    You can make just about anything _sharp,_ but making a high quality knife means that it will *stay sharp* while you use it.
    We have very high quality mono-steels these days, but Damascus is a demonstration of skill and craftsmanship.
    Beautiful work, I'd be proud to make something half as good.

      Yeah, all you really need is a belt grinder, some way to heat treat, and a slab of good steal. Still very much doubt it would be sharper than my Hitachi Shirogami kitchen knives, those are thin and hard, 8k+ whetstones actually make a difference. Though for a lot of food items having a rougher 4k grit gives a better bite when starting the cut.
      Now, a nice damascus scribing knife would be nice to have.

      @@badatheist9948 Stop being pedantic, language changes. Everyone calls pattern welded "Damascus". Crucible steel is generally known as "Wootz" nowadays, and while there are a number of alternative methods to produce such steel, the process has been fairly well empirically worked out.

      It is a shame that this is not damascus steel, a high quality knife or sharp.
      While I appreciate that the gentleman is undoubtedly a skilled metal worker, the blade design is terrible.

      It's a Flux to help in the welding of the steal by keeping it clean and keeping out oxygen that can cause inclusions and cold shuts.

      It's like Flux it helps to stop oxygen from getting in and causing inclusions and what is know as cold shuts. It helps to keep the steal clean and make a good weld when forging.

    Well it's not " real Damascus Steel" as Damascus Steel is actually a crucible steel. It's pattern welding. Very hard work and sometimes tricky to get right so quite a laudable achievement nonetheless.

      Don't confuse Wootz with Damascus. Wootz is the crucible steel which when folded, makes Damascus . 👍

    Technical that is pattern forging. Damascus or wootz steel is made in a sealed retort with carbon (charcoal).

      I have this discussion all the time
      folded metals are laminated
      Damascus is iron folded over 14 times so the carbon from the hammer blows migrate into the iron to form steel , how steel was discovered first

Gracias, soy nuevo en este tema, hace poco tengo tiempo libre y comencé a hacer cuchillos y otras armas, y bueno hacer un cuchillo de un acero 1060 0 1090 es relativamente fácil, pero ahora he querido soldar piezas, hacer dobleces, aumentar densidades y me ha costado, he tenido burbujas, no solda bien, en fin, Ai poco a poco, tengo tiempo. Me llamo la atención como endureció el metal, aunque creo que no fue así, también ví laminaciones, en fin no todo es verdad en los vídeos. Pero gracias por la información, voy a usar bórax para soldar diferentes tipos de acero y para hacer doble es a ver cómo me va.

      Actually there are many ways to make patterned steel, all valid. "Real" damascus is made from wootz steel, if you want to get really precise.

    Плохо, когда вырезают из пластины. Вы всего лишь сварили кузнечной сваркой пакет. Вы не отковали режущую кромку, вы не отковали обух и само тело клинка. Внешне красивый, этот нож плох сам по себе. Хорошие кузнецы не вырезают ножи из пластины, а куют их. По сути дела - пыль в глаза. Просто зря потрачено время и огонь. Отвратительно.
    P.S. И даже бумагу нормально разрезать не смог...

      @@StanislavRedkey хоть от куда. И даже современные. Есть даже знаменитые, только не тот что на этом видео... Сварил пакет, плющинул в пластину и вырезал болгаркой. Получив барахло на выходе и в пустую потраченный материал. А людям пыль в глаза пускает, как он красиво бурой сыплет.

      ​@@VolodiaLukianov Вытягивать спуски это уже от большого дефицита, или при крайне углеродистой стали на сырье, чтобы карбиды поразбивать. Но на этом канале я видел и вывод спусков.. кузнец явно знает что это.
      В данном случае, условно, сварены однородные пруты рафинированного сырья. Можно, наверное, к этому предъявить, мол какой смысл сваривать дамаск, тем более прутованный, без разнородной стали. Но на сегодняшний день потребитель видет рисунок и ему норм. Вы ещё предложите на булаты перейти)

      @@StanislavRedkey В целом, конечно, согласиться можно. Но тогда какой интерес сваривать пакет, если сырьё однородное по процентному содержанию углерода?)) Понятно, что кузнец знает, что делает. Я бы сказал это больше похоже на элементы красивого для глаза видео, где смысл красиво сварить пакет, а не конечный продукт))
