Need another project? Hydroforming....
Honestly, if you're bending sheet metal that big and are running into issues, you might want to give @colinfurze a bell.
14:14 the answer is neither and both
@colinfurze
LOL you have built a Darlek!
I would love to see a colin furze and alec steele collab. He's really good at this fabricating malarkey.
Second this suggestion
Yeah... but Colin would make the entire lamp in 2 episodes and Alec couldn't drag his usual 10 episodes out of it... I miss the old Alec steele very much.
@@billabong9215but would you rather have 2 40 min episods every few months, or 8 15min videos every week or so
old alec had like 40episode workpieces.@@billabong9215
Yes!!!❤
You have a floor. You have string. You have chalk. Draw circles on the floor of the diameter you want. Place objects on drawn circles to test for circularity.
Euclid, is that you?!
bingo.
This makes too much sense.
@@69Buddha No, but I learned a lot from him…
Alec is actually just trying to catch the worlds biggest moth...
catching mothman
MothMan
Mothra!
Wę müst gø tø thę førbįdën lämp.
L A M P
Give Colin Furrs a ring, he is great at this sort of stuff
That's a great point. They should use that water forming technique Colin uses to get a bulbous shape.
Should've really asked Colin to give you a hand on this one; bending curves in sheet metal is one of his specialties
Hydroforming time !!! 😀
I love the banter!! ‘’These ain’t Saturday night beads Jamie’’ 😂😂
Now that the hard cuts have stopped confusing me, I've decided I like them
It's like watching a Rob Dahm video
As a sheet metal worker…welcome to my daily problems 😂😂
The most frustrating job I've ever had! I swear it purposely doesn't cooperate.😂
@@gibbnasta it can be such a pain i served my time for 4 years then another 4 years on the job and I still encounter new problems!
I had a thought about the springs at the weekend while out clay pigeon shooting, the main springs from clay pigeon traps are very strong and easily available might be worth a try, also colin furze is the man to call to help you make this sort of stuff he’s great with cones and and rings in sheet steel !
Colon Furze haha
Not to mention, the giant work barn he got specifically for huge projects like this one.
8:09 Alec discovered someone can actually be good at doing something. 😂
Alec: we don't need a slip roller.
Also Alec: this is more teardrop shaped then round.
The nice part is he shows how to do the cones even if you don't have the slip roller.
"Saturday Night Beads" , I could do with a whole book of Alec's polite euphemisms 😂
Part of the reason that "cone" (which is actually meant to be a dish shape) is so hard to make that way is that the original one is spun on a lathe.
It's a really tricky thing to learn at a normal scale (Ive never got it right) and I have no idea where you'd find the kit to do it at that scale lol
That's the same way they make cymbals for drums!
I feel spot welding may have been the more ideal choice for such thin steel. But you did a great job Tig.
It fun to watch a blacksmith to figure out what sheet metal workers do on a daily specially, HVAC guys
It's hard to tell if this is a lamp shade or a Dalek costume.
He’s going to exterminate those circles if they take any longer 😂😂
So I'm not the only one who saw Dalek then.. I feel better now.
I don’t know if Alec is just incompetent or if Colin Furze is just an absolute fabrication monster, but I feel like Colin would’ve knocked this project out in a weekend… lol
He’s made perfect sheet metal balls, cones, spirals, drill tank treads, and so much more and makes it look pretty easy!
Maybe it’s planning.. or tools? Idk… I think Colin just makes it look so easy that I assume it actually isn’t that hard and it probably is. So I’m going to say that this just makes me respect Colin even more.
He just needed a slip roller for the metal sheets. Trying to get an even circle without one is nearly impossible.
Colin's done a lot of curvy-shapes-out-of-sheets for all his pulsejets etc, whereas I'm pretty sure Colin's never smithed. They're about 100-200 years apart in terms of their comfort zone.
You need a dome shape for that larger portion of the lamp shade- I'd suggest looking at how cosplayers make similar shapes with foam sheet and copying that, rather than making a cone shape. Will be much more true to the original lamp shade and probably much easier too...
Or he could just look at the breastplate he made with Lancaster Armoury a couple of months ago. I'm very confused as to why he didn't try heating and beating.
@@robertharris1748 I think size is the issue- that's a huge piece or pieces of metal to heat and beat into shape, way more effort than it's worth for what is essentially a gag project.
If you used water forming, the roundness problem would be solved, but you would still need to make all 3 parts to weld together and you would also need to close both sides prior to water forming.
No this is pretty basic sheet metal fab stuff, imagine if nobody could make accurate cones and cylinders on a slip roll lmao
Really hoping you use a MASSIVE bulb, seen and replaced a few of those when I was an electrician and they are crazy looking haha
Easier way to fold edge is to snip one edge then fold it over other edge, same method is used to make a tuba bell & several other brass instruments.
Trace the lampshade on the floor, use the rope and chalk to make a true radius to stretch to and make the wire that size.
Alec is a mad blacksmith and I love it.
How have neither of them thought to just draw a circle on the floor?!?!
This is my favorite build you guys have done in a long time. Maybe since will left. You and Jamie are great together!
This series is too entertaining
13:19 Alec really portrays the love and enthusiasm of a kindergarten teacher that's had too long a day
Your videos always inspire; thank you!
Your mate with the cars is an absolute legend!!!
I need a dog like Alec's lol any dog that will bring you tools is a perfect dog
The hexagonal lamp shade at the end, nervously looking around during "spot the imposter circle" lol what a cliff hanger.
What you need is an english wheel? Or a stretching and shrinking machine!
Don't use that method to remove rust from metal, because it warps that kind of a thin sheet. Use the eyepoker3000, brass preferably, with a light touch. You're only making more work for yourself whenever you warp things you want to weld, especially thin things.
After watching for years it’s becoming more and more clear that Jamie is the brains of the operation here
I think I found the part where you guys went wrong.
The lineup consisted simply of six hydrocoptic marzelvanes, so fitted to the ambifacient lunar waneshaft that sidefumbling was effectively prevented. The main winding was of the normal lotus o-deltoid type placed in panendermic semiboloid slots of the stator, every seventh conductor being connected by a non-reversible tremie pipe to the differential girdlespring on the ‘up’ end of the grammeters. Moreover, whenever fluorescence score motion is required, it may also be employed in conjunction with a drawn reciprocation dingle arm to reduce sinusoidal depleneration.
Give that a try.
It’s looking good so far. Wow larger than life.
Comedy value 10/10
Shop banter 10/10
Skill level.. fancy a brew while we research it? 😎😎
Alec, might I recommend "faking" the rolled lip by making a ring using hollow round stock, then cutting a channel in it, and sliding the end of the shade into the hollow round stock and just welding it to the shade?
Great work Boyz. Never give up!
I would check with the sheet metal master , Ron Covell.. you could learn a lot watching his channel
"The more you do stuff, the better you get"
Words to live by from Alec Steele.
Oh Yeah!!! Thanks Alec!!!
New Alec drop let’s goooooo
Hell yeah I was waiting for this to come out
3:42 I almost spit my drink all over the screen when you sang dumb ways to die getting ready to hammer on your propane tank🤣
13:21 me every time my dad or grandpa asked me to hold a tape measure as a kid! 😂
(I quickly learned not to do it, but fought the urge to do do it every time, lol)
When I make big circles with sheet metal or steel, I usually add reinforcement bars to keep the circle true. Once I got everything buttoned up, I remove the reinforcement bars from the material. I weld the bar, diameter of the wanted circle inside of the sheet matal. Then add another crossing the first just behind the first. This reduces the chances of the weld busting and the sheet warp. Great idea in using the ring for help the seem to more ridged.
Try bead rolling a flat sheet first then welding in into the cone shape
10:33 the dog collar of shame
Seeing that fold i rembered my dad showing my that back when he did heating and cooling in the 90s
This is pretty dam cool!
Alec you took measurements last episode and now this episode are ALREADY fucking with the dimension!!!!!!!!!!
Would love to see a Ron Covell colab
You need to talk to Colin Furze. Two legends working together would also be amazing to watch
I have seen big ling strong springs on cattle trailers and horse boxes for lifting rear door up, think ive seen them on some old low loaders on the ramps as well
Also about the springs from your last look at aumotive rear springs also a chart about them because your angle of mounting also effects there spring rate
You should probably invest in some ear muffs for the pup if they’re gonna be in a noisy workshop. Total cutie btw. 💚
Sheet metal work is riveting.
10:32 "Ello!" classic Brit, so cute... also, the human sized cone of shame. haha
I'd love to see you make a machine, just like the rolling die that he made, manufacturing is one thing but creating something FOR manufacturing is another crazy project
That was the most chaotic Alec Steele episode i've ever seen
Awesome🔥
13:13 jaimie saves the day haha
Alec! How is the house refurb going? Wanted to see a series of that!
Mrs. Steele must have the patience of a saint. If my partner saw me doing a quarter of the stunts y'all are doing she'd be very upset with me. 😜 Stay safe and keep forging
Hey Mr. Steele
Sorry for giving u the tip earlier but for your Lamp circles next time get some infos from the tin smiths or sheet metal workers the guys who works on the Roof :D
😊😊😊😊
With best regards chris
I just like that Montana has rubbed off on Alec and he says "two thirty" instead of "half passed two" 😎🇺🇸
I told you to visit Colin. He is only 2 hours away.
You should try leather working again, it would be great to see some more custom sheaths like you did with the bowie knife.
Could use a backing ring out of 1"x⅛ to stiffen the ends. Spot weld
"I'm sure somebody knows how to do this right"
Ah yes, by measuring and doing your calculations first instead of winging it xD
You need an outlaw still builder to show you how to make all that in a matter of no time.
They use copper not sheet metal, but they probably have some good techniques.
@@Skankhunter420 same technique
@@Skankhunter420... Copper comes in sheet form.
Makes a compass, draw a circle on the floor, compare the steel ring with the circle, fix the ring so it fit the cirle.
i hate that these always end just when they get interesting! haha
I LOVE LAMP!
I’ve watched all of these videos and half way through this one is the first time I’ve thought “what kind of light bulbs are you going to use for this?”
When someone who has all the kit and experience to eork with a material is asked ' how much do we love working with sheet metal?'
Answers 'not much'
😂
Priceless insect reaction😅
Why does Jamie's face always look like he just woke up.
Was that it? The entire episode? Talk about drip feeding the content... and the ad was like... 2 minutes long 😂
Do you think a garage door spring would work better? And it would look like enlarge version of your Original lamp.
My metalworking expeience (watching Ron Bath on youtube) tells me you would do a great job using some kind of MDF form, circle patterns for examples 😎😎
Oddly old school builders, stone masons chippies etc, would draw it out on the floor, in say chalk, then they could place said items on the drawing as they work with it.
giveing themselves easy confirmation and guidance
I always think of a bead roller as an out-of-spec can opener 🤣
For a spring you could try coil over springs for a keep or car
Regarding quenching steel. Three things could be tried that would create a lot more work.
Pulverize a lot of daily multiple vitamin pills then mix them into water. If it makes a difference then begins the hard work of figuring out which part or parts or combination of parts had the effect.
Almost as complicated but easier to do would be to saturate water with salt and then with sea salt which has a lot of minerals.
5:41 - This is the best audio of the video, he should have done an old timey ad voice-over.... LoL
Edit: Any bets on if he orders a moth costume for Jamie before the end of this series¿? 😂😂
Use Silicon Bronze mig wire, its great for lighter steel as its a braze rather than a weld and you get a nice looking goldish weld seam/bead
I say, that’s a mighty fine Gemini capsule you’ve built there…
The job 'bark at passerbys' 😂
This cliffhanger was better than Game of Thrones season 8
I have a tiny ring bender that I use to radius fretwire for guitar repair. It didn’t even occur to me that they come in that large, or that it could move material that big.
when you are gonna weld the pieces together try to cross the weld seams so it is stronger and is less likley tear all the welds
Nice!
You should try making a watch. Use the insides of your sample watch but make the strap and case yourself. Like you did for the your pen.
Very easy to tell, neither are a circle. Yet. However, mark out a circle on your peg table there, arrange pegs. Weld your bar. then fit the sheet. Trim to shape/size.
You need to put a drill attachment to that loop roller it’ll make your life a lot easier
I hope you're getting a massive light bulb for this lamp. Maybe that glassblowing place you visited could sort it out
I feel like Colin Furze could be of help with this one...
I love the lamp. But, the bending moment when you extend it outward is huge. You'll either need a base that is wide enough and heavy enough that it won't turn over...or, you can bolt it to the floor.
