Cool fact: the director was buddies with the composer, and told him the general plot / essence of the scenes so that he could tailor the sound *exactly* to the vision of the director. The result is a soundtrack that is still considered a masterpiece in 2020 😦
What a great and especially lasting classic, one of the best soundtracks of all time, always great to rehear it. Especially in a wise mod for Medieval II, Bellum Crucis, that has it (in battle, sieges with it are just a marvelous experience) and highlighted it at that. Very wise. Fitting perfectly with such a film and poster too. Big fantasy movies, brutes and all that jazz most of the times are bad (even Arnold), but Conan, Arnold, the film etc are just a great work and deserved classic. Thanks to the all-time work of the famous Basil too.
@@ikik1648 and nowadays they use filler songs from other movies, and then recreate similar sounds .... hence why so many movies sound like the same soundtrack lol
Conan: "Crom, I have never prayed to you before. I have no tongue for it. No one, not even you, will remember if we were good men or bad.Why we fought, or why we died. All that matters is that two stood against many. That's what's important! Valor pleases you, Crom... so grant me one request. Grant me revenge! And if you do not listen, then the HELL with you!"
Cuz at the scene where he is getting tortured, and they have an exchange about the Riddle of Steel, it completely ruined the direction of the movie. Lots of distracting pieces of dialogue like that ruined the movie. It started off confusing as well, with his father teaching him philosophy, but then it became a revenge story??? I never understood why they took it that direction.
It looks like they are bringing up the Terminator again in 2019. www.imdb.com/title/tt6450804/ Makes me wonder if Conan the Barbarian will get a reboot if they start touching on movies Arnold Schwarzenegger did.
Probably wasn't supposed to watch this film as a kid but it really is a great film and I truly do love it. Opened a whole world of fantasy and mythology for my young mind.
IMHO, the (whole) Conan soundtrack is the BEST epic orchestral symphony written from the times of Karl Orff (& his Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi) - and Basil Poledouris stays immortal through this masterpiece. O:-)
I remember when I was 13, I wrote a screenplay for an Alien invasion movie and I had a scene written to where the main human characters and a few of the alien characters that were the good guys prepare for a battle against the alien empire that invaded the small town where we were filming. I came across this and I thought this would do very well. But we couldn't film it cause it was kind of impossible to do it the way we would, so we left the battle sequence out of the final cut of the film we made. But the way homemade filmmaking is now this days, it could be done in an HD way. Plus different shots would have to be digitally mixed with a few others.
For those complaining about the weird placement of the track Riders of Doom, it's supposed to be the theme of Tulsa Doom's Army and when you first hear that you feel a sense of dread, or at least are supposed to, you knew how it was going to go, people were going to die and they were going to die in very bloody ways. With the first time it's heard in the film it uses only the more dread filled elements, which makes sense because for Conan this would be terrifying and slightly traumatic as this raid not only kills his village but ends with his father eaten by dogs and his mother decapitated after she had wavered in Tulsa Doom's presence. The second time this is heard, this track has more triumphant elements to fit the fact that it's a big bloody fight only this time the casualties will be solely Doom's forces. In both cases people die and it maintains it's status as an excellent track.
I disagree. The first time you hear this track, the circle begins. The last time you hear it, the circle completes itself. Everyone Conan loves is killed in font of him and his life, his purpose begins. At the end, his purpose is finally clear and he kills everyone Thulsa Doom ever cared about thus balancing the equation. This music is about the glorious subjectivity of the righteous use of violence. The first time it underscores a genocide perpetrated by those who believed themselves to be justified, the second, it equally powerfully underscores what's perceived as justice and divine retribution through the eyes of the viewer as Conan's proxy. To me it speaks volumes about the inseparable link between human existence and violence and how the subjective nature of self-righteousness threatens to turn us all into someone else's nemesis lest we forget to consider our actions and their consequences.
Right. But I'd rather be the Valkyrie they summon, at their most desperate moment. Who ensures victory by cleaving entire enemy battalions in 2, with one swing/thrust of my Lightning Spear. Finally rallying my troops with the phrase "C'mon, you fuckin' Humps!! You wanna live forever?!" And when they start winning, I disappear to watch the show from the hilltop, with my sisters.
Each warm up, Basil has reminds me. Though, the bones of a champion grows stiff, there is no need to go quietly into that dark night. Fill your hands, draw your swords. Every foe shall be given steel. To live was to die, anyway.
Every now & then the Sydney Symphony (SSO) & the Sydney Philharmonic Choir will play/sing the score to a movie while the movie itself plays on the big screen, in particular they did this for the Lord of the Rings movies. I wish they'd do the same for Conan the Barbarian!!!! I keep getting asked by the SSO to renew my subscription & I keep telling them, put a Basil Poledouris event on, in particular Conan the Barbarian & I'll renew my subscription.
