When I hear "there are too many kids who need homes" it doesn't make me think more people should adopt it makes me think more people should have free access to birth control and sex education so they can choose to have children if/when they are ready.

Single mom by choice here....I wanted a girl and did PGD genetic testing with gender selection, and had 2 girls and 2 boys (embryos). I put in 2 girls, got a chemical pregnancy. Froze the 2 boys for later. Next cycle, put in all 3 embryos without testing and ended up pregnant with 1 boy. I'm due next week. So, sometimes you want a specific gender, and unless you pay $$$$$ to keep sorting the embryos according to gender with IVF, you won't get what you want. There's no guarantee that when you put in girl embryos that they will implant and result in the live birth of a biological girl.

We were initially planning to take them all through time, but when we found out how many they actually were, we got scared and doubtful. I really hope they are going to make embryo donation legal in our country (Italy) because we want all of them to have a chance at life. I don't want to die knowing that one or two are still frozen there. A friend of mine did IVF too, and she said she wouldn't donate any embryos left, mostly because she would be too scared that that person and her "own" children could meet and have a romantic relationship. I would donate in a blink, without a second thought, to anyone from a relative to an anonymous couple of any gender on the other side of the world.

The three-person baby thing was a bit confused, but it was presented pretty confusingly in the media too. To understand this, you need to know a bit about mitochondria. Mitochondria are like little mini-organisms that live inside your cells and help them. The mitochondria are very important in the way cells use energy, you might have heard "the mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell". The mitochondria have their own DNA which they use to make more mitochondria and to make the tools they need for their energy processing job. That's all the mitochondrial DNA is for. Mitochondrial DNA doesn't code for much that's visible in the overall human, or anything you'd think about to do with relatedness in families. The only time you really notice differences in mitochondrial DNA is when something is very wrong, and the person is very ill because their mitochondria can't do their energy processing properly.
Egg and sperm cells both have mitochondria, but an embryo gets all it's mitochondria from the egg and none from the sperm. In a "three person baby", you have the nuclear (main) dna from the two parents who will be bringing up the child, and the mitochondrial DNA from the "third" donor parent. This is useful when the parent who makes eggs has a mitochondrial disease. It allows that person to have biological children using their neuclear DNA without passing on their faulty mitochondria, so they can have a healthy child they're still related to.
Taking mitochondrial DNA from Jamie wouldn't make the baby related to him in a way that would make much difference, because the mitochondrial DNA is only used for the way the cell uses energy.

The same concerns were, and to a certain degree still are there regarding donor egg/donor sperm/donor embryo and egg sharing etc. This is obviously an extremely contentious and important topic, which I'm sure over time will evolve. It will take an awfully long time to be considered before used, especially in the UK where genetic modification is very regulated (for instance eye colour is one of the many genetic characteristics that can be chosen, but the UK don't allow it in fertility treatments, and genetic testing and its implementation is only currently for chronic health issues of the child that may be passed down from the biological parent/donor). If this will ever come to pass in our lifetime is yet to be seen, but I'm forever hopeful for the continual discoveries and improvements in fertility treatments, and pregnancy conditions, because so much of our creation and growth is still very much unknown.

However yes you're right adoption should be thought about more by some people too because its not all about biological instincts. However some people bio instincts are very strong so... adoption is not a second choice and is not worse def not, it's just that some people have different instincts some want to adopt a lot more than others instinctually.

I'm so happy I came across this video, my girlfriend and I have been doing research on how we could have children together, and we came across a process that would use my bone marrow as sperm and her egg, or vice versa. The process was still very much in the making, and we never came across a set name for it. This sounds a lot like IVG, and a lot less painful as drawing bone marrow is not at all an easy process. We are incredibly excited about this process as you both are, and I really hope for all of us and many other people out there that it soon becomes a fully functioning process!

I’m a kid of the care system and I now work in it as a support worker. Believe me when I say that adoption isn’t all it’s cracked up to be and I got one am absolutely not judging you for wanting to have your own children. I work with so many young people who have been adopted and eventually ended up back in the system because their parents didn’t have enough support. People see adoption as this magical thing that fixes all problems, and don’t get me wrong, when it works it’s amazing, but it’s the perfect thing that we’re often led to believe. I’m not trying to put you off adopting though, I just wanted to throw in my opinions and experiences. 😊

I know this from a different perspective as the younger sibling of kids who were adopted and it turned out badly. My parents (bio parents of me) adopted my cousins because they were being abused by their parents, and they both ended up sexually molesting me, and one of them ran away at 16 and didn't come back, and the other got returned to the foster care system when my parents realized he was a danger to me. Turned me really against older adoption for a long time, and only gradually got to the point where I might consider becoming a parent to an older adopted kid. And one of my hard limits is that I want my older adopted kid to be my youngest child, preferably with a significant age gap between them and any other kid I have, because I was over a decade younger than my cousins and utterly helpless, and if I end up adopting a kid with similar issues to my cousins, I don't want them having access to a vulnerable younger child.

Stem cell research and genetic modification are my passions, and knowing that couples like you guys would seriously benefit from that work, it makes me even more excited for the future! I do believe that to get the cells from Jamie for the final method, they dont need specifcally stem cells, there is a process to turn specified cells into nonspecified cells/stem cells and into other cells again. That process was developed only 3-5 years ago, and now it's being planned to be used to help infertile couples have children and help treat or cure genetic diseases, its just amazing technology and I wish people weren't so stigmatized against it.

All of the teachers who teach biology at my highschool were supper supportive of everyone in the LGBTQ and wouldn't take any bullshit from LGBTQ-phobic kids. They actually started a tradition at the school by putting LGBTQ Safespace stickers on their windows and almost every other teacher joined in soon after. They were my inspirations for going into biotech, gene therapy, and stem cell research, and I'm going to put those skills toward helping people just like they helped me through Highschool in an extremely religious town.

Just a small precision (because I’ve got to flex that Biotechnology MSc), in the « sperm boat » scenario there would actually be no trace of Bob’s DNA in the child , the child would get 23 chromosomes from Jamie and 23 from Shaaba + her mitochondrias (and so the mitochondrial DNA) also the child would automatically have 2 X chromosomes. A scientist in Brazil claimed to have made a 3 parents baby (to fix a mitochondrial disease) but I don’t think the research was published in a peer reviewed journal so it’s not that reliable of an information 🤷‍♀️
