  • Taryl shows you just why it's sometimes not worth fixing all. He most definitely CAN fix all but a lot of the time it's left up to the customer what they are willing to spend in order to fix something. Also, sometimes it's not financially smart or feasible to fix certain things. Here's just one of many examples. And There's Your Dinner!!

    30 years ago I was working for a Major home / industrial / HVAC appliance company... I was woriing in the corporate office that week, outfitting a new conference room with water source heatpumps.. executive meetings were going on all week with lots of big wigs ... they were in the large "board room" next to where I was.. with the ceiling opened up and me on a ladder.. it was easy to hear everything they talked about (the return air plenum in that building was passive.. so just grates from the drop ceiling into the open area above)... many conversations were being had about how they needed to "shorten the lifespan" of appliances to boost future sales in projected numbers.. even though the compsny had a very profitable factory service division to fix people's appliances and were efficient at it.. they still felt it necessary to boost new unit sales by "streamlining" manufacturing.. "reducing number of parts SKU's".. streamlining meant buying whole assemblies from 3rd party suppliers with no request of replacement parts for the assembly.. less SKU's meant you had to replace a bigger more expensive part to make a repair... it was obvious their idea was to make it harder and more expensive to repair.. thus the customer would just "buy a new one".. using 3rd party meant that quality control on these assemblies wasnt really monitored much.. and thus began the decline.. no factory service exists for that company now.. people have gotten so brainwashed into thinking that 10 years is a long lifespan that when. washing machine lasts 11 years people think its incredible.. yet my parents and grandparents had washing machines easily last 20 years plus with being able to replace a part here and there.. (often times bought at a parts counter and inmstalled yourself)...with people in today's society having zero idea how to fix or build anything.. (im 55.. everyone I knew grew up with tools and knew basic mechanical skills.. not today!).. people are even easier to brainwash..

    This makes me want to get my old Jacobsen(sp?) self-propelled mower going again. Dad bought it new in 1970 and he, then I, used it until the late '90s. Of course, by then, the Briggs engine was worn out and could only be started by using a drill-motor with a socket large enough for the hex on top of the engine. I haven't looked yet, but I ASSuME that it needs to be rebored and get a larger piston with rings to fit, or vice versa.
    The mower is old enough to still have the large squarish plate attached to the crank, with four small cutting blades rigidly bolted to the "corners." If I remember correctly, this type of blade assembly was banned because of folks that didn't know to properly tighten all of the blade bolts to prevent the bolts from loosening and throwing the blade "segments" away from the mower and possibly causing serious injury.

    Loose guides can of course be fixed but that one isn't worth it. Years ago I took an ancient Briggs flathead to my local auto machine shop where the machinist grabbed a guide off the shelf, drilled the block (that valve had no guide, just a hole in the block) and drifted the guide into position. Not bad for 50 bucks and the work is easy if you have something worth saving. Later I scored a milling machine (though a good drill press would do) and learned to use some drill rod to align the quill to a guide bore then drill holes to install any bushing (valve guides are bushings) that way then ream to size. If you have something not disposably cheap it can be worth asking about that fix.

You can’t expect any professional shop to do those kind of repairs for you. You gotta call your Uncle Luther and take your mower over to his shop, which was probably a former chicken coop, and he’ll fix it with a tap and die set and some two part epoxy for you! It might last a week; it might last 20 years. For the cost of buying Uncle Luther a six pack, it’s worth a try!

      Any automotive machine shop could easily drill the guide hole then match up, install and ream a suitable replacement valve guide. If Uncle Luther has a lathe so could he and the mower would in that respect be better than new. I had it done by my local machine shop but on a 10HP horizontal shaft that was worth saving. Push mowers are disposable like toilet paper and that's not always a bad idea IF it mowed enough lawns to pay for itself a few times.

    I learned a valuable lesson buying cheap box store mowers, l have a husqvarna 2654 from lowes, and it's been a pain in the butt the whole time I've owned it,had three mower decks replaced under warranty the first season in use,had the engine repaired twice for oil leaks,mower blades don't last,and the mower deck plugs with grass about every second time mowing 1.5 acres,dosen't seem to make a difference how dry it is

  • @ravenbarsrepairs5594

    Valve guides can be fixed. Any engine machine shop could easily replace the valve guide. Alternatively, if Harbor Freight still sold horizontal shaft engines, a replacement engine wouldn't cost much more.

    My Craftsman with a Briggs engine on it is 10 years old now, bought it new from Sears. I cleaned the carb once, then I switched to ethanol free fuel and added a fuel filter and fuel cutoff. I change the oil once a season, air filter and spark plug as needed, starts on the first pull for me. My Ryobi weedeater (S430 I think?) is even older than that, I think it's from '08 or '09. Replaced the carb with an Amazon unit, did the fuel line/primer bulb rebuild kit a few times, spark plugs, oil changes, just basic stuff and that bastard keeps on going.

    I quit fixing all weed whackers. I refuse to rebuild carbs or use aftermarket carbs because you have a 50/50 chance that they will run correctly. Once the carb is junk your fuel lines, filter and most likely the crank seals are junk as well. Crank seals often go bad when the carb goes bad on a weed whacker because the engine runs lean and quickly overheats.

    • @oldphart-zc3jz
      @oldphart-zc3jz Před měsícem

      I have a perfectly good Shindaiwa that's hung on the wall for years since I got a DeWalt cordless weed whacker. Commercial outfits turn to electric too because there is so much less downtime. All I did was upgrade the head (cheap) for convenience. I'll probably never use the gasser again. Since I'm not cutting bulk for firewood my also perfectly good gasser chain saw collection sits too. I went electric after a shoulder replacement and they're ideal homeowner saws. (I always run the shortest bar and chain that will do the job but that's not strictly required.) I've never had a battery go bad except some ~2003 V28 Milwaukees and I got over ten years out of them. Still have a decent one from 2011!

With slightly amount of drilling out and leather hammer wooden 2 x 6 cut off short board about 1 foot long and laid flat to onto A bench top. To tap it back down into the aluminum head. A little bit at A time until it's leveled out flush like the original sleeve.

    One has to be worried about the future of small engine equipment, built in obsolescence by the manufacturer is the way as they wish to push new machines rather than have old machines repaired. Part of that has to do with very cheap machines hitting the market, it is hard to get cheap and quality in the same product. Not many of us old timers who enjoy tinkering in their garages anymore, even our kids have been brought up in a disposable world and have no intention of figuring things out or getting their hands dirty.
