I was a freshman in high school, and I was watching this game live when Cosell made the comment. He was referring to Garrett's size, athleticism, and quickness, not comparing Blacks to monkeys. I was shocked when he was fired. After seeing years of interaction between Cosell, Muhammad Ali, and other Black athletes, I knew the man was not a racist.

I met Howard Cosell in 1989 at a hospital in New York City. I was friends with a boy who was dying of AIDS. The boy was a minority, by the way. Mr. Cosell was there to visit his grandson. When he heard my friend had AIDS, I was concerned that he would be upset that his grandson was in the very next room. Back then, there was a lot of fear concerning AIDS. Instead, Mr. Cosell got on his knees and hugged my friend, rocking him, with tears streaming down his face. It was one of the most beautiful gestures of love I have ever seen. Since then, I shrugged off any negative thing I heard about him because I believe I got a glimpse into his heart.

What do you have against football? Madden knew a more than Cosell, but not that much more.
Some of Madden's remarks just showed that the game had passed him by--he didn't recognize defenses or players' roles in them. He lauded Washington OG Russ Grim and blasted Randy White on a first down run play resulting in a 2-yard gain, apparently not understanding that White's role in the Flex was to occupy the cutback lane (which is exactly what White was doing) and holding a run to 2 years on first down is a 'win' for the D. Madden also openly wondered "what the heck is Mike Golic doing?" on an interception of Troy Aikman, not apparently recognizing that the Eagles were playing a zone blitz, and Golic had dropped back from his DT tackle spot into the short zone. HE WAS DOING EXACTLY WHAT THE DEFENSE CALLED FOR, John.

Calling people monkeys is offensive in the eye of the beholder. Why would anyone call a human that? When this is said, one focuses on the impact not intent. One may not see it as offensive while others do. We all have opinions and perspectives to see things as we feel. No one has a right to tell anyone what is and what isn’t, especially if you’re being called an animal. If the term has been offensive to blacks at anytime in history, it’s probably offensive to them now especially if it’s meant to dehumanize. This is why protestors carrying signs “I am a man,” did so during the civil rights movement.
