  • The wheel fell off my car and caused some damage that I've been avoiding to talk about, until now.
    The car is a 1966 Mustang Fastback with a factory V8 and T5 transmission.

    Great video sharing this issue. We all make mistakes building, restoring, and racing cars. I can’t even count the amount I’ve made!
    It’s a good idea to get those fenders right the way you want it and it should be. Sounds like a great winter project!

    No shame in that at all. I recently had a very similar experience but got even luckier than you. I had just finished putting the rear tires back on my ‘65 after rear seat belt install. Threw my boys in the car for a drive around the block and heard a ‘rub-rub-rub-rub’ noise from the rear. We immediately pulled over and the lugs had come loose. Thank god we caught the issue, but it was 100% my fault. I tightened them but didn’t TORQUE them. Called the wife and she brought be the torque wrench and we were good to go. Like you, I get very lucky and it taught me to slow down and be more careful. And now when I clean and paint my drums, I’ll be more aware of this as well. Cheers, Andy! Love your videos…

    Been there buddy. It’s a blessing that this happened with quarter panels that already needed repair. It could have been a lot worse. You still have an awesome car.

    I have been in automotive since 1978 to 1999. And I find this happens more with inexperienced and poorly trained people who mount your new tires. They do not adjust their impact wrench. And I bring a torque wrench set at 85lbs. They can run it up on a low setting, but they have to be torqued by hand. And I showed a manager by backing off a lug and it would still click instantly on 85 lbs. The used experience is also over torquing oil pan plug bolts and stripping them. I once was at an oil fast lube. A customer next to me had a Sunbeam Tiger. I heard the owner and the tech with a heated exchange. The tech had taken out the wrong bolt thinking it was the filler, and something went clunk from the shifting linkage. The tranmsmission had to be pulled. Also over torquing pressure plate bolts. Here is my rule of thumb. After a bolt or nut is loose with a boxed wrench, I only use 1/4 inch 6 point sockets, and that includes reassemble. Than anything that needs torquing is set per specs. After decades I feel the amount on bolts like bell housing, starter, things that don't rotate. Anything rotating is torqued. Sorry this happened. I worked for parts stores and a Ford dealership, auto machine shop, and custom car builder. I have seen seasoned mechanics put the lift arm wrong and crunch a whole front fender. And when we built customer cars, the first question was application of build, street, or track. I had a car once low like yours, till I took the pan off bottoming out on an old country road.     I feel your pain I got screwed by a local mustang man. After I got it home it was a rustang from front to back. Never the less Im bringing her back to life. Hang in there and fix it right.     Years ago, I had a similar thing happen except that my wheel flew off. I was driving on a major highway with two lanes of traffic to my left and two to my right. I remember my daughter yelling that she could see our wheel come off. After pulling over, I searched for the tire but never found it Amazingly enough, it didn't hit another car and apart from replacing the wheel the only cost was replacing the lugs. Earlier in the day, I had checked the nuts with a torque wrench so I don't know what caused it. I do remember a weird sensation like you mentioned for a few minutes before the loss.

    Thank you for sharing" It happened to me once on the freeway. Front right tire, I pulled over as soon as I heard the wobble, stoped retighten my bolts no issues lucky me 🙏

    Well, I went to go get a 72 mustang coupe with my dad which was about a year and a half ago. I was 17 at the time. The floor pans were pretty rusted out, the engine bay had 3 rusted holes in it, and the trunk had a bunch of pitting. I started out just saying I was gonna paint it (Like that was only gonna happen). Soon enough the whole car was apart and the engine was pulled and at the machine shop. The car had 220k miles and the owner still drove it sometimes. I was able to drive it around even though the carburetor was stuck sometimes and had a leaking diaphragm and it actually ran okay other than a little rod noise. I ended up pulling literally everything out of the car though. I learned a whole lot about what to do and not to do for the future. My dad taught me to do bondo and body work and we got the whole car in primer soon enough. He taught me to weld on like one or two patch panels on the floor and I was basically on my own to figure out how to weld sheet metal (he is good at thicker welding like on machinery but not so good at sheet metal). I ended up putting two new floor pans in, a bunch of patches in the trunk, and engine bay patches. One problem, I lap welded everything(my beads were actually really good though and I did spot weld it to the whole frame) Structurally, it was overkill and I ran a bead around the entire thing even though the door edge of the pan was originally just spot welded. But it looks like crap on the under side of the car and it is the one thing I regret doing. I did seal all of the laps with polyurethane and body sealer and undercoated it twice. I’m not worried about rust. But it still is gonna make people wonder wtf I did. The top looks great. I ground down my welds flat and ran a small amount of bondo over the whole edge and you literally can’t tell from the top. That was my big mess up/ “regret”. The door was rusted out on the bottom and I actually welded that one right and it came out great with a method I saw on CZcams where you tack your sheet metal on over what you are fixing, cut a 45 degree slice between each tack, and then cut your tacks one at a time and push it in flat, then weld it flat. You can pull out the old piece from the inside and it worked great for my door. (This was the part of the door where all the grooves and bends are in the front bottom) To keep this from going on forever, I learned to put 3:55 gears in it(which I did right even though it was complicated and it took me a long time), a 4 barrel intake, mild cam, t5, a brake job, adapted a booster and master from a 97 mustang and welded the two pedal brackets together so my steering bolted up and I could have the pedals and booster off of the 97, and painted all the floors and engine bay with rustoleum gloss black tractor paint. The car is going to be dark green 4Q like it originally was, with the dark green interior. It has all the original stuff (literally all the original stuff) Dealer air installed in 73, I have the original hubcaps and keystone Klassics too. I’ve done all of this work and I still don’t know how to tune a carburetor yet which is kind of funny. Just haven’t gotten to that yet. 19 now and know a lot more about classics.     Thank you for sharing your story with us, don't feel bad, 35 years later and my wife still reminds me on how I let her car down off the jack "Indy Style" without moving the jack stand far enough away thus crushing her rocker panel. (whoops!) We've all been there, please keep on posting!

    Welcome to the "Ooops" Club, Andy. I did almost the exact same thing this summer in my 65. I was working on my rear brakes and brake lines, and hand tightened the lugs. Pulled out the lug wrench, set it down, and completely forgot to tighten the lug nuts. Then I went for a test drive and lost my driver side rear wheel and slid down the road for about 30 yards. I got lucky in that the rear tire just rubbed up against the quarter panel and left black rubber all over it, but no denting or tearing of the metal. Lost my brand new brake drum out in the desert somewhere and it's still out there to this day. I did the same thing you did...I found one lug nut and used one from each of the other three tires and limped it back home. Luckily I was driving at a slow speed and only about a mile from home. Had to get a new rear tire, new brake drum, another backing plate (that was hard to find), and new brake hardware. Car is running great now. You now have a "No Sh**, There I Was" story to tell.

    You probably just saved a dozen other mustang owners from the same fate...so no reason to be embarrassed. This sort of stuff happens to us all. I remember you having two different drums on the rear perhaps the shoulder issue would be a non issue with a new properly sized drum as I don't recall my drums having this issue.

      No, this is definitely something that I could do on either wheel, those shoulders need to be there on those wheel studs to correctly position the drum with the wheel hub. :)

    I am on my second 66 Coupe, and watch your video's multiple times when I am upgrading something you upgraded. I feel your pain, it actually hurt listening and watching this video. Glad you both are okay. Keep the videos coming. PS: I just installed the Borgeson steering gear box, and while it was up on stands, I rotated the tires. After seeing this going to check and make sure everything is seated, even though I didn't take drums off.

    Great video. Trust me Brother... All of our car have brown stains on the whitey tighties. I see how this happened and will put it in my memory bank. Plan on the outer fender wells also when you attack the quarter panels.

    Also, I replaced studs on axles back in the 1970s and those lug nuts back than had an impact took that swedged the lug studs on the wheel side so that the lugs don't loosen.

    Andy, as you said, things could’ve been so much worse. I had an issue with an improperly torqued rear wheel and was lucky enough to be a block from my house when I realized what the issue was. I was able to limp it home at a snails pace before any damage occurred. Keep up the good work and film your process to repair things, that will be satisfying to watch! 🤙🏾

    Dang. Hate to see that. Live and learn and like you said, could have been much worse. The rear quarters and fender lips don’t want to roll on these cars because of the double wall of the quarter and inner panel meeting. I got mine flat. Short story on how, I cut the inner wheel tub part where it meets the fender off after drilling out the 25+ spot welds and then hammered the fender portion flat against itself and rewelded it. Of course my car was not painted so I could do it that way. Might be a way to address any tire rub when you repair those quarters. Good luck and keep the vids coming.     I almost lost the front wheel on my 66 mustang last summer. I had gotten a used hub for a disc brake conversion and when i replaced the studs they just didn't seem right ,snug but not solid. I drove the car a few times with no issues until i heard a metal clicking. I pulled over and checked the lug nuts and they seemed hand tight so i tried to limp it home until it shot a stud out from the back side of the hub. I was able to pull over before the wheel came off so I definitely know that feeling. Your channel is great so keep the progress videos coming.

    That's just bad luck Andy, the most important thing is everyone was ok. Maybe you should consider grinding that edge of the lug nuts down to avoid any other possibility of it happening again. Keep rolling buddy.

      Grind the edge of the lug nuts? No, that wasn't the issue. Grind the edge of the wheel studs? No, those shoulders need to be there to position the drum correctly on the wheel hub. What I need to do is pay attention when I'm put my drums on and make sure they're fully seated. :)

    Been there done that. On 69 Datsun Roadster I used to have.Thought I torqued down the rear lugs nut. Luckily going slow after leaving the driveway felt something weird. Stopped and checked wheels...rear ones were sitting at a slight angle. OOOPPPSSS. Luckily close to house...got jack and tighten them up.

    Hello Andy! Sorry for your issues but glad it didn't turn out a lot worse! I am going out to the garage and recheck my rear brake drums for this possible issue. Thanks for sharing this info with us. Now, I did a bone head move last week before I went to the car show. Got distracted (Wife bugging me) and forgot to put the pins back in the $1000 dollar fiberglas 4" cowl hood. Hood blew off by the end of my little street. Talk about embarrassing moment. Hood flew off but landed in someones front yard. lol very little damage, thank God. So check and double check your work folks, and put those hood PINS back on. Cheers from Motown.

    Good to see all party’s involved are ok. I think we all have had a learning experience. Mine was not fixing a air shock leak. My mustang sat on my 50/ 15s and just ate both tires as I tried backing out the driveway. The repaint will look killer.

    I had my wheel come off on my 66 Mustang coupe. It was the same wheel, rear drivers side. Not due to this problem but due to me forgetting to tighten up the lug nuts when the car was back sitting on the ground after servicing the brakes. I was going down the highway at about 70 mph and thankfully it did not happen then but when I got off the freeway and was going around a big S curve the back end started to shimmy and I heard "Ping ping ping" as lug nuts and washers began to fly off and hit the pavement. Just as I realized what happened CLUNK the back left of the car hit the ground and the wheel was out and shooting past me. Luckily I had those Lakewood traction bars on at the time and they acted like a sled foot and protected everything. No damage to the car/fender and I was able to pull off to the side of the road. I did have to chase down my wheel and tire that was about a 1/4 mile away oddly enough in an open field right next to a Les Schwab tire dealer. The tire was about 30 feet away from crashing through their showroom window. 😬 Anyway, this is such valuable information because even though I am pretty diligent about torquing down my lugs ever since I was never aware of this problem and will be on the lookout from now on. In fact I have been doing a bunch of work on my car this winter including new brakes, wheels etc, I will go back and double check my drums on the rear. Thanks Andy.

    Great video explaining what happened. I would have never thought that the stud could hold the drum off the axle like that. I will now always look twice to make sure that my drums are fully seated before I torque down the wheels. This could easily happen to anyone. What seems strange is that usually studs do not have a sharp shoulder like that, that turn from the threads into the bottom of the stud is usually very gradual and it would be difficult for the drum to hang up on it.

      That shoulder is a locating device. It’s sized to fit the holes in the drum and it’s a larger diameter to add shear strength. When the brakes are used, the shoes inside the drum want to stop the drum from spinning, so for a short time all the load is trying to shear off the five studs. 😁

    I know it hurts, though congratulations on being human!! I had a similar situation on my 65 coupe, after getting a set the same wheels... I had tightened them with a 20volt DeWalt impact gun.. After a short drive, I felt a terrible vibration on deceleration.. I too, was fortunate to stop safely... I had another incident with my 47 Ford, with Hopster ARE wheels as well.. I only use a torque wrench, on each car now. Both to, 85 foot pounds.. God bless !

    Paint and fenders look fine. Don't freak out about it. I would put effort toward largest functional gain. Your paint and body is 95%. I would guess there are other issues more deserving of your efforts. Good content! Carry on.

      I have been putting the money towards other upgrades as the paint/body is as you mentioned, mostly "there". It's one of those things that you know about and it's constantly on your mind, but most people don't always see it or care. :)

      Exactly. If you removed every scratch and ding and put a brand new paint job on, I doubt I could tell the diffence from how it is now without being hypertechnical. And that would consume a ton of effort and resources. Good reasoning Andy.

    That's a bummer but like you said it could have been much worse. Don't beat yourself up too bad, these things happen in our hobby. When I rolled my quarters I lucked out and only cracked the paint in 1 spot. The whole thing was very stressful but necessary due to my tires rubbing.

    Andy, this exact thing happened in my 66. Even the same driver’s side rear wheel. My error was that I torqued the wheel with it still jacked up and did not realize it was in a bind. All the lugs came off at once and I still remember the awful grinding, clunk sound as the rear violently dropped while going down the road. I think I still have some PTSD from it. I was only traveling about 35 mph so the damage was minimal other than the wheel itself.

      Actually, if I remember correctly I had hand tightened the lugs and then let it down off the jack before torquing. Whatever I did, it was obviously the wrong choice. I am now in the habit of checking my torque specs every other time I drive the car.

    Now would be the best time to roll the fender lips. I forgot to do mine before it was painted and it was scrapping the tires when I hit a hump in the road. I tried the Eastman rollers but it's actually a double lip and too hard. Had to go to a narrower and taller tire.

    Aluminum wheels and Chrome lug nuts are a bad combination. I learned that with my first mustang in 1979. the rear wheel passed me doing about 70 on the highway but no damage but a scraped drum. had the same problem later on the front with a set of Cragars with unilug nuts. got lucky again. I think they made them illegal.

    Always torque wheels to 100ft lbs, your not going to hurt anything. That’s how we do wheels in our shop, never had an incident.

      Yeah, I've heard that from others, but then I'll also hear 85 from other mechanics, so it's tough to know where to be. Thankfully this issue wasn't from torqueing the lugs too low, it was just not putting the drum on correctly. :)

    Oh, and if you have to pull the axle, after loosing the four retainer nuts, reverse the drum brake, two turns per lug and now you made your drum into a axle puller, to save money.

    I can see from here the bottom of the quarters/rocker area have more mud than a wet farm field. Take it to a body shop and replace both quarters.

    Andy I know you feel terrible, I know because it happened to me only I think i forgot to tighten my lugs when i dropped the car back on the ground. This happened back in the late 70s. My wife drove the car to work that day. She called me and said, something is wrong with the mustang. So I went to trade cars with her, on my way home the wheel came off, did minor damage. It could have been so much worse she could have been injured or worse. Long story short, I have never made that mistake again and believe it or not my wife is still married to me.

      Great question. I need to time it with a repaint of the car. I really don't want to drive around with a large Primer rectangle on each side of the car for a year while I prepare to paint it. And I don't want to leave the car in the garage because I can't paint it.

      @@fordtechlife It depends on the tire width. With my 4" backspacing and 225/50 tires, I had to roll the lip a little (that's how I found out my quarter panels had bond in them and I messed up the paint). You may have to go with 5" backspacing on an 8" wheel for the rear. On the fronts I ran into the same issue and had to roll the fenders. However, had I gone with a skinnier tire, I might have been ok, but who wants skinny tires? :)
