The first minute and 23 seconds are from my point of view possibly one of the greatests John Williams‘ compositions ever, maybe the gratest. Sounds like the planet Krypton version of Also sprach Zarathustra, with a more tragical focus.
To convey the lost glory and heart wrenching tragedy of Krypton, without a word spoken, in a minute and 25 seconds...that is the power of music and the genius of John Williams.
There was a moment in an episode of "Smallville", when Chris Reeve made his first appearance as the scientist, that they played the beginning of this theme as he first tells Tom Welling's Clark Kent about his home planet of Krypton... Just goosebumps. I think it was the only time they used the original score in that show.
They also made a pretty cool ad for the final episode that uses this theme and goes through some Smallville clips from each season. You should check it out man!
I have goosebumps every time I hear this intro. The rise of music until 1m22 made me realize the power and goodness in Kal-El. We greatly need a person like that today.
I love John Williams. IMO one of the best composers of our generation who carries influences of Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler (IMO especially Mahler in terms of tonality, dissonance, texture, etc.) into the modern, media age. Truly a genius. The theme and orchestration through the first 2 minutes are very Strauss (Also sprach Zarathustra).
I’m so glad John Williams is alive with us right now because it’s it’s always nice to see that every now and then someone from an old movie or show is still alive.
I have always been a great fan of John Williams. His scores are purely majestical, in grand scale and the most memorable of all times. From Star Wars, to Indiana Jones to E.T., his music is surely to live on throughout the ages as is this theme to Superman.
At 1'02 : Ear Orgasm. This is the power of great music. Such solemnity and majesty. I always shed a tear when I hear that crescendo with those majestic horns. Williams is a genius and nothing can top this. This embodies Superman's ideals he brought to mankind for us strive toward and fly along to join him in the sun.
this track has power to it, encapsulates everything I love about Superman, power, hope...the best of us all. Sounds corny, during my divorce this helped me like crazy, it helped me get my life back, quit smoking, get in shape, and self actualize. Hope man, it's the damndest thing.
The measure of the brilliance of a movie soundtrack score is how well you can follow the progress of the film just by listening to the music, without seeing the film itself anywhere but in your mind. The Planet Krypton passes this test perfectly.
to the 6 people who disliked this all I can say is..... "YOU WILL BOW DOWN TO JOHN WILLIAMS AND GOOD MUSIC......I SWEAR IT!!! EVEN IF IT TAKES AN ETERNITY!!!! YOU WILL BOW DOWN BEFORE HIM!!! YOU.....AND ONE DAY YOUR HEIRS (and your asses to)
I remember going to the cinema aged 5 in 1978 to see Superman and not fully comprehending the size & the sounds of the film, It was overwhelming, RIP Marlon Brando, Christopher Reeve, & Richard Donner & thank you for the magical memories, PS John Williams will go down as the greatest composer in motion picture history..
That first 1:23min is so incredibly beautiful. I only saw the original Superman movie once, when I was a little kid (I’m 23yo now) but this song stayed with me so much so that the other day I had a dream with it! I woke up still humming the notes and stayed in bed for a little longer while trying to figure out where it was from. I’m so glad I found this song again, it quite literally lives in my dreams!
Sometimes, and in this particular case, the music for a film is far, far more affecting and powerful than the imagery it supports. Unbelievable, and always will be.
This theme perfectly captures the magical, glorious, and triumphant nature of the man of steel but also the downfall of a great civilisation. This is the definitive superman theme IMO
"The vote must be unanimous, Jor-El. It has therefore now become your decision. You alone will condemn us if you wish and you alone will be held responsible by me. Join us. You will bow down before me, Jor-El! I swear it! No matter that it takes an eternity! You will bow down before me! Both you... and then, one day, your heirs!"
This is the greatest piece of music John Williams ever gave us, and the truest theme of the real Man of Steel, Christopher Reeve. The first minute and a half of this piece represents everything that Superman is... epic, sometimes lost, but always full of hope.
I play in a number of bands here in OKC! In my Hard Rock cover band, I suggested we use the 1:23 intro off this MASTERPIECE to open the show!!! The whole crew loved it!!! BTW, opening song was Unsung by Helmet!!! Went over PERFECT! I love John Williams!
To me this could almost be the theme for Superman, it's so grand and majestic. You can see he hovering in the sun light angelic, powerful, hope, truth and justice
I remember in 1978 when I was 9 asking my neighbors Dad to please take me with when their family went to see Superman. They did and it was awesome on the screen!
I thought it was pretty awesome when they used the first minute & a half of this track for the tv promo for the second half of Season 10 of 'Smallville'. Perfect choice!
The composer Richard Strauss composed a tone poem called "Also Sprach Zarathustra" (Thus Spake Zarathustra) based on the philosophical 'novel' of the same name by Friedrich Nietzsche; the main theme of this is used as the iconic opening music in "2001". In this work Nietzsche proposed the eventual/inevitable arrival of the "übermensch" or "Superman". Strauss tried to capture this musically; Williams echoes the timpany and rising series of chords that comes at the climax of the Strauss piece.
Danny Elfman in a recent Justice League interview. And I quote: "I instated a moment of the Wonder Woman theme that Hans Zimmer did for Batman Vs. Superman, but I also had two minutes where I had the pleasure of saying, “Let’s do John Williams’ Superman.” " If I fucking hear this when Superman returns in Justice League, I am going to fucking cry. That isn't a hyperbole. I'm going to burst into tears of pure emotion.

whenever I think that humankind has hit the skids, I think "well, we still aspire to greatness." Superman isn't cool because he's powerful; he's cool because his first thought (and ours) is: "how can I help others?" Something to ponder.
I still feel this was the best Krypton, because the technology looked indistinguishable from nature, and that should be the sign of the most advanced civilizations.
The beginning sounds like Hans Zimmer's Man of Steel soundtrack. I think Zimmer gave tribute to Williams score, but you have to have a musical ear to catch it! :D
I just wanted to chime in on two things. One being the score that is used for The Man of Steel, and unfortunately, they will not be using Williams' originals, and two, I LOVE how the University of Georgia's Redcoat Marching Band plays the intro to Krypton at the beginning of every forth quarter. Dude. Great comment. I would not be able to argue with you at all on this.
It certainly is biblical in its feel...which was indeed the point, like ascending Mt. Olympus to discover some universal truth.
U took the words outta my mouth. I replay the first part over and over
You know this is a reworking of Pines of Rome's fourth movement right?
