I love seeing new work from them.
Their games with really cohesive plots tend to not be scary, and their games that are quite scary tend to have very disjointed plots.
However, every game is unique, and an improvement in some way from the last project.
I can also say without a doubt that their body of work for being such a small company is impressive both in creativity and size.

I was sure 'jisatsu' was self murder, but that second kanji has (at least two) homonyms. One for murder 殺, and one for taking images 撮. Both have the ON yomi reading of 'satsu'.
Oh, and I've seen this title translated as 'Selfie' - which makes sense.
It's oddly close to a pun in English. "Shoot myself" can be said in regards to shooting with a camera.

That effect where you could only see the outline of the person behind the curtain when your flashlight wasn't shining on it was very cool, it spooked the hell out of me. I'd say this one is a 10/10 for Chilla's Art.

Something chilling about the game making you kill a koi. Those aren't eaten in Japan at all since they're more of a symbol (plus carp is an acquired taste - a Christmas dish where I'm from but not all cultures eat it, since it's considered a "dirty fish")
This felt very analogue horror inspired but in a good way. The walking censor bars are weirdly chilling as well as the random Mary's appearing.
Koi are definitely a treasured fish in Japan but you’re not entirely correct when you say that they’re not eaten at all. It’s not a common dish but it can still be acquired in several prefectures, although I believe they need to be bred specifically for consumption. I’ve only seen it eaten raw or in a soup but I’m sure there are other ways to order it
@@wollywog42 Thanks for the correction! That makes sense, it’s just what I’ve been told by people while I was in Japan but yeah I can see it just being rare rather than not present at all. Kind of like most Japanese people cringe at the thought of buttered rice but the rice they get at an Indian takeout is technically buttered with ghee and they have no issue with it.
I love carp. The thing to keep in mind though is that it's important when and where they're caught.
The skin CAN taste a bit muddy, under certain circumstances, but you can still just eat the meat.
It hit me a bit personally since I really love my pet koi. When I was much younger I had a koi that got so used to my presence that I was actively able to "pet" it. He was giant too and luckily got really old. This might sound weird but they are kind fish.
The scariest thing this that there are people who had squatters in the attic and didn't know about it for weeks.
Or that man who had a woman living in his vents 😭 and was taking food at night

The game reminds of this old youtube channel where the guy tours his house during a storm. The house loops itself and the rooms become more corroded and unidentifiable. I wonder if it influenced this game. I think markiplier made a reaction to that video

The whole tattered aspect of the place reminds me of the “My House Walkthrough”, given the ambient sound and walking through a place that feels like it definitely doesn’t belong to you

Yeah, like, those virgin Mary statues looked so out of place in that japanese setting, that it was pretty creepy...! I think the white statue is Saint Anthony... because of him being bald and holding those flowers, not sure tho

@LucyTohsaka I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be St. Joseph as he's the one usually depicted with Mary. Also, when I searched "St. Joseph statue" pretty much every result looked like the one in game. And since Joseph is the Saint of dying, I think it fits more for him to be the one shown.
The atmosphere of the house is absolutely terrifying. They really did a good job on making it as creepy as possible. Also, Manly and his slow turns are killing me, I keep anticipating a jumpscare to happen! 😅

17:00 this is quickly becoming one of my favorite effects in horror games. There's something incredibly eerie about just covering stuff with a black box and leaving it up the the player's imagination.
Dang, Chilla’s Art really stepped up the graphics quality since the last time I saw their work.
There is something charming about the retro graphics, but I am excited to see what they’ll do with an updated style.
Edit: Okay this is giving me huge Resident Evil vibes and I’m here for it.

You can still sorta see their handiwork on the character models but no kidding, the visual quality has gotten so much better over time. They've come a long way from the Chinchillabucks game, which didn't LOOK bad honestly but it's a good benchmark

The model used for the antagonist (57:11) really looks like the infamous japanese cult leader Shoko Asahara, making this game even scarier imo

For some reason the black censor bar "enemies" scared me more than anything else Chilla's Art has made. Like whatever is slowly following you is so horrific and alien that reality glitches out and the only way to represent this entity is with a censored square!
Interesting that this game has many Chritstian elements that gradually appeared the more into the story. At first the house is typical Japan style even with that tanuki, and then there's picture of a guy (i presume jesus), the old man praying with cross, the outhouse voice speaking in old english style, the inverting of crosses around the house, Mary statues, cross graves,... wonder what could these mean, something satanic going on here.
Also the song at the end is a Japanese version of Scarborough fair. A young man delegates certain impossible tasks to his lover with the condition that she would have to finish those to be able to come back to him. Completing tasks for a toilet demon I guess is similar.

Since it seems to be the most fitting in this story.
I genuinely felt uncomfortable watching this with all the satanic thing going on, didn't manage to finish it and it just really felt different compared to other Chilla's art games.

This is definitely my favorite chilla's art game so far. I like that their games usually focus on social commentary but this was an unexpected departure and it was so cool.
Given it was a Chilla' Art piece, I was honestly expecting it to be *just* squatters (whether mentally ill or otherwise). Yeah, some of his work has been supernatural before, but he's great at the "terror is other people" and I best remember his mundane-horror works. This was still really good, and I like how much cleaner the graphics are (the added quality has been used to great effect), I just kept waiting for a twist that didn't really show up.
Having stayed in some of these old timey Japanese houses as an Airbnb guest in the past when I still lived and traveled around Japan, this game's location and atmosphere really chilled me. Well done, game developer!

I find these Japanese sliding door houses to be tremendously creepy. Something about the layout and the thin walls I think.
the opening area of the house reminds me of that one japanese creepypasta 'my house walk-through' about the guy showing off his increasingly fucked up house.

I used to really love watching horror game playthroughs, but ever since I developed a heart condition I can't really watch people scream and get jumped all the time so I had to stop for a few years. You're the only channel I can watch them on now, because you seem so calm the entire time, the sound mixing is level, and yeah, I do jump a little at the scares, but it's way better. I don't feel like my chest hurts by the end of it and I got to enjoy interesting content. Thank you, Manly.

I see people on YT and other platforms using the Forbidden Word freely and copiously; I've never actually seen anything get taken down. I really don't buy the 'it's too risky' line -- it's part of the self-mythologizing of one's sensitivity and vulnerability for public display. Asahara, for those unaware was the founder of the Aum Shinrikyo cult that carried out the infamous Sarin gas attacks in Tokyo.
Also, while ostensibly a Buddhist cult, Asahara co-opted many Christian ideas, going so far as to refer to himself as Christ himself
this game's really great, i wonder to some extent if it's a homage to the iconic "my house walk-through" video with its sliding doors, doll room, the presence of grandmother and grandfather, and most prominently the tattered state of it all. very chilling and i can't wait to see other people's playthroughs of this game. One of my favorite games from Chilla's Art. It's basically a haunted house simulator, but it's very effective at doing that. Those Mary statues caught me by surprise and really creeped me out.
Especially the mannequin behind the torn screen, and the atmosphere at the start overall, reminds me a lot of the video "My house walk-through".

Seeing all those mannequins makes me miss "In Sound Mind". In that game you also had to deal with them briefly, but you were able to give them individual faces by putting post-its on their heads. Pretty sure Manly would love that game, too, although it would be too large to be covered on his channel.

Nice game, but i do wish we'd heard anything from the protag thoughout the game it's hard to believe they wouldn't have been freaking out i think that was a missed element in this game. Especially considering they didn't try to escape at all even when being hesitant to go in the first place..

I always enjoy Chillas Art but something about this one was so unnerving in a way I haven’t felt with their other games, I loved it
At 2:45 you can spot "Christ Crowned By Thorns", painted by Antonello da Messina, an Italian Painter. It belongs to a pictorial cycle called "Ecce Homo", that means "Behold the Man" a biblical phrase in the New Testament; just a little art info :D

Really great freaky eerie atmosphere all throughout the game. Agree about the cinematic feeling to the fright. Every time you slid a door open, I felt like there could be something right there. The use of the sounds, the sliding panels, the cupboards, the mannequins - all were very legit creepy. The evil thing in the ground giving orders was pretty cool, including the things it asked for. I can see a child slowly becoming a slave to it.
It also seemed like the house aged with each tape you found. It gave the appearance of elapsed time, with the house becoming more decrepit and corrupted. It was a slow burn, but the payoff was pretty good.
Finding out that manly is playing a chilla’s art game is always a great way to end the day. Guess I’m a bit morbid…😁
This was one of the spookiest Chilla's Art games in a while. I love their more grounded/real-life horror too, but toilet ghost was genuinely super unnerving.

My only complaint is that Chilla's art games are never long enough! I want their games to be several hours long! They're just so good at building suspense and atmosphere! The story is always really good! I never feel like im ready for it be over!
The scariest thing about this game is the fact that they STILL kept their yard in the same terrible condition when they were still alive. My irrational fear of hiding ninjas fundamentally makes me the perfect groundkeeper and I always have my yard immaculate.

Maybe it's just the nature of old, abandoned, traditional Japanese houses, but this game reminded me a lot of that viral video of someone walking around their "flooded" house until it turns into a P.T. type nightmare.

It's funny how the spirit doesn't help with the ritual, or trys to prevent it and just keeps playing pranks.
I mean, if I were in that situation I would prefer that whatever is haunting around there would give some simple instructions. Instead of throwing the tapes around the house, just put them neatly next to the TV and have them numbered. Or give clearly wrong instructions that makes me leave quickly (either by driving off or by joining the spirits, either works).
But no, they just keep locking doors, hide behind curtains, make noise, move things around.
