How Armor Was Polished in 14th Century England: POWER TOOLS
I love blued armour ❤. Amazing how many pieces in the Royal Armouries still have some traces of bluing around river holes and edges. The Medieval world was a lot more colourful than we tend to think it was
I read somewhere that at some point during the late 18th and early 19th century, a lot of stored historical armor was re-polished to a finer polish and often removing the remnant of the original blued effects as they were sold off to collectors.
@@gawkthimm6030 Yes, sadly. Early 20th-century collectors and their knight-in-shining armor romanticism destroyed a lot of original patinas and finishes. The Bashford-Dean Frankenarmors in the Met Museum are prime examples.
I think in movies they don't like shiny as much because it is harder to remove reflections (like with c3p0)
Same. Bluing is such a cool process, especially when you look at how it ages. I love looking at old Winchester rifles where the blued barrels turned to a brown and the case hardened receivers turned gray. Makes you think about what armor looked like out of the shop 500 years ago.
Helped to identify the commander. Just look for a wild berry Poptart.
The blueing is absolutely gorgeous!
I agree with you completely
purpling
That 14th century belt grinder and blow torch were crazy!
he explains how it was done in the 14th century...
It's so cool seeing alec explore other metal working things he always looks so excited
And who can blame him!
would be great to see a whole suit of armour maybe
He's so good at being new to stuff. That was one of the best parts of his early videos
You learn something new every day, I had no idea they had electric motors for polishing armor in the 14th century!
Right? At one point they say that historically leather straps with grit or paste were used. But it's not the focus of the video or done on screen
They did have water wheels (similiar to a saw or grain mill), so I suspect that may have made things a little easier ;)
Imagine a whole army suited up with works of art like this... Absolutely incredible, the effort we go to to kill each other
I miss your viking sword you made and sold to be able to move. I think about that sucker often. I enjoyed that journey of its making
Great video!! Now you need the full suit of armor!! That would make a great series and to showcase those hard working armorers and what it takes to make a full suit of armor😀😀😀
When Alec is wearing all the layers with the armor, he looks jacked! That must have been so labor intensive before power tools.
6:35 I was terrified to see Alec's hand inside the belt while he was close to the power switch, an accident can happen so quickly, please stay safe and secure! ❤
also should not be wearing gloves around any spinning machinery.
Wow! I had no idea that 14th Century Blacksmiths had access to blowtorches and electric motors! That's amazing! /s
Alec, I appreciate how you are spending your time boosting other in your craft. Very admirable! Not just are we learning who makes the steel, but the craftspeoples that use it is great!
I worked for an armoury crafter some time ago and if you’re into medieval armoury you should go and try to build a brigandine. There are lots of beautiful models and the way they work is just awesome. By the way, the Tewkesbury Abby has a wooden door that is covered in brigandine plates, that were shot through by arrows. And if I remember correctly these plates were horse armoury only.
That turned out beautifully. It’s so cool to see people finding success as creators. Love it
Awesome job. Always thought armor was awkward and bulky but to hear you talk it’s more comfortable than that. Alec thanks for doing that. Never saw it done before! 👍👍👍
Jamie, you're a rock star.
Don't think your Dune-inspired music went unnoticed. We noticed.
The blueing is so cool, it made it look like some kind of enchanted platebody that you would find in a video game. Really neat.
I think above all else, the humility and respect for another's craft is what makes this video so incredible. Learning what others are capable of is nothing short of amazing, especially when you can show the proper respect for it. Bravo.
We need a series of Alec making his own set of full plate armor!!
Yes! Where is it already?!
NIce rack with that armour Alec. I really like how efficient that rack is. All those different anvils just in their place to be used by anyone who need any of them in the workshop.
Amazing video, it was incredible to see the difference in an armourers workshop compared to a Blacksmith 👌
Armplour making is really a intresting craft, greay for you to show that tona woder audience.
Good workshop! As an armorer, I was very interested!
Love this series. Awesome video guys.
Must be a great job making these.
Ah! red dykem stain - your favorite color. Very nice piece of metalwork. Stay safe.
So very cool to see the process and skills used.
And as others have mentioned, that blueing color with the candy red/purple/blue colors! 😍
The bluing is a work of art!
At first I thought shine as possible so the sun blinds your opponents. Then you blued it and WOW. That's gorgeous. I also thought they'd do some tooling to the leather before dyeing it. Adds a touch of class. Still beautiful. Nice work L.A. and Alec.
I still love your content. You're never boring. Love to watch what you'll come up with next.
Great choice on placement of the armours Mark. It shows who made it clearly, your pride in the piece and where it came from but it also has the added bonus effect of looking like a simple bit of decoration almost like a coat of arms. It's mad to think about how much quicker it is imagine having to do that with hand held stones etc....
Let's get the elephant out of the room
What ya do to your finger? 😂
Tis but a scratch.
This was cool to watch. I'd love to see the other joining armor pieces get created and finished too!
strange how the title implies the video will be showing polishing methods used in the 14th century, but all the polishing shown in the video was done with modern-day equipment and techniques . . . despite the misleading title, it's *_STILL_* a damn cool video
Thanks for a very informative video. Wishing you a speedy recovery also. Hand and finger injuries are aweful.
You should make a full set of blue armour!
Alec it's coming along nicely so far my friend. Can't wait to see more videos soon my friend. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Forge On. Fab On. Weld On. Keep Forge lit. Keep Making. God bless.
Well worth the wait on this one, absolutely incredible skills showcased and the final product is simply gorgeous!
the hot blueing was SO COOL.
About time Alec learned how to make armor. He's already made an entire fucking arsenal of swords and -smithing- hammers.
I think this was one of your best videos. Great seeing you guys together
If this is something you enjoy, seeing you take your maximal effort approach to a gold inlayed gem studded Damascus armor set would be incredible. It would probably be like a 900 episode series, but I’d be here for every one.
I love these types of videos. It would be cool to see you try to recreate an Opinel folding knife in Damascus, and then maybe take a trip to France to tour the factory, don’t know if they’d be into that but worth an ask.
My arms would have fallen off and melted if I even attempted this. Great Work Alec!!
I never thought about putting cling wrap on my workbench to handle spills. Nice 👍
I didn't think the blueing would be anywhere near as bright as it came out looking. It looks awesome.
That bluing took that plate up 5 levels
The finished piece looks magnificent.
Oh yeah!!! Thanks Alec!!!
He's got a point! I've worn chain and it's comfy like a weighted blanket.
I'll admit getting up from sitting was rough but... :P
I had the opportunity a few days ago to finally wear some chain, I was so surprised by how comfy it was. I really just didn't want to take it off lol
ALEC DOES ARMOUR.
I’m so happy.
That looks amazing! And so wholesome that you asked him to put the stamp front and centre
that looks SO COOL
Brilliant to see this kind of work being showcased. If you're ever in Australia, look up a live-action roleplay group called Stormglow Battlegame. We do medieval/fantasy battle and your armour would look incredible on the field! 🛡
Worth watching just for that moustache!
Such a lovely craft.
Now that was just bloody great to watch... Cheers Dudes! TFS, GB :)
Yeeea, armor time. It's so shiny.😮
Love your videos and work Alec been watching you since the original UK days! With all you know now,
If you could go back in time to be a blacksmith: when would you go?
What would be your top 3 things to make using the methods of the period to make you the best stand out blacksmith of the time?
Absolutely love the color.
I would love to see you make something for LA in return!
This is so awesome, love the colors, thats my favorite part.
I love, it was brilliant video Alec! ❤
Jamie asking are you going to take off that chainmail. Lol! I get Alec's reply. As a former extra on film sets I had to wear chainmail and armour for months at a time. It became very comfortable. In the off season between filming stints I would add weights to my arms and legs and carry a knapsack with maybe 12 or 14 kilos of weight in it and walk my dog for several miles or maybe a bit further just to feel like I was getting enough exercise to equal what i had done before. That was a few years ago and I don't do as much now, neither does my dog now that he's older. I miss that level of fitness. My wife tells me that I was born about 1000 years too late for my attitude. I'm not sure about that because I would miss video games and TV shows, but deep down I know for sure that chainmail and a swordbelt on my hip makes me walk a little taller and feel better even if I was never a warrior.
looks great! well done
NICE finger to injure! THAT red bandage would REALLY emphasise the gesture nicely! Hahahaha But seriously, hope it gets better soon fella! 👍
😎🇬🇧
That looks awesome
This jsut renenwed my desire to see Alec revisit and reattempt his hand-tools only knife challege to see how his skills have changed.
That blueing is gorgeous!
Look at him in his little puffer jacket in July! Poor soft southern lad can't hack it up north!
2:25 the sandpaper should've definitely been incorporated into the ALEC STEELE build
I’d love to see them come back every so often and do another piece of the armor till they make a full suite
I do this same type of work but with cars if you want to mess around at home without a forge 1mm cold rolled works well and can be worked cold into armour you just have to do more stretching and upsetting and more planishing and less sanding great for cosplay
Simply awesome. now I really wish to see Alec in a full suit of that gorgeous armour. Sir Alexander of Steele
That is unbelievable! Your one lucky fellow!
Absolutely beautiful
Leeds Armoury is a great place for a visit. Nice work 2x👍
Please please please! DO THE FULL ARMOUR!
Can you even imagine the work and time required?
Like his new hair, nice mohawk
What a great project and group of craftsmen. Alex, please help them with their website, it sucks!!!!
Hot blueing colors are one of my favourite thing ✨🥹, but in my experience a lot of beautiful colours go away after putting oil on top of the blueing. So it got me wondering what is that liquid that you putting on there after blueing?
Wishing best for all of you from Estonia
Looks great! 😁👍
Good idea for when the misses gets upset with you 😢😂
Alec you should sit down and make a full set of armor and show everything including the mistakes you make while learning and explaining the time you spend on each piece. you have experience with forging so i would expect you could figure it out faster or be more efficient with your hammer work but the knowing that even good blacksmiths always have more to learn is something i've noticed as a theme in your channel showing that even years of experience doesn't make you perfect I personally think it would be an amazing series probably a long one though so you never know.
Wow! Awesome!
Alec, go to Hastings with them. I did Hastings twice, in 2001 and 2006 was really great.
Beautifull work, great craftmanship, thanks for sharing!
I want to see you in full plateaus you'd have love making the boots and gloves
Hey Alec, I'd like to touch back on casting obsidian. Going over all videos and the issues with what seems like cracking while cooling. What if we were to delve deeper into what the "natural environment" of obsidian is in when it cools and DOESN'T crack.
FACTORS: what gasses are around the obsidian as it forms and or cools?
What other minerals and what amount are present during the creation and cooling process naturally?
Could we allow it to cool or cast in a similar environment vs a modernized approached?
An idea: maybe cool it naturally via surrounding with similar environment or maybe through a vacuum chamber to eliminate air bubbles or trapped gasses?
I think if anyone can figure out the mystery it would be you! Love the channel and the content, long time subscriber. Keep it coming!
Ps love the armor!
So are we going to see Alec Make a sword after this to go with the armor? Series about a sword (let's be very clear, I actually like having a super long series to a project. Like I love the katana series, and the spyhander, those are some of the reasons I watch Alec still to this day!)
*FANTASTIC*
“Whipper snapper”-there’s a thought. The world’s most expensive whip with Damascus steel handle with inlaid jewels.
Yesssss fresh steel. Only 21 minutes old 😂
alec is right, chain shirt is like a weighted blanket for hugs
Interesting is it possible to planish all the bumps out by cold forging. My first Brest plate looked like it had gone through a hail storm backwards. I was using 16 gauge steel or 1.6mm cold roll
What have you done to your finger Alec?
Excellent!!
You should try leather working again, it would be great to see some more custom sheaths like you did with the bowie knife.
Awesome!
That is a beautiful chest armor!
