  • Tips on how to DIY an oil change for the BMW E92 M3 with thinner 5w-50 synthetic oil instead of the factory 10w-60 V8 engine oil. Also covered is the procedure for replacing the e90 oil filter and gasket o-rings to prevent oil leaks. The key piece here is the drain pan that has measurement for accurately reading the amount of oil drained from the engine. Since there is no dipstick, it is very easy to over fill the engine as it takes 9.3 quarts of oil. Let me know if you have any questions, and thank you for watching!

    Thanks for the great videos. I own an 09 E93 M3 and my husband, who was my mechanic, passed away in January and while I USED to do things like oil changes for cars back "in the day", it's good to have visuals and tips for my car specifically. We were planning to do the taillight LCI upgrade as well, so I am glad to have seen on another one of your videos that it is not terribly hard to manage on my own, and I'd rather do what I can instead of going to a shop for every little thing. I do have one question, why are you using 5w50 instead of 10w60?

    • @Sals_Garage
      @Sals_Garage  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi! Sorry to hear about that. Prayers to you and your family. I am glad to hear that my videos are helpful to you. Feel free to ask any questions as I’m always willing to help. I recognize you from the M3 Facebook group, nice to see other fellow M3 enthusiasts.
      For my choice of using thinner oil it’s because I don’t live in a cold environment (California). The thinner oil heats up quicker, provides better protection for the rod bearings/main bearings, and it’s close enough in weight that it won’t break down at high temps. I understand the concern others have and wanting to run the OEM oil weight. Nothing wrong with going either way to me. I learned about 5w/50 from M3 forum posters 👍

    Nice video Sal as always 👍just regarding the oil, I noticed it is not certified A3/B4 group which is for Euro BMW? I like the idea of going 5w50, and from other M3 members and builders, I noticed they strongly recommend the Redline 5w50...so same weight as the Castrol you just went with, but obviously a lot more expensive...but it is worth it, and I saw many testing done on CZcams which had the best results...and Redline 5w50 is A3/B4 group certified...see how you like this Castrol 5w50 you went with, like how car idles with it, cold start, oil burn, smell...etc. Keep up the good work Sal buddy 🤘Cheers. Since buying my e93 m3 I watch all of your content Sal. Quick question: of all your experiences with exhaust changes / mods do you think having a 2 pipe mod done gives a rich sound? I cant have anything too loud as I live mainly around old people (65+ - gotta respect your elders n all) so I am thinking 2 pipe is just right...

    • @Sals_Garage
      @Sals_Garage  Před 2 lety +2

      Yea 2-4 pipe is the perfect amount of sound. I was very happy with 2 pipe mod and secondary cat delete when I did that a year ago, no complaints of the cold start or volume level. I was after more power so I had to take off the primary cats. That is where a lot of the extra noise and rasp comes from (primary cat delete). Good luck 👍

    • @Sals_Garage

      @@Sals_Garage thanks for the insight Sal, deffo agree valved is the way to go (future project) and the guy I am going through here in the UK advised the same regarding the primary cat delete (again future project) but for now I think stock is more than enough power, and I will just get the 2 pipe mod for some additional volume. Lastly, I know you know what you are doing when it comes to an oil change, but I only ever put 10w 60 in my car as per manufacturer instructions. I hd the pleasure of recruiting BMW master technicians and they all said the same, moreover they noted that you should only put 10w60 into this engine. Just thought I would share ✌️

Everything I'm reading is generally positive about 5w50

      I have used 5w50 for the past 3 years with great success. I don’t track the car though so be aware of that. No overheating issues for me here in California weather. There is a lot of oil starvation issues recently and issues with main bearings wearing down so I wanted to maintain good engine wear especially during cold starts.

    The manual says to add a minimum of 1/2 quart at a time or it won't measure correctly. And it also says if it warns you to add oil that you should add 1qt at a time. Also measuring how much oil you removed from the vehicle isn't a good measurement on how much oil to put in. You aren't taking into account that depending on your engine wear and your driving style, you can burn oil, which the manual clearly states as well, therefore you don't have an accurate count of the amount of oil to add. This isn't reliable ever. You also forgot to reset your oil change service interval.

    • @Sals_Garage
      @Sals_Garage  Před 9 měsíci +1

      At the end of the day what matters is the oil level sensor so just fill enough to make that happy and you’ll be fine. 👍

      @Rob-gh2zh Před 9 měsíci

      @@Sals_Garage actually what matters is to follow the manufacturer recommendation. I'm just commenting so people don't blindly follow your incorrect instructions and blow their engine with too little or too much oil.

      @Sals_Garage  Před 9 měsíci +4

      @@Rob-gh2zh the same manufacturer recommendations that destroy the rod bearings in these engines. Sure thing buddy.
      My guide simply stated to put the amount of oil you drained back in as a starting point then top off according to the oil level sensor that way you avoid overfilling which isn’t good. I didn’t reset the oil service interval reminder since I do my oil changes more frequently (every 3k miles) unlike manufacturer recommendations.

    You every think that you’re car might burn some oil (some manufacturers say even up to one quart between oil changes if within spec).
    Maybe some people aren’t draining from both plugs and that’s why they’re over filling.
    Stop giving people bad advice.
    Just put back whatever the book calls for. The amount that’s remaining is minimal and won’t cause over filling.

      What do you mean it's bad advice? This video is pretty good overview of the oil change procedure. Because he also show some extra steps that some people might not do
      - Jack up the car front and rear, because you get more oil out of the car if you jack up both. Some might jack only front and add 8.8L of oil in the car causing an overfill.
      - Drain from both drain plugs... that's obvious on why.
      - Change the crush washers and o rings, no leaks
      - Use a lighter oil if you don't track your car, some people report good result from switching to 50 weight oil.
      - Add the oil the same amount of drained oil, and check with the oil level sensor, so you don't over fill.
      Overall it's a pretty solid good information.
