  • #thinklikeahorse #ItIsNeverTheHorsesFault Good footage for a mare with a new born defending her colt and doing a damn fine job of it. The colt and mom were fine and in the original video they show them together two days after this incident.

    I saw this on Facebook. It really is great footage. But you will not BELIEVE the amount of comments berating the cameraman for not helping the baby. Jesus people, these are WILD animals and these horses are being horses. Baby is probably learning lessons on how to keep himself safe and stay alive. Good god some people are stupid.

      I'm beginning to think that it's a question of maturity. When I was under ten yrs I thought wildlife photographers should protect the prey. Perhaps it just our immaturity coupled with burgeoning compassion that leads to uneducated reactions.

      +rubymimosa Aye, well a lot of the people commenting had an adult in their profile pictures so in not sure about the 10 year old thing. But I get your other point. As much as I wish the guy _could_ help the goal, I completely understand it is just the horses' nature. It's amazing to watch and very educational for us dummies in the horse world.

      lol, nature does a pretty good job without humans fucking it up at every opportunity. As for the cameraman/woman, challenging a group of studs trying to be dominant or the protective mother who has no idea what your intentions are; That would be a dumb way to die.

      99 percent of those people are probably inexperienced around horses. Those of us who know realize the plain foolishness of trying to intercede with wild mustangs, especially when it comes to a stud who "wants some."

      +Kitty Buttcheeks Clone "better than the gazelles in Africa" Most Gazelles carry for only 5-6 months and many give birth twice a year while horses carry for 11 months. This may play a role in the much stronger defence mother instinct in horses compared to gazelles. Also, in this video the mare isn't defending against predators, but other horses. Although I doubt she would have acted differently if the intrudors would have been wolves.

      What's most dangerous thing that faces American 🏇? And take to the account of the danger of living in African Savannah where predators are constantly eating those poor gazels. It's defense mechanism is to run in packs alone she can't defend her cub.
      Or she too will be a meal. Like the person before told you her reproductive cycle is twice of that horse. It's make sense to not feel attached to her young because she can reproduce in short period.

      I agree! This footage was amazing. I kept getting very, very nervous for the foal but mama just did a beautiful job pivoting around her foal and protecting him (I have no idea whether the foal is a colt or a filly). And it looks like things settled down when the other mamas returned. I love hearing Rick's narration vs. obnoxious comments on Facebook about how the camera guy should have saved the baby, etc.. Wild horses need to learn to protect themselves.

    You'd be surprised what a fight that mare will put on... For her baby. Yes the Stallions are ultimately stronger and their tag teaming her. But the hooves will hit the fan before they touch that foal... Even though a 100% agree with Rick here, they weren't after the baby! Just to prove their dominance to all, other studs, and momma... This is awesome to watch first hand and yes you want to run in and help! But let me tell you? That foal under 24hrs old! Stands a better chance then any man (without the right equipment) anyhow...Mares have kept their babies alive for ForEver*.... Some ninnies separating them for decades can't stop natural instinct! And yes...I'm a ♀! Lol and I flipping hate Pink! Unless I'm really tan? And it's a good fitting tank top hehe

      +MoonMoonFang Large non-domesticated cats will yes, kill the offspring of others, but its mostly only present in Lion prides. I wanted to point out that Domestic cats are actually highly social and will care for and play with the offspring of others much like horses. Geldings and foals = male cats in a pride and kittens. Its pretty cool to see a domestic cat pride functioning :D

    • @TravelersGarden_dgdr
      @TravelersGarden_dgdr Před 8 lety +5

      +Tiro Wolfe Yep, domesticated cats rarely would harm kittens. They often even take care of them and become their "uncle".

    • @Seleuce
      @Seleuce Před 7 lety +19

      +Atrax Robustus Wild horse stallions actually do kill new born foals from time to time, mostly when they already took a herd over from the previous dominant stallion. There would be no need for horse mares to evolve such strong defence against strange stallions if they wouldn't mean potential danger. Stallions do so because some mares with newborn foals stay loyal to the last stallion for quite some time, refusing the new stallion while the new stallion wants to mate. They usually get into heat and obey once they lost the foal.

      "domesticated" feral or wild tomcats will also kill kittens. Happened here a few years ago, I'm almost certain. New tomcat moved into my area and within a couple weeks of seeing him, all three of my female cats litters were gone.

    What I thought was interesting. So the first stud that came into the picture was put in his place by the mare and accepted it. Now the dark one is coming in and what's very interesting is that I believe that first stallion now took on the role of protecting the mare and baby from the other stallion. Like even tho he couldn't move the mare, he claimed her already and now took over the role of the herd stallion. Which means now he's protecting his herd from other stallions. And that's what he's doing for the rest of the video. Granted he got one more kick by mamma but if you watch closely you can tell that he's claimed them now.

    • @susangardiner2087
      @susangardiner2087 Před 8 lety

      +Allyson Marie Mares often separate themselves when they go off to give birth. They do prefer privacy. In this situation the mare was disturbed by another herd. Separating the mare does give her that privacy feeling. It is usually the stallion that is taken away from the herd in domestic herds raised by humans.

    • @susangardiner2087
      @susangardiner2087 Před 8 lety +2

      +fokir sre How well the your mare does is how much she had learned or relearned herd behavior. What status she holds in the herd. But after she is established and such, if she had a foal, that foal would be okay. It would probably benefit greatly being in the herd then being separated from the herd. The mare will set boundaries for the others regarding her foal. The foal will learn how to be a horse. And will have friends to play with. Gives mom a break.

    I laughed too about what that baby must be thinking.

    My moms horse used to have a best friend who was a younger horse (My moms horse was really old and retired) and when the younger horses would get rough and try to knock about my moms horse the best friend horse would guard my moms old horse. Also when my moms horse died his best friend wouldn’t eat or move for days because he was grieving and they had to get the vet in. The people in the farm said they’d never heard of anything like it before.

    • @freebird9224

      +FreeBird I've watched this several times now and Mama's footwork and gentle treatment of her baby alternating with vicious attacks on the studs is amazing to me. That instinctual drive that alllows her to "switch hats" from second to second is what causes me to simply revere the horse. My God...
      Also amazing to me is the way the mares rush in and circle around Mama and her baby. I watched another video recently of a mustang mare giving birth in the wild and she also was surrounded by her female herd mates, standing guard in order for her to focus on the job at hand. Don't know that even humans have similar concern for one another.
      As usual, your commentary adds so much Rick. Just one of some great one-liners: "only been alive a little bit and all hell is breaking loose" caused me to blow coffee through my nose!
