HOT TAKE? Why adidas Fear of God Athletics Sneakers Isn't a HIT to Many?!

  • Over the years I've been a big fan of #fearofgod #Essentials and #jerrylorenzo as many of you know subscribed to the channel. I've purchased plenty of FOG items, and also sold/donated a lot as I've cut down my collection. Jerry's long awaited #adidas FOG Athletics partnership has fallen flat for many, past its initial release at the end of 2023. I have a theory of why the shoes themselves could not do as well as people assumed they would...but you can comment below why you think they may not be as big of a hit as they could be with consumers?

    That's actually the reason why I never get the mainline sweats b/c we never see Jerry wear them. Like why spend that kind of money when the designer himself only wears the essential sweats? And they're just as comfy at a more affordable(ish) price.

    I’m glad you found it funny! That denim jacket still haunts me 😂 “Fear of Change” was a great way to sum up the current direction of the brand. As for the Adidas line I think I have only seen ESSENTIALS at the gym and never any of the Athletics apparel or sneakers.

    Jerry has been trying to play with the hemlines of pieces…however it’s success rate is very inconsistent. Someone who does this far more spectacularly is Rick Owens. FoG has always been fussy with the waistline too. Rick simply moves the bottom hems of both tops and bottoms that can work for a wide variety of people. Rick is only really playing with length vs Jerry is working with both length and width…and unfortunately not properly succeeding in either.

    Spitting Facts Today! Agree with you 1000%! Love his clothing, but the new drops have been subpar. Sizing and fit of the clothing has definitely gone done. I've returned all of the items I purchased due to the sizing and fit. The seventh collection is still my favorite collection.

    I’ve had this take for years, damage already done but imo, I think Jerry and Adidas should’ve linked up back in 2016/17 instead of Nike. Back then when Ye, Bieber and several others were rocking FOG items with Yeezy it meshed together perfectly. Jerry helped with creating the 750 and Ye himself admired Jerry’s work. Also at the time before Nike, Jerry was rocking Yeezys, y3 and a few ultraboost here and there. It would’ve made sense in my opinion to persue Adi instead. Imagine what could’ve been. Jerry’s design language and ethos would’ve been perfect for that time back then compared to Nike. He still did great at Nike but at the same time at what cost considering how things ended. But like I said damage already done 🤷🏾

      I think you have a GREAT point. I laughed when I finally started wearing Yeezy because it made sense for me to eventually go that route with tons of Essentials/FOG in my closet. The pair well together, similar design language, for all the reasons you listed. What could have been?

    Very true. I was joking that the real athletics was that ultra boost. He even wore Balenciaga in his recent Milan show. I know lots of his fans bought those balenciaga hoodie because he is always seen in them, and of cause that ultra boost he wore became a “Jerry boy grail” item instead of his athletics footwear.

    • @TalksWithTJ
      @TalksWithTJ  Před 29 dny

      That UB could just slide into the line-up and it would be closer to what he actually wears versus just what he sells. The Balenciaga hoodie became a hit because of him with his fanbase, for sure. I'm not sure the long term effect of him rarely in a lot of his pieces but might not be good.

    Honestly I love the look of them, but of the 3 models the Los Angeles Runner is the most comfortable. That being said aside from if you prefer the look it offers nothing that an ozweego or ozelia, which are $50-$60 cheaper and always going on sale, don’t. Likewise the Athletics 1 while I think looks cool released alongside the crazy iiinfinity and the AE 1s which are both substantially cheaper, way more comfortable, and have a good amount of hype behind them. I’m a fan of modern adidas basketball I have the niteball, the streetball, the crazy iiinfinity, the mad iiinfinity, the Yeezy QNTMs, the harden vol.8, the ae1s, and of course the FoG athletics 1 basketball. Barring the QNTMs it’s the most expensive pair yet unlike them it is the least comfortable of the ones I’ve just listed. It’s only saving grace is the not being the least comfortable shoe of the FoG athletics line

    • @TalksWithTJ
      @TalksWithTJ  Před měsícem +1

      The QNTM is insanely comfortable and with resale going down on them, many can pick them up for less. adidas is on a great bball run in my opinion with everything you mentioned from the court to lifestyle. The California is the most practical but available for cheaper in a similar model, like you said.

    I do think him not wearing them plays a role. I also think that in today’s sneaker landscape, they’re stylistically and aesthetically not something the masses are into at this time IMO. I know that’s subjective, but an all black, all beige, all white, kind of sci-fi looking but also blocky shoe, with a white midsole/outsole, isn’t really the type of shoe that’s popular to the masses like that IMO. Many expected some type of shoe(s) to blow people away, and when they ultimately dropped the consensus has seemed like “that’s it? 4 years of anticipation for that shoe?.” Even if he never wears his shoe, I think just a better looking shoe could change everything.

    • @TalksWithTJ

    I think the Essentials line basically diluted his own brand. When people think Fear of God now, majority will think teenagers in baggy sweats and hoodies. This could turn off people that were invested in even mainline items and then you have hardcore essentials fans that complain about the pricing for athletics line. Lose lose situation. Case in point, Jerry might have killed his brand with Essentials.

    • @TalksWithTJ

    Jerry took too long with this line, and the price point in today's economy is not resonating with most ppl. Everyone seems to have resisted paying $200+ for sneakers and clothing now. They wait for items to go on sale or hit the outlets. Regarding his clothing line, I don't have a problem with it as I'm over six feet, so it works for me. Still, I only buy what I need vs. want.

    • @TalksWithTJ
      @TalksWithTJ  Před 25 dny

    Respectfully to Jerry, especially with his athletic background, his clothing is clearly made for “athletes” or individuals whom are of a certain height/build. Also, I generally believe Adidas is horrendous when it comes to marketing. You barely see marketing for their signature athletes, also the creator himself is a bit of an isolated person. I really want to root for Jerry and this brand, but it has become hard to do if his pieces don’t fit the general public & their wallets.

    • @TalksWithTJ
      @TalksWithTJ  Před měsícem +1

      I think those are great points. I think they marketed the AE1 really well, and the other playoff players who have sig shoes. But for FOG, I am not sure if it's more him directing the marketing or the brand, either way, their IG has also been very quiet for athletics.

    Hear me out. As a consumer, Jerry comes across as though FOG "fans" are bothersome and he wants nothing to do with them. He's got an extremely laid back demeanor. At least one he projects for the cameras. To some, that comes across as smug at times.
    FOG is a tiered brand, which is cool but as people have started to snap out of their COVID isolation/depressions, the muted colors may subconsciously put people off now. Personally, I've gravitated towards brighter items or at least something with a pop of color somewhere since we've been able to touch grass again. Pricing, wait time and stale designs gave people enough time to look elsewhere for affordable, consistent designers. I do believe he has a core audience but even they may be having a hard time stayin "Jerry Boy" true.
    To my eyes, the clothing, especially the shirts, is required to have an athletic build with an emphasis on 3D shoulders and traps to make the shirts in particular not seem as though they're still on hangers when worn.

    • @TalksWithTJ
      @TalksWithTJ  Před 29 dny

      I can't argue with a single thing you've said, even the first part because people with little access to themselves, who are really reserved can appear smug. Doesn't mean they are but when he's said things like "higher level ideas"...for hoodies and sweats, it has turned some consumers off.
      COVID depression and comfort was real, and I am glad that people have found their way out of it with the ability to be around people, travel and experience new things, brands. I was fortunate to not be in a dark place at all during those times but even my mentality towards fashion and branding has shifted. A lot of what I buy is to fill gaps, less logos (unless sports teams) and they can be worn with a number of things I already own.

    • @bluntbeats314
      @bluntbeats314 Před 29 dny

      @@TalksWithTJ agreed. That "higher level ideas" line made me do a double take when I heard it. I learned a lot about FOG, at least the Essentials line, watching your vids and a few Jerry docs/critiques. I've watched you style different pieces and it caught my eye early on but then I started to notice the color pallet seemed to be revolving around various shades of the same base color. Similar to Ye but somehow not quite as "energetic."
      COVID was a wild time but none shall be wilder than witnessing the amount of people Mocha 1 Mad during that time! Caught plenty of your vids over that time so I may or may not know how to shop for Essentials now.

  • @sneakerprofiler
    @sneakerprofiler Před 22 dny

    Jerry went to adidas way too late. It’s strange bc he practically lived at the Herzo archives while at Nike. I mean, he’s currently wearing the stuff he wore back then. Wth?
    Y-3 produces everything you would think FOGa would do, and it’s consistently released. adidas doesn’t have room for two premium priced futuristic sub-brands or partnerships. But Jerry is in LA - adidas moved its Bball HQ to LA when Jerry accepted the CD position. adidas is killing the Bball space without Jerry… being in LA seems to be enough.
    Jerry, maybe, should reconsider heading a /// department in which he can express himself while mining the archives.
    CLOT, SPZL and WB seem to understand how to best partner with adidas. They certainly know better than Jerry. Take notes, brother.
