- This video shows complete (except rear sight, front sight) disassembly of the Ruger SR 22 pistol. Here I disassemble the magazine, slide, and frame completely. I try to cover as many proper part names as I can, but you should always refer to manufacturer's manuals for this information.
Important note: The pistol will need to be sighted in after slide disassembly as part of complete disassembly requires rear sight removal.

10 years later, and this video is still helping people. Thank you
It is my pleasure. Thank you!
Most excellent video available for the Ruger SR22.
Glad you liked it!
Thank you so much for your kind words. I am just a hobbyist, and simply wanted to help since there wasn't a video of this.
The best disassembly / assembly videos on CZcams. Thank you.
It is my pleasure. Thank you very much for the kind comment.
Number 1, Thank you for doing such a great video. Best full disassemble of the SR22 on CZcams. Number 2, you are very knowledgeable and BRAVE :)
Thanks again,
I learned a lot! Subscribed
Fantastic tutorial! I did the whole thing just as you described including some mods from other videos. Thank you for the three long videos showing the complete and correct methods, even including the correct size tools.
Thank you for watching. Glad I could help.
Thank you very much for subscribing. And thank you for the kind words. Glad I could help.
Sir...you are awesome. Never seen such an in depth disassembly with this weapon. Thank you!!!!
My pleasure.
Bloody hell! Absolutely bloody fantastic, mate! to say the least really... A plethora of cheers for your patience, detail description and breakdown of each component. THANK YOU!
My pleasure.
At 75 I have done a fair amount of disassembly for various firearms, this one is full of tricky little parts and springs. Unless there is a need to replace a part deep in the trigger group I see no need to perform this deep of a disassembly merely for cleaning. I would resort to good solvents as a soak, then an ultrasonic cleaning followed by vigorous air blow out and flood with a water displacing solvent. Blow out again and even let it air dry or use a blow dryer for a while, then lightly oil the mechanism, blow off the sear and hammer engagement area and apply a good grease there as well as generally blow off the excess oil you applied, just leave a light film. It is easy to get into trouble, invite complications with this deep take down. It is interesting, in this video I see the barrel retainer bolt is a Torx, I have watched other videos where they want to polish or smooth the feed ramp and throat, the majority of comments have said just use a ball head allen driver, to remove the barrel with the trigger group left in frame, which could end up buggering up the Torx or rounding the allen wrench head. Or maybe the fastener is now an allen head??
Thank you for posting this video. Had a hard time putting mine back together AFTER barrel fell out!!! All good now.
My pleasure.
Old lady here cleaning her 2 fot the range again sat. Thank you!!
My pleasure. I am glad the video helps.
Outstanding video, and thanks so much for sharing your knowledge of this unnecessarily complex firearm. Now I'm fairly confident I can get into the guts of this thing to do a much needed trigger job.
My pleasure. Thank you for watching and good luck.
Yeah not sure why Ruger wants to make the 22s in pistol and rifles so complex
Thanks for this great video.
I have done this disassembly a couple of times. First time was tricky, second time was much easier. One thing that happened to me, though - as I was tightening the shorter of the 2 Philips screws that hold the side plate on, the head broke off, leaving the rest of the screw in the receiver. I'm sure it was a defective screw because I hadn't tightened it much at all when it broke. With a drill press, some small bits and a screw extractor, I was able to get it out without any damage. The hole is a 4-40 thread, so I went to the hardware store and was able to find a perfect match in stainless steel. I just had to shorten it a little. I may call Ruger to see if they will send me the factory screw, but it's really not necessary.
***** Thank you for watching the video. Sounds like that screw was bad to begin with, like you said. Good to know you could easily find a replacement. You never know how Ruger would respond since they don't advise people to go to that level of disassembly. They may simply say it was your fault and they will not send anything.
Wow! Fantastic job, Mosin. Are you a professional gunsmith, or just one of the best hobbyists on the TUBE? Your effort here is really appreciated! Alc
Thanks so much for this video. Cleaned my SR22 for the very first time by myself. Very good instructions and video.
Glad I could help.
Good video....I got this gun but I would never take it a part like this what a complicated design.....
Thank you for watching.
If I did take it down that far I would have to send it back to Ruger in pieces and let them reassemble it.
I made that mistake… mine hasn’t worked for 3 years now 😢 just keep procrastinating on sending it in to ruger
I'm getting ready to replace the firing pin in mine (Ruger is sending me a new one, since mine broke.) and this video was the one thing that made me decide to do it myself, rather than send the pistol in for repair. I've never worked on a firearm in my life, but I feel confident after watching this a couple of times. Thank you for that!
shango02005 Glad I could help. Good luck with your project. Hope all goes well. Thank you for watching.
+MosinVirus So, I finally got around to messing with this thing and right off the bat, I'm having issues. The main roll pin on the slide is stuck. I hammered away at it for ten minutes and it wouldn't budge. I'm going to call Ruger again tomorrow and see if they can help.
Thanks for making the video - this is exactly what I needed!! Much appreciated!
My pleasure.
I've had my sr22 a couple years and finally built up the courage to tackle the deep clean thanks to you🤣 Wish me luck and I truly appreciate and enjoy your 1911 build too!
Thank you. And yes, good luck! Take it slow.
@@MosinVirus you definitely got that right!!!!
Fantastic! What a piece of art this little gun is, and your video! Great work, thank you!
It is my pleasure. Yes, it is a nice little pistol. Can be a bit picky with ammo.
Wow, great video. Your directions are very clear and concise. I am currently taking gunsmith classes and your instruction is some of the best I have seen.
Very nice. Good luck in your classes. I plan on taking gunsmithing courses as well. Just requested info from AGI, but I think I will start actually learning next year. Thank you for the kind words.
Thanks for this!
I lost the screw and spring for the elevation sight when I was adjusting it. Found the screw but lost the spring. Called Ruger and they sent me a spring (Thanks, Ruger! ) but I wasn’t sure how to install it but, thanks to you, I saw how to put it all back together.
Excellent. Glad the video helped.
another very helpful video Thank you for showing this.
Sure thing. Glad to help.
Excellent video - thank you! Bought a used SR22 that was in need of a deep cleaning.
Glad the video helped.
why would anyone ever sell one. Mine is #2 on my list of never part with guns.
Thanks for the info. I'll be using this when I duracoat my frame.
Glad the video helped. Good luck with your project.
Taking it apart after watching this great video wasn't nearly as bad as it looked. I've done the slide and removed the lower assembly but never completely disassembled it. It needed a deep clean. The real test was reassembling it and making sure it works. Success!
Excellent! I am glad I could help.
Fantastic videos. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Very helpful!
My pleasure. Glad I could help.
I was taking courses before I had my shop but I can see where your coming from.Good luck with your AGI course and I’ll be looking for your future videos.
I understand. I just feel like I will get myself into trouble trying or wanting to try some things in the course without having the proper facilities.
Holy cow that's a complex little pistol! Just picked one up. I don't think I'll be taking it apart any time soon.
Indeed it is. I was very surprised to see just how complicated it was. Still a great little pistol.
I've really been wanting to polish my trigger bar and perform a detailed cleaning. Your video is just spot on man. I'm really nervous about it though. This is actually my 3rd time watching this and I'll probably end up watching it again as soon as my takedown lever/pin comes in the mail. Great video bro!
Glad you enjoyed the video. I completely understand being careful because it is not an easy task.
I got it apart. IM waiting on the piece now. Your vid helped. good job.
Not as bad as I thought. Just got done thanks for your help.
Glad I could help.
Great Video! Thank you so much for making it!
My pleasure. Thank you for watching
Outstanding video. ..
Thanks for the video. It was great to see the SR 22 disassembled like that. Now I won't be letting my curiosity get me into trouble taking mine apart. I'll leave the total disassembly to an expert. Too many parts & springs that all seem to want to go flying away for me to risk this job.
My pleasure and I completely understand.
This is a Bench Block. Mine is made by Wheeler. When you search for one, search for Wheeler Universal Bench Block. Many places sell them. They are usually $19 - $25 depending on where you go to buy.
Great video. Hope you can put it back together.
haha. got it all together in a reassembly video.
Fortunately, I don’t have to take all that stuff apart just to switch the barrel😊 thank you very helpful
My pleasure. Yes, this was for more major cleaning or repairs. Not necessary for normal use/care.
Thank so much for the great video.
My pleasure
Dude, you rock. Well done.
Thank you very much
Taking apart, maybe a piece of cake. Putting it back together, way over my pay grade. I think I will clean my pistol in the 4 break down complete components.
Absolutely. I made this to help those that "needed" to get in that deep.
What a Nightmare. Thanks for making video, greatly appreciated.
My pleasure.
Thank you so much. I just replaced the hammer and firing pin on mine after thousands and thousands of rounds.
My pleasure. I am glad the videos continue to help.
Holy crap! I can do 1911's and Glock's detail strip but this thing is crazy!
Thank you for watching. I agree. Even on a revolver side Rugers are a bit complicated.
it is easy to use small plastic craft bags to label and store the individual parts and springs as "groups", then no issue of confusion.
Agreed.
Good video! Thank you very much Sir!
Thank you
01/01/2019..Hi all...I recently had a issue with my sr22 ...the screw that holds down the rear sight came loose and i lost it while shooting ..local gun shop had a screw and spring that fit. (ruger parts) The screw was NOT the correct screw but worked, it was too long ...when screwed in ..it physically ,mechanically locked the firing pin from operating. I learned this the hard way after trying to shoot the firearm and it would not fire ! The sight elevation screw hole is NOT a blind hole..it is drilled and threaded straight thru slide and you can bottom out the screw against the firing pin. Correct parts# for screw VS08010..spring # AX05906
Good to know. Thanks for sharing. I can see myself doing the same thing.
Great video, so if I'm understanding this right... all you have to do to disable the magazine disconnect is to remove the magazine disconnect assembly and that's it?
While I cannot advocate magazine safety removal, and legally it shouldn't be done, yes, it seems removing the magazine disconnect and it's spring would disable the magazine disconnect safety.
Thanks for sharing man Always find your videos very thorough and helpful Subbed long ago. I did punch this video up seeking rear sight removal I do believe looks pretty straightforward taking out the top Windage adjustment screw I assume everything comes off with that and then using a sight pusher taking off the dovetail claw area going with a Galloway RMR plate and mini red dot.🇺🇸🍻🤜🏻
Yes, removing the sight should not be a problem.
I noticed that you were considering taking the AGI course on gunsmithing. I have and it was very complete.I think that you will find it very detailed, well put together. If you have any questions about AGI,let me know.I have been working with AGI for over six years (taking courses)and have been more than satisfied.I think you will find their program very complete. Have a great day.......Rick
Thank you Rick. I figured I would wait until I have a shop so I can really apply the things I am learning to projects.
very good vid. ... looks like ruger copied walthers p22.. both great pistols. thanks for sharing.
My pleasure.
great video thank you for the info one question though do you have to go through that entire disassembly of the trigger area component to change the barrel
No. I have a set of 'bits' for my electric screwdriver. Included is a 5/32 inch hex head bit. I used a 1/4 inch wrench to turn the hex head bit. Only took a few cranks to remove, then replace the barrel.
I just purchased the SR22 to practice my DA instead of buying a .22LR revolver. All of my .22LR pistols are target pistols and don't have a hammer. I find the DA/SA on SR22 is exceptional and a excellent value priced .22LR pistol. I was considering the Walther P22 1st gen but was turned off by the negative reviews, the 2nd gen P22 produced to correct the deficiencies that gen 1 exhibited namely FTF and FTE. The SR22 looks quite like the P22.
Yes, it was a really good 22lr pistol. And as for ammo, CCI 40 grain performed 100% reliably in it.
thanks allot brotha
My pleasure
Cool
Is the "firing pin safety" the magazine disconnect safety?
You are brave.
Thank you.
Another great video. I’m curious, are doing this while working around a camera? If so wouldn’t it be a lot easier to just reposition the camera. You do such a terrific job doing this,I would think working with out a camera in the way would be so much easier. I’m a gunsmith and I learn so much from your videos. Thank you for that. I always look forward to seeing what your going to do next. Have a great day........Rick
Thank you. I figured that I would want to show the video from the angle of someone who will be doing this. It is a pain to work around the camera, but I think it is worth it.
Thanks for the video. I’ve been trying to find info on the back sight. Mine was off to the right, way off, when I got it. Got it centered and put screw and spring back, but seems to sit higher on the right. Gonna take a look and see if the spring is in right. Why did you remove the pin before moving the sight, and what was the spring under it?
The only reason I removed the cross pin is just because it was there. The spring under the rear sight is for the striker safety if I remember correctly.
You should do the walther p22. And tell me what ya think may be done to it as far as it's unreliable function. For me the company says to use hi velocity ammo. Yet it doesn't change the fact that it's function still stinks. Where as my sig, ruger and s&w run through anything i put in them.
This pistol was also having issues with subsonic ammo. And even some brands of 40 grain standard ammo. CCI is the brand that worked 100% reliably. We used 40 grain standard velocity.
Nice!
Thanks
With both the top and bottom followers in the right way the spring will be right, something is prohibiting the pin from engaging the bottom plate in the longer version.
Oh I see. I have no experience with those.
Garth Elliott have you figured out the reason for the failure. curious i have some parts laying around. Same issue. I thought something has to be incorrectly placed but it seems to be correct?
HI: thank you any way for your quick response, I am looking for this subject for long time now, I put ~ 2.5k-3k rounds through M&P 22 and I think it needs detailed cleaning.
I completely understand, and wish I could help. After that many rounds I would also want to detail strip and clean. Good luck and once again, sorry.
Nice job on naming the size of tools and entire video.
Thank you.
If you take the magazine disconnect and spring , will they still function? What is the draw back?
+cmichael2005 The draw back is that you deactivate one of the safeties. That should be the only effect of removing the plunger and spring. Technically, the pistol should function without them as if they were never there, but again, you lose one of the safeties.
IS IT OK IF I ASK YOU TO DETAIL STRIP S&W M&P 22 (22lr)? SO FAR YOU ARE THE BEST PERSON IN THIS FIELD I COULD FIND ON CZcams, I ENJOYED YOUR GREAT WORK VERY MUCH, THANK YOU IN ADVANCE.
Hi, I would have gladly done this, but I don't have the pistol you are referring to. Sorry.
fun fact: the guide rail happens to be exactly the same size as your floor plate hole. convenient if something happens to your magazine on the range and you dont have any tools.
Very good tip. Thank you for sharing.
I wouldn't be able to put that back together in a million years.
:)
It can be done, but will cost you a few liters of sweat and tears, and a lighter hair color.
Label everything. That's what I did and I'm not very mechanically minded. YOU CAN DO IT!
It looks like the magazine disconnect is necessary to have for the trigger bar to function properly.
I don't believe so. The trigger bar functions correctly without the disconnect. The disconnect simply pushes the trigger bar down and disengages it. If you push up on the disconnect with anything (small punch, etc.) the trigger bar will immediately engage and work as it should if there was no disconnect. There is a plunger there pushing it up into engagement if I remember correctly. The disconnect simply applies enough downward pressure to disengage the bar.
Hello
The rear sight is on a dovetail only or the screw keep it tight too ? I would like to slightly move mine cause it seems a little of center... thx
This sight is adjustable for windage i believe. There should be a screw slot on the right side of the rear sight blade if I remember correctly. The screw that sits vertically is the elevation screw. You don't need to move the sight base, just that sight blade using a screw on the side. But if the base is not perfectly in the center and you want to nudge it over to center just drift the sight base back to center.
MosinVirus thx 😉
what does the firing safety spring do? mine is missing. never had a problem with it gone. what does it mechanically do?
If I remember correctly the safety spring pushes the safety block into the way of the firing pin.
Does the pin have to be removed to take the rear sight off if changing!
It has been a while since I owned this pistol but I believe there was something that was under the rear sight. I just can't remember if that something had to come out to change the sight, or if the sight had to be removed to take that something out.
Trying to replace the bottom plates of my two sr22clips with the longer ones that came with the gun. The little plastic pin that engages the plate from the bottom will not engage and lock the plate into place, any ideas?
Garth Elliott make sure the spring is properly positioned.
Give the bottom plate an extra push in the direction you slide it on, you'll hear it click. I had the same problem.
MosinVIrus where can I get a bencg block like the blue one in this video... Great video BTW.
It is a wheeler bench block. You can get it at Midway USA.
@@MosinVirus Got it coming in the mail.. thanks for the video and product reference...
Do you recommend leaving out the magazine disconnect?
I don't like them at all and took the one out of my Sr9 c.
@@Billbobaker for legal reasons I would not recommend removing "safeties", but on a personal level I do believe it is safer to have fewer things that can prevent the gun from working, for example if the magazine is accidentally released in a bad situation...
@@MosinVirus My thoughts as well. however on the SR9c it was a nuisance and a false safety... One should always check the chamber to be sure.
Mine is missing the cap head screw that holds the barrel...could you tell me the specs of that screw? length, diameter, thread, cap size...
+Russell McCune Sorry, I don't have the pistol anymore. Have you tried contacting Ruger?
It's so easy a caveman can do it ... but if he did it probably would not ever operate again. This reminds me of the time I took my wrist watch apart and had to take it to a jeweler for reassemble. I didn't realize the jeweler was just a new watch salesman.
Lol. Obviously this one is not a Glock.
So im gonna ask you. What 22LR would you buy?
And for ammo, I have never had problems with CCI 40 grain.
You didn't remove the magazine release from the frame ?
I believe I did at 15:48 of the video. Unless you mean something else.
Can you remove the magazine disconnect safety
Yes, some people do.
Absolutely inconsiderate of me. Apologies. Yes as many have stated great video and the fact you reply is of great assistance. I'm still looking for help with a walther p22. If you know of a vid on it please let me know
Are you looking for disassembly video or something that talks about improving reliability. The only issues we have experienced with .22lr firearms were relate to them getting super dirty or when using lower quality/power ammo. Basically the gun would not always cycle.
MosinVirus yes i am aware of reliability and a dirty firearm. The p22 however is of no greater use with a thorough cleaning and wet runnning. Also i have just found the schematics for it so i should be good. I've had it a few yrs i just haven't got serious about fixing it until recently.
Ten minutes after i sent you the message i did find a couple of fixes on another channel. One being a gunsmith. So feeling good as i feel my problem is the same as that video. So yes i should be good and i will keep your sr22 video as it will be helpful im sure the lady also has it as well. Thank you for the reply
Forrest Sullivan sure thing. I just wasn't sure which reliability issues you were experiencing.
MosinVirus name one. Stovepipe, ftf or fte. Need to check my history i could tell ya who the gentlemen is that i found to help but i think i have it. Thanks again the sr22 will be good for just in case. Because I've had no issues with it yet and it eats any ammo i throw at it
Forrest Sullivan was that the hammer mod?
Glock ...34 pieces.
Ruger SR22...3,400 pieces.
Lol, yeah, definitely feels that way.
Una pregunta se distribuyen entas pistolas en centroamerica?
No sé si están disponibles en América Central
@@MosinVirus embestige. Aber si ayo una .
I lost the sight elevation screw(800685).
Sorry, you can contact Ruger for a replacement part.
Do they make a red dot for this gun
None that I know of.
How many total springs in the gun?
many.
Ok this is a nightmare. Where is my Glock.
This little shyt has a lot of parts‼️
Where is the reassembling video ?
If I remember correctly I put the link in the description of this video.
I would not disassemble the magazine because. the spring can get jammed up plus you don't have to take the barrel off
I am in no way recommending that everyone do this.
@@MosinVirus I know I like your Channel I was just helping explain that some people that own. This type of gun they just take the whole thing apart when they don't have to
@@rayjohnson4184 Understood.
Sheesh the SR 22 is just as crazy as the earlier semi-auto MK Ruger's worse even.
Yeah, I would agree.
So a person can just leave out the Mag Safety portion on re assembly.
Yes, that is what some people do.
Too bad it is not easy to disable the magazine safety.
Yes, you would have to get to it. It is easy to disable, once the gun is apart.
What would I have to do once the gun is apart?
Take out the part and spring i show at 22:29 of the video. The trigger bar is supposed to be pushed up toward the hammer. That is why you saw a long spring and plunger at the rear of the receiver block when I took it out of the polymer frame shell. The magazine disconnect and its spring, push the trigger bar down when the magazine is not inserted. When the magazine is inserted, the magazine holds the Magazine Disconnect part up and off the trigger bar. When you remove the part shown at the time above (22:29), the part that pushes the trigger bar down (thereby disconnecting it from hammer/sear) is gone and the gun will function as designed without the magazine disconnect safety.
And what do i do if tye damn spring caught stick by the kicking mechanism
Sorry, I am not sure what you are asking
@@MosinVirus the spring from the push rod fell off inside the gun now i cant get slide off gun
@@joereidoutdoorsman.3136 if you are talking about the recoil spring and guide rod, then I am not sure what fell off and why the slide can't be taken off the frame.
@@MosinVirus the recoil spring fell off the guide rod inside the slide somehow the guide rod plastic is not in the gum spring is all twisted up therefore i cant slide the slide all the way back its all jacked up
@@joereidoutdoorsman.3136 try to use some kind of small diameter rod from the front hole in the slide where the guide rod usually is to straighten and align the recoil spring. Then you should be able to take the slide off.
Hiding some fingerprints?
Making sure the camera doesn't dim the screen when my pale hands are in view.
I would just take it to a gunsmith and have the sights changed on it if I wanted them changed I know this is a complete this disassembly but come on just take it to a gunsmith and have them do it
Sure, that is an option. One smith said he used my video to take it apart.
Omg
As in, complicated?
What a nightmare
Yes, it is a bit complicated.
No way I will attempt that
Usually, there is no need.
If anything breaks, I buy a new one! Actually, I'll buy a Glock.
Glocks are good.
And after you've done a complete disassembly, toss it in the trash.
LOL
Not sure why...
He's able to assemble it back just as he took it apart. What's your point? Ruger sr22 is a good gun!
