Correction: The MiG-21bis comes with a rudimentary Autopilot system, inlcuding a landing function and also a Stablisation function, amongs other things.
Heads up: The beeping sound is your low altitude warning. It's probably turned on in a hot start or auto start, because no one ever turns it on, on a manual start up :)
Cheers
This was my first high-fidelity model, I had no problem learning to fly and fight with it. It's a challenging aircraft but not that difficult, but that's my experience with it.
how much did it take you to learn it?
@@Musou_Black I learned it in 2 or 3 days, I watched a few tutorials and read a manual I found online. It wasn't easy but I just kept practicing and I now know how to fly it effectively
Do you have IRtracking?
I just have a joystick and wonder if Il have fun with it
@@airsoftfreak11 Well, for dogfights you'll need some type of head tracking. You can use track no ir which is a free software and requires only a camera or a phone to track. You could also use smooth track which is not free but is much better and costs about 10 dollars.
The sexiest piece of flying machinery. 🍺
Well that would be the tomcat :-D but i really like the cockpit in the MiG
@Fallen. pengu yes
I was never even remotely interested in flying it (don't feel man enough) but always loved the looks of the cockpit
Compared to a similar jet like the F-5, she is almost like a rocket with her high thrust to weight ratio.
rgr
From all modules I have. This one is most fun to fly.
rgr
Not much fun to fight though
I just gotta say, the funniest thing I saw in a while was when Joker dropped that Nuke in that protect the convoy mission. Surprise!
All R60s are all aspect. The M is just better at avoiding counter measures and dealing with high G.
Both R60 and R60m have very limited front aspect lock range like less then 2km but they will lock and give viggens and F-5s a nasty surprise.
Also the Bis is the 3rd generation of MiG 21 developed in the late 60s and early 70s it is about as different from the original MiG 21 F as a block 50 F-16C is from the F-16A
Ah, thx Sir
In the Indian Airforce, they were allocated to pilots who just completed their training, imagine how daunting it would have been for them to fly and manage a fighter such as MIG21. No wonder it was termed as widowmaker and flying coffin due to the large number of crashes it had. Now only hand full of IAF21's are in the air and after a crash in 2017 where a rookie pilot perished while landing, the airforce made strict criteria that only allow veterans to fly it. Thanks to DCS it will be an honor to experience digitally MIG21 Bison.
I want to point out that the R-3 is the Sidewinder clone, the R-13M is a Soviet development of that with longer range, not sure if the R-60 is a further development or a new design.
Also The R-13 has a greater range than both R-60s So I usually take 2x R-13M1 and 4x R-60M if I want to be competitive.
thx
@@grimreapers Also, R-60's are small and lightweight (44kg with a 3kg tungsten expanding rod warhead). The original din't have a cooled seeker, the M has a nitrogen cooled one with a 3.5kg warhead. Funny thing is that in some cases the warhead is laced with about 1.6kg of depleted uranium to help penetration. It also has a short minimum launch distance R-60 300m, R-60M 200m.
R-60s are dogfight missiles. Kinda shitty range, but I prefer them
Excellent and much needed reviews! Thanks!
My first module, unforgettable.
What a way to start!
Same here.
@Mechanick Absolutely. Back in the day I knew little to nothing about actual flying physics in simulator, plus the overwhelming analog systems in the Mig21 discouraged me. I picked it up after a few years flying the F-18, I started loving it even more.
Cap, there was some ground rumble on takeoff, but it was almost imperceptibly quiet (even to me) and was quickly overshadowed by the sound of airflow over the aircraft as you gained speed.
It's a part of my childhood , I remember watching and waving at them when they flew over us. The OCU base for fighters is a few hours drive from my home, now these have been replaced by IAF Sukhoi Su-30MKIs that are larger faster and louder. From time to time they scare the shit out of the people with high altitude sonic booms, but I miss the MiG because they flew lower giving us a better view.
I am not a big fan of exagerated switch sounds.
I recently fell in love with the MiG-21, wish there was more games with good ones
What if you wanted to: R-55 But God said: Helmet visor On/Off
I bought it as my first full model aircraft and I'm absolutely loving it. The thing wants to kill you if you disrespect it in any way shape or form, there's two red "eyes" that light up when you're doing dumb sh*t, letting you know that you're gonna die soon if you go on with what you were doing :)) Mean machine, pure joy to fly if you have the patience to learn how to do it properly. Glorious soviet engineering :)))
I love the way this plane looks!
I started using vr with dcs and mig21 and it’s amazing. I use to use track ir and it’s crap compared to vr man dcs is so much more fun with vr and for so long I never took the vr guys seriously .
but its impossible to dogfight with vr cz you cant see anything. ppi is too low
i have the first generation htc vive and for extended dcs sessions i much prefer trackIR because the vive is a bit too heavy and blurry for me. also with trackIR i can look at manuals and guides and controls while i’m flying which helps for learning planes and doing things outside of the game. at some point in the future i want to get a more advanced vr headset that is lighter and more comfortable and is higher resolution
@@mikkihintikka7273 with a HP Reverb G2 it looks pretty Monitor like, didn't tried pvp with it but the readability of the instruments is +1000% compared to first Gen VR and it's even lighter and more comfortable for me. Got a Rift cv1 before and after 2h my eyes burned away, with the HP I played 3 1/2h straight yesterday without problem
@@nighthawk8104 i have found good vr setups that would work in fogfight
This, and the F-15C are my favorite DCS plane to land.
Is the MiG 21 a good Dogfighter?
Great video cap!!!
this was one of my first module after the famous MI-8 helicopter and i like it very much except the bad behaviour with its heavy rudder. the atomic bombs are a nice addon for DCS which is really underrated or always banned BUT this was the main thing about the whole cold wartime !!
Bought this today as my first FD plane
Nice module check! But actually it would be also good to rate if there are ingame tutorials and how good they are. This is a very important aspect for me to buy a module or not.
Hey Cap! I enjoy your vidoes a bunch. Thanks! I agree with your assessment on the not-great sounds in the MiG 21, which I just bought. I was just wondering if you have any experience/opinion with the MiG 21 sound mods that are out there. Thanks!
"Ha ha, look! I'm flyin' all funny!" How did you know my DCS motto?
The outside sounds like "one" of those RR engines on the 747 . RB211? Can't remember the model #.... Best, Pete.
i think they fixed that sound. today mig 21 took off from the airfield i was starting up my jet and that sound was fantastic
thx
Could we get one on the F-86?
Hey Cap- I was just checking this video out and you talking about the exterior sound of the 21 is dead on. I had the opportunity to sit in an active Indian Airforce's MiG-21 as of recent and when we drove away after the visit was done I remember two of them sitting on the runway just spooling their engines and God it was defeaning. I could not hear anything anybody said with the windows rolled up inside the car and we had to scream to talk. And we were a kilometer away or so. And the MiGs were not cooking afterburners either. Then again the Indian Airforce's MiG 21 is the Bison variant so I cannot say if the engine modeled in DCS is the same used here but yeah. Pretty pretty loud. As for the breaks being deployed(ig)- the "pshhh" sound is pretty realistic. I cocked up a 21 when I was sitting inside it and just pressed the long handlebar on the right to the stick. P.s. i dont have the model for the fishbed in DCS so I can't say if the source of the sound is the same here but I heard something very similar when I was inside the cockpit
The "pshhh" sound at 23:10 is what I'm talking about
Buttons sounds are actually there
rgr I just can;t hear for some reason.
I keep wondering if RWR is implemented correctly or does it actually work the way it is implemented. It has 4 bulbs telling spikes from left/right/front/back quarters. It can flash every bulb separately, depending the side individual spikes come from, also two free or all four of them, if needed. But when constant lock is made on the plane, all bulbs go on and momentarily pilot loses information where that lock comes from. In that situation - shouldn't it keep constantly lit only the bulb corresponding to the direction of the lock and eventually leave other bulbs flash, when other radar beams cross the plane?
At this moment It's like telling a guy he will go over a mine filed but with a metal detector set do beep all the time, no matter where it is pointed...
Didn't they refer to that maneuver at 36:45 as "zero knot" in R2B? :-)
That was actually a good, fair review. There was a bit of incorrect information about weapons (AA rockets mostly) and sensors, which is understandable since you don't fly MiG often, but overall conclusions about their effectiveness were correct. Lack of audial signs of stall and near-critical AoA is annoying, and the stall itself occurs kind of strangely, without much of a wing rock. ECM pod is practically useless apart from flare dispensing, and some even doubt if it is working in game at all. Also, there are sounds for the cockpit switches, but they are quiet (drowned out almost completely by engine sound on idle) and not as good/satisfying as, for example, F-14s. Non-clickable switches are a problem (even though almost all of them are irrelevant for the game, since there are no cockpit glass fogging, CBRN hazards, pilot comfort status etc.), but MiG's interior is getting a rework soon (hopefully). At the moment red and white flood lights are broken, and afterburner flame cone is invisible. Updates to the module are relatively slow to come, but it is worked on and improving. Overall, if a virtual pilot is not trying to follow full real world procedures (and ignores current beta bugs), the module feels great, it is interesting to fly and can use it's arsenal pretty effectively.
Copy thx
When you want to turn on the light and drop few bombs accidentaly,in this jet. So many buttons
i just brought it but when flying it my stick goes dead my throttle works but thats it any help please
You’ve probably figured it out by now, but your autopilot is engaging. I had the same thing, not sure if I accidentally activated it or if it comes on itself during sustained level flight, anyways just turn it off using the big red button on the stick and you’re back in control.
Anyone knows if they fixed external sounds yet?
>English cockpit labels
Aight
I was waiting for someone to comment on this haha, I keep my labels on russian too
I mean, if you're going for immersion, it only makes sense
@@beefs0ck911 I kept them in English for the first 5-6 missions.
Maily to remember what the various knobs and switches do.
Just fyi for anyone who cares: the radar on this aircraft, In game, can only see 30km out ahead of you, aka, 15-17 miles. This is why you must have some form of awacs helping you, which is a puzzle in it's own (mig only has preset radio channels, so awacs must be set up for that, specifically channel 0 or 1 since 2-19 are for air bases). Might make my own video soon :D
Thanks Sir
@@grimreapers Anytime man! Loving your videos. Soooooo much content, I just watch for days! 👍🤙
p.s. I'm sorry to hear about you recent loss, my guy. Keep you're head up and stay strong. I know that's easier said the done, but stay gold G
Can you turn up the external sounds in the sound settings?
hmm possibly. But even if you could it would just make the other planes too loud.
It's quite deadly when u learn to fly it properly
Is the MiG 21 a good Dogfighter?
with the Grom i was able to kill modern Destroyers with 50m flight over sea and autopilot on , when the radar detect you wait a bit and pull up steep in a curve and flat dive to set the Grom and hit the Bastard. worked not every time but was fun. I have forgotten all about this plane....when the afterburner kicks in was always the best part ! 2-3years not flown ., LOL
yes I know, I'm a MiG-21 fan, MiG-21 is so easy to fly, even Iraqi and Syrian fighter pilots claim it yes they are!
meanwhile FC3 aircraft in DCS : Hold my beers 🍻
34:00 Tore the wheels off. Slowclap.
Maybe one day we will have a J-7G with double delta wings to improve the lower speed performance.
At first I didn’t like this plane and felt like I wasted my money but as I understood the systems it’s really a fun jet
Takes a while to get into, but one of the best planes in DCS.
Is it a good idea to have Track ir for high fidelity aircraft to see all the buttons and gauges clearly?
Yes def.
@@grimreapers ok, thanks! I like you and your peers dcs content!
The cockpit reminds me so much of the Hind.
5:50 - 500 kilograms, not lbs. that's roughly 1100 lbs.
also
-PTAB-2.5M: 5 ½ lbs, HEAT anti-tank, 30 per cassette
-PTAB-10-5: 11lbs HEAT anti-tank, 30 per cassette
it says right after the container designation that it is S-5M - 50 mm rocket
S-24B is a later design with rocket engine powder with less smoke (it was a serious flaw in first model, those engine trail was tended to clog the plane's engine and stop it and leave chemical residue on the hull and cockpit glass)
afterburner flame graphics are missing with recent update
rgr didnt that, thanks. Should be fixed soon anyway
This module looked good but it had issues for me.
The first problem was the constant engine failure/flame outs.
Even without radical maneuvers or high G's.
All fuel pumps were on etc according to manual That I checked several times.
This happened into 1-2 minutes into flight and even flying straight and level.
The second problem was even making a soft turn, the aircraft would go into wild yawing and pitching.
Going through the control several times I could not find any problem.
I suspect it is a software issue or an update issue?
I asked for a refund as this plane was not able to fly for even casual flying much less combat.
you are probably moving the throttle too fast on take off if it happens 1-2 minutes in flight otherwise you are just doing too many negative g's the mig cant handle them well
I haven't watched it yet but this one will be interesting … Cause it's a PIG to fly
Would be easier to fly if it actually had proper airflow sounds at high AoA.
Without having your butt in the seat, the only way we can tell how much alpha we're pulling in flight sims is by sound. MiG-21 doesn't have it, unfortunately.
Oh I do … I love the 60's jets, so much more rewarding than a flying MFD auto computer :)
NefariousKoel you get used to what AoA’s are safe or more dangerous at certain speeds. With your extra thrust, you can correct most of your mess ups with more throttle. Unless you are being pursued, then, you are dead meat.
The AoA indicator does make noise.
ah cool
seems like the turn rate should be a little bit better than that to me, but I guess this doesn't account for "instantaneous", just sustained.
i think that's the turn rate and not the AOA... the plane can hold 30 degrees AOA, but at stall speeds you're not really turning at that point...
Thanksgiving sale. MiG-21, Harrier, or Viggen?
All as good as each other! enjoy
1 being awful, 5 being...really good, yes, very good. YOU MEANT extraordinary?
Another good one Cap! Hope the dev's pay attention to these vids you are making, Thxs for being the devils advocate cousin! Just hope it doesn't get you in hot water with them, Bullocks to them then aye Cap!
You know what, I'm always in hot water, just don;t care any more.
I think one point that was omitted here is the VR side of things. And as much as the textures for the cockpit are fine, the scale of cockpit in VR (in default or adjusted PD) is comically small. Literally looks like a child's toy. Also outside of cockpit the model is missing fuselage (you are sitting in a hovering cockpit). The visor is a ridiculous shaded square that drops down in front of you and does NOT move with the VR headset. And I'm very much aware that the developer is redoing the cockpit, but at the moment that this video is published, it's a pretty weak showing from VR visual perspective.
Thx, feel free to add VR comments guys, I can not test it obviously.
@@grimreapers Id be happy to help you test VR side of things. PM me if you need help.
Is the MiG 21Bis a good Dogfighter?
Hell no!
@@grimreapers why not?
while the AOA sound indication is a big bummer, over all the sounds weren't that bad! you are just a little hard of hearing! although sound levels may need adjustment as the engine sound is very loud in the cockpit and drowns out other sounds.
yeah when he was saying "no sound on this switch" im like.. i hear it fine!
Actually, the MiG-21Bis was actually built up untill 1985.
Why are all the instruments written in English? It’s a Soviet aircraft.
30:12 "THERE IS NO SOUND ON THESE SWITCHES"

Hey Super-Cap, here is a possible new video subject for you:
I just noticed that the 2018 Modern Air Combat (MAC) module announcement video has been quietly taken down from CZcams by both ED and Wags sometime in the last week or so. I am concerned that it may be because they are no longer planning to live up to some of the key promises made in the description (even aside from the wildly-optimistic "Fall 2018" release date). Such as:
1) It shall be a DCS module (NOT a standalone game), and
2) There shall be a good discount for existing FC3 owners.
I know there has been some subsequent info about the delay "because we're making it even better...etc". And there was a semi-recent podcast where somebody said it was going to be changed to standalone. But in contrast to that (and only a few weeks ago), NineLine stated directly that MAC should still be compatible with DCS, so we can all fly together online if a server permits it. This was in a direct reply to my comment question on the now-deleted video........
hmm I was unaware of this. I wondered where that went to. Will dig into it.
Damn good catch. I have most of the fc3 modules but I believe the mig 21 was included so I was excited for that...hmmmm.
Cap plz do the Mirage 2000 quickly plz
rgr
I'm currently looking for a mid to late cold war fighter and originally I was considering the MiG-21 but I'm curious if the issues highlighted in the video have been fixed?
Out of curiosity what would you guys recommend for a mid to late cold war fighter?
For ground attack I have the Harrier (can't recall what year version the DCS model is) and I also own the mirage which is a tad outside of the cold war period from what I can remember. I did look at the Viggen but again, if memory serves its a post cold war model.
Any recommendations or input is massively appreciated. In an ideal world I'd have snagged a European or British plane but these don't seem to be options.
hmmm TBH I can't remember what the problems were, I made this a while ago. The sounds have been improved somewhat lately.
@@grimreapers Thank you for the response, I appreciate the feedback and info nonetheless. Out of curiosity what would your recommendation for a mid-late Cold War fighter? I realise it's pretty slim pickings.
Looks like the MiG-21 in war thunder looses too much speed when turning
At least WT got the Fuel consumption right, the Engine is real thirsty and with Burner it is just ridiculous how fast the Fuel gauge is falling down
My God Cap, have you slept at all with this release schedule? Take a break, CZcams and your brand aren’t going anywhere.
problem is once I start a project I can;t rest till it's fin. Stupid brain.
I've had a few people say it doesn't compare to the F-18. In the Mig's defense its a much earlier plane and not exactly a fair comparison.
I think the Hawk might have had a more troubled run than the Harrier. Still wish a Hawk was in the sim. It needs trainers as well as full on combat birds. I'd love to see a Tigermoth. A entry level aircraft that was used to train pilots.
@@sahhull for thé specific versions i even Guess 40.. :)

Absolutely terrifying!
@@grimreapers yes it would! But it would be awesome after being properly trained
Great review. Speaking of Mig 21 engine sound and afterburner on/off effect. Take a look at this video czcams.com/video/MWmb5oEeWAM/video.html in particular between 1.20 and 1.30. Also this czcams.com/video/P-UboWAkMXo/video.html between 2.40 and 3.00. While it is impossible to judge how it should sound inside the plane's cockpit I think overall it is reasonably accurate
thx
I would've rated the sounds a 2 out of 5 simply due to it missing the AoA airflow sounds. Since that is the only eyes-off feedback we can get flying a PC sim like this.
It's especially bad in the MiG-21 since it also departs with practically no extra visual indication during high alpha maneuvers. Audio airflow feedback has been desperately needed in it.
Ultimate God mode in DCS is landing the MiG-21 without bending your gear or crashing.
I seem to manage one out of every 3. Lol
It's tough cause she falls out of the sky like a rock if you are just a touch under 300kph. You need a bit of velocity to keep her at 5 or so degrees AOA.
But I lover her anyways
Check your maximum landing weight mate
do they fall from the sky in the game like indian airforce does :p
One more thing it doesn't break at 9g+ loading which is unrealistic
meh I'm sick of planes breaking
This is Bis variant, from early 70s. Even official manuak allows it to 8G and safety factor for this old non care free FbW planes is great sa it could easily withstand some 10G at cost of faster degradation of it's structure.

This must have been a very "diffictult" video to make.
This one is a bit outdated review i think.
In summary. This jet is a piece of junk that's only still operated by north korea (and a few countries no one has heard of) in any meaningful number and capacity and there are plenty of reasons for that. Sure india flies this stuff still, but only because they bought 1200 of them back in the day and still have them laying around.
Also did you just say that this thing is more difficult than the A10? That's nonsense. The A10C is super modern and has a logic to it that makes sense, everything is digital and the few switches that you do need to switch are fairly common in all aircraft.
The mig21 is just an inside out porcupine in comparison.
I hate that module! Would give it back / sell it back if I could! Waste of money in my opinion!
@@sahhull Nooooo, hope your opinion changed man ;D i love a-10 its definetly my favorite atm. im thinking to get mig 21 now lets see :D
