I like how his first instinct was to take a hatchet to the wall rather than move the milling machine.
I feel that this shows he did not realise all use cases when the machine was placed, therefore knows that he needs to rethink the location of walls, because the location of machines for most processes is already optimal….

I almost got angry when he didn't stick to his silly solution, not sticking to that idea by taking a chainsaw to the wall, instead chosing to move the milling machine.
I had the same thought. I was expecting him to take more wall, but at some point it compromises the integrity of that wall
Maybe bolted to the floor?
The fact Alec’s first idea was to chop a notch in the wall versus move the machine proves he is a “get the job done no matter what” type dude.
That's certainly one way of looking at it!
For large items a counterweight might provide the solution. Heavy springs are quite dangerous to be around if they break or come off.

I'd imagine suspending a counterweight so high wouldn't be particularly safe. Someone else suggested using gas struts, that could be a better solution.
The counterweight can be low down and all that's needed would be a pulling link. Much more stable and less likely to topple over.
Ask anyone who's ever replaced coil springs on a vehicle.
some sort of gas cylinder strut is probably the order of the day here, to avoid the gravity potentional of a counterweight system
Maybe try safety garage door springs - the ones with a rod or cable down the center. That way if the springs explode the shrapnel is mostly captive.
The spring conundrum looks terrifying, could there be a way to make gas struts work perhaps?

@@lukeb3930 That's why I mentioned gas struts, it's basically like a compression spring (as opposed to a tension spring), so it would have to be placed differently but otherwise work similarly enough without the whole, y'know, being a terrifying big honking spring thing.
Hydraulics could be used if you wanted a remotely controlled lamp movement, but I'm unsure if you'd be able to make a hand moveable lamp that way without a full hydraulic system complete with pistons, pumps, and lines, etc.
Hydraulic fluid doesn't really compress, that's sort of the whole point of it and why it can support huge machinery like excavators.
(Disclaimer: I do not have an engineering degree, I just read too much. 😄)

The word 'clamp' tends to be used in engineering while 'cramp' tends to be used in woodworking, although to a large extent, the two terms are interchangeable.
A clamp is used to hold work, which has been jointed in place whilst the glue sets, whereas a cramp not only holds the joint but also allows pressure to be applied.
I've never heard of cramp used like that. Only ever as a muscle cramp.

Garage door springs might do it. It would be super sketchy though. Kind of goes with the theme.
Garage door springs would be the safest of all springs. Most of them have a center core that is meant to catch them if anything happens to them.

When I was in training as a bench joiner, I was told that a "clamp" holds things still, much like a wheel clamp. A "cramp" squeezes things, much like a muscle cramp.
By this definition, you were using cramps. In fact, as a bench joiner, I can tell you they were "sash cramps." 😁👍
I find it really interesting to see Alec doing a mostly fabrication project apposed to a blacksmithing project and how his blacksmithing skills change his approach for a fabrication project. it is very cool can wait to see more and love the content that you guys make its always interesting and I'm constantly learning new things despite on being involved in your trade.

The signature Alec Steele way.
The "normal size" lamp is meant to be articulated by moving the lamp itself, not by manipulating the support structure. You might need to get creative with a scaffold or some kind of personnel lift, or maybe some guy lines attached to the lamp head so it could be moved from ground level.
The strength of the springs is also carefully calibrated to support the mass of the lamp on the end of that lever, so you might have some fine-tuning to do in that regard.
Hey Alec, life changing shop tip - Get shop pants with knee pad inserts! Since you have your own line of pants you may be able to integrate these as a feature. i have them in my duluth pants and I will never go back!

you could use a boat wench at the base of the lamp and the cable attached to the lamp in conjunction with your springs. just reel the cable in to lift the lamp if it is to heavy.

The phenomenon of a brand name becoming the generally used name for a product is called "genericization". Common examples are "kleenex" for tissues, "xerox" for copy machines, "channel lock" pliers.

This will be a great series. I'd definitely use thinner wall material. Not sure whats commercially available but if the lamp is scaled x8 you want a wall thickness x8 thay of the original. Either that or use aluminium. Way too much weight with the steel. The pivoting base part is okay but everything above needs to be lighter. Only way i can see this working is if you change the length of the levers or replace the springs with hydraulics. Nothing that a bit of ingenuity and money can't solve. Best of luck.

@@DominusFeles I do believe it might have something to do with the welding properties of aluminum. It's been a hot minute since I was last in shop class but if I remember correctly it's either that you can't weld it or it's not easy.
@@TheLastYnzy You can most definitely weld aluminium, it takes a bit more skill than steel though 😊
@@DominusFelesI believe money is the answer. Aluminium is quite a bit more expensive than steel. Seeing as this is a prototype and it might not even work in the end, it would be silly to spend the extra money. Besides, steel is easier to repurpose, when he doesn't want the lamp anymore.

Idk but in my opinion and what I would recommend you do has to do with your compressed air lines! Do they have a water catch to drain water? If not you should put a valve below your air connections so you can drain the water and that way the water is below ur hose connection so water doesn’t get into your air tools/equipment like plasma cutter, arc gouging, impact, needle scaler, etc. just trying to help yah out there Alex! My dad is a mechanic and I’m a welder and I work at his shop with him and that’s how we got ours setup!

I just got my first forge done, a wooden box filled with dirt and bricks. Working on turning a piece of railroad steel into an anvil, and overall excited to get into the hobby
While moving heavy equipment around the shop is not easy, it's still the better choice. Especially when option two is to chop a hole in the wall!
Alec you should try looking at springs used in garage doors !
older style bowling pinsetter sweep springs! seriously, would be perfect. was a bowling machine mechanic back when...those were a MONSTER to replace. look some up and see if they'd help 😁

with springs possibly being an issue, crazy idea, but some sort of spring from the shock of an atv or car might be able to work as a spring, if you could hook a weight scale near where the springs will opperate, and do like you did at around 11:45 you could hook the scale up, secure the lamp arm, and somehow pull the scale straight down, you could see the amount of spring force needed in order to lift the outer lamp arm. then you know the minimum you need, and hey, maybe a few springs from an atv shock or small car might work

Omg it is not a pixar lamp :D Brands becoming a genre is interesting though, Sellotape or scotch tape. Adhesive bandages, plasters, or band-aids. Large trash receptacle or dumpster. Escalator and even kerosene are brands that have better defined a product than the mouth full of words we had before.

Seeing Eye is a specific training location), Xerox (photocopying), Styrofoam (expanded polystyrene), Plexiglas (acrylic glass), PowerPoint (it's not a powerpoint presentation unless you're using PowerPoint), and of course, everyone's favourite: Google (search engine).
Some fun extras that don't really have generic names: Bubble wrap, GED, Ouija Board, Weed Eater, Scotch Tape, Popsicle, Onesie (the baby clothing)

Prehaps if you were to fill the tube with lead shot it might work well as a counterweight, or even better yet replace the springs with hydrologic rams, but then you’d have to root around getting it plumbed up and having a hydrologic pump

For springs, force gage between arm and base. Use straps or chain and check force. Easy.
Otherwise could use pneumatic actuators as air spring. Not quite as easy as length and force for steel springs.

You need a garage door springs if they can hold a garage door up that should be quite easy.
That lamp is gonna need a 600w-1000w HPS/MH light. 🤔 Would be avesome and that bulb isnt that far from those propositions you're making 👍
When you scale it 8x by dimension, you are scaling it 8x8x8 times by mass. It means 512 times the weight if also material thickness is in scale. You need spings, which are 64 times stronger than originals, assuming you have also scaled up attach points.

Since that is a Bridgeport, the ram can move the head in and out quiet a few centimeters. Use a stack of 123 blocks to move the part away from the solid vise jaw. Save the Sheetrock. 😉
Please Alec, give some thought over what kind of bulb you might want to use for the look, as a single bulb normally comes with a weight ballast of at least 3kg, like a brick in size.

Hey Alec, I have a video idea that I think would be really cool, as a beginner knife maker I was trying to think of cool knife designs and found that AI art generators can make some really cool but challenging design ideas. I think it would be a really fun challenge for you to try and make a knife of dagger from an AI art generation.
You can bend tubing pretty easily by cutting notches into the tubing, bending, and then welding or tacking the metal into place. It seems like a lot of work but I’ve never had any kind of rollers and this worked wonders for me
That's one way, but also consider that maybe you don't really need to bend it and it's possible to make a workaround. The design might be slightly different from the original, but straight tubing is often stronger.
