- Equipment needed:
Bucket, sponge, hot soapy water
Used car or motorcycle tyre (easy to get for free, ask at garages)
Packing tape (1-2 rolls per tyre)
I've been making these for a few years and use them as part of a topic on Japanese music with my year 9 pupils.
I took inspiration from a variety of sources to make these drums, and added my own twists along the way. If you have any other good ideas for how to improve the drum or make it more attractive, please leave a comment below.
Hi Screwfix do a fibreglass reinforced tape (£5.99 a roll) which is ideal for this - I made drums for my partners school group and they’re still going strong after 2 yrs 😀
I was dubious at first, but that is really cool. i think i may give it a go.
Great video. Thanks. How long did this last before it got a hole?
Cool!
Very inspiring.
This is my teacher lol
This is awesome, thanks for posting!
Very cool!
What an awesome idea! Thank you very much pal! And you can customize your drums by changing the tape colors!
P.S: This drum support a lot of hits on it? Is it strong and durable? Btw, can I dare myself and use a RV/Jeep tire? It would sound savage!
customising your drums is a great idea. I've seen people do this by painting the edges of the tyres before applying the tape, but of course, using some coloured tape is a good idea, though probably more expensive. it's fairly durable, you have to try to make sure you're pretty consistent with hitting in the middle of the skin. I have made about 12 of these drums for a class at school and the kids hit them pretty hard; I find myself having to patch up a hole in the skin with more tape once every couple of lessons, but if you're careful you should be fine. I've always fancied grabbing a truck tyre and using that, but it's gonna be tricky to get the tension right with the tape. If you manage it let me know!
How loud is the finished tyre drum? Could I practice in my apartment building without neighbors hearing?
No one will knows try it out xDDD
How loud?
I wonder if this could help on playing the arcade as practice.
Have you considered using a 22.5 inch truck tire?
Awesome! I'm poor but I love drums😅
this is genius
Do you have sheet music for the piece that was performed thanks
wow
Can you use a flat tire?
Yes, all the tyres I've used have been used tyres, some very flat. I find motorcycle tyres work best as the fuchi (rim) has a better "click" to it
♥
Can you tell us how many rolls of tape was needed?
Jeremy Weichsel I made mine with just one roll.I added an extra layer of cellophane to cushion the blow from the sticks.
I use about 1.5 rolls per drum
How much scotch is needed? A good idea!
Ярослав Прага about 1.5 rolls of tape per tyre
Thank you so much!
About 750 ml. Buhzinga!
You mean tires?
in the UK it's spelt "tyre", in the USA it's spelt "tire"
That is the proper English (UK) way
how long does this last?
Until you punch it in the centre lol
"Reuse tires as taiko drums"
i dont have any TYRE BUT I HAVE TIRES
in the UK it's spelt "tyre", in the USA it's spelt "tire"
@@derbygrammarmusic Also Americans would write spelled instead of spelt
it's a tire not a tyre
