married her after the war he probably did have a very similar reaction lol
Actually... they married I believe out of convenience / safety. Considering Grubers sexual preference [being Gay or at the very least Bisexual] and Helga is more of a Swinger, having the freedom to pursue any amount of lovers who come her way.
@filmidioten Aw, I'm rather jealous of you. I couldn't be there to meet them, however a friend was kind enough to by me Richard Gibson's autograph. He had apparently waved at her whenever he'd seen her the rest of the day, which I guess says a lot about him as a person :)
This was a bit inconsistent with the storyline. Michelle was the only chick that didn't have the hots for Rene. Was that the short period when she was pretending to love him to keep him from leaving the resistance?
@BenNCM Calm yourself sweetie - I don't really get what your problem is, as my explanation is perfectly good - he has already given (to the girls on his stag night)....hence 'i have already given', seems pretty simple to me. Wy don't you try to explain what your problem is?
When the Beeb entered this for the Montreux TV festival, an outraged director from RTF (French tv) announced that he was going to make a series set in Northen Ireland. Featuring corrupt. Incompetent and gay Britisj officers, IRA men saying " " Sure and oi'll only be saying this once", and called "Begorrah, someone's jyst shot my kneecap off"
It's also what you say to fob someone off when they turn up at your door asking for a donation to charity. Hence, the irony. Of course she is offended but a poor chap can only give so much.😂

NTA!!! 😊
Saw it on tv in the 80's in Trinidad and Tobago. This and Are You Being Served, Benny Hill and Yes, Minister were hits
Every country has its own style of comedy but absolutely no one does comedy like the British.
So many stereotypes and all the better for it.
British comedy is the best.. American sitcoms is forced laughter for me. Without audience laughter it's blehh 🤮

British comedy being great in the past.
@@TheDissidentBrit we had the best tv in the past, now it rubbish.

Nice. Even when out of character. Bless them.
I recently got to see these two as well and your right they are very nice people, even got signed autograph from them too. Still got smile about it.
Lucky
Just found the entire series on Netflix today, best comedy ever.
Von Smallhausen is one of my favourite characters of the series
Richard Gibson played Flik brilliantly.
I thought she was beautiful; she always managed to look so elegant to me.
What a classic. The fiddle playing is beyond compare; watch his face as he acts as well as plays, just brilliant!
And wearing leather gloves. That's REAL talent!
A truly fantastic series. Loved it when it first aired and I still find it just as funny🤣
I had forgotten about this series. I watched and enjoyed it in my youth.
These hilariously entertained audiences bring a lot to the table in this type of comedy.
One of my favorite memories of living in England back in the 80s.
Oh my goodness, the timing on that violin bow gag was utter perfection.
I think it was a Viola. Looked bigger to me
@@highpath4776 Maybe it got bigger as she undressed?
Listen to me very carefully I shall say this only once. Brilliant comedy at its best 😉
Simple silly, innocent yet saucy :) love it
Kim Hartman in naught but stockings, heels and a long coat!! What more could a red-blooded Male ask for? 😍💖
Her phone number!
They just can't make them like this anymore, loved every episode and character.
They are not allowed to.

The "anti-woke" peoples' favourite pasttime is making up people and scenarios so they can get offended and get mad at them.

I assumed he wasn't really playing and that the fact that he was wearing gloves was a rather good additional joke.

I agree. He is, after all, classically trained.
Telephone rings:
Herr Flick answers;
"Flick, the Gestapo (beat) No, I said FLICK, the Gestapo!!"
Bilingual bonus…
It’s close enough for our ears to sound like the f-word
But in German, the work Fick IS the f-word! 😂
Brilliant! Great show. 👍👏👏👏👏👏👏
loved this programme, genius
Oh, no rush. Tomorrow vill do.
what i would have given to be standing where Herr Flick was standing in this scene

Gruber would sure be happy to see Rene so indifferent after seeing Helga :D
Crabtree and Von Smallhausen are the two funniest characters.
Another fine show that would not last today. A perfect cast on every part & expertly written. This show is a real HOOT.

I love how he plays the Stripper theme on his Violin lol. Then I love his reaction when she strips.
Richard Gibson plays the violin in real life. I read that he incorporated more violin playing into his live appearances as Herr Flick.
Those shoulders are exquisite.
I miss this show so much
THE BEST ENGLISH COMEDY EVER !!!
Great violin playing - and in gloves too!
Super Awesome
wonderful series funny

Funniest bit of the series in my opinion
Naughty helga ruuulllzzzz
it's my favorite part. XD

@bournestwin
Might be. I think it's not supposed to be clear what he means. It's open for every possible interpretation.
I've never even seen this scene, how has that happened??? HILARIOUS
Herr Flick of the Gestapo
old school british sitcom
What a hilarious story
Actually i noticed it sounded like "You Can Leave Your Hat On" when Helga undressed and Herr Flick played the violin.
Thanks

Her Doctoooooor!
The Germans must laugh when they see how foreigners portray them , with that stiff abrupt precise way of communicating and socialising .
He's playing "The Stripper".
i'm already given lol
What about the dead cod scene?
What was the first piece of music played?
kinda sounds like The Happy Wanderer
Was 'The Happy Wanderer' (violin) written by WW2?
1:33 😳😳😂😂🤣🤣😂🤣😂😂
OH, her flick! you almost cut the violin in two!
Poor Helga. She was smart and competent but they only wanted her for her body.
I’d be happy with it too !

Which episode the last scene?
@Darkstar263 never heared that was a stripper theme before!
I wondered what was so funny allready...
his scream is hilarious XD
My god three swastikas XD

Only Ze Fuhrer can get 4 swastikas 😅

Shows how focused Michelle was. But I think secretly she probably was.
She did it for France.
