I'm glad you mentioned criticism vs constructive criticism. A lot of folks don't know the difference. Then you have techs that try to act like they run the pharmacy and forget that the Pharmacist runs the pharmacy...

Also, POOR TRAINING is a big concern in the pharmacy area. I remember doing my externship, and one of the pharmacy technicians's training technique's was horrible. I also, had asked to let me do some hands on training with the computer so I could get more indept into learning how their computer system work. Never showed me, that was a really big disappointment. Basically, I had taken the knowledge that I had learned from school, and self trained myself. And it's one thing I said when I apply for my job, "Lord, please put me around some positive, caring, helpful, dedicated, and team working people." I feel that you can get a lot more accomplish. Because, the number one goal is taking care of the patients.

Any tips to get rid of my trauma from working with a pharmacist that had no patience with me as a pharmacy tech trainee. All I had to do was fill but I always had a problem when we needed a manufacturer change because she said check with her before doing anything. I wanted to learn new things but she just saw me as a high school student and only let me fill. I basically felt that the environment was toxic as she would yell at her other techs also and I believe one moved because I saw him at a different Wallgreens. I am certified now but am too traumatized to go and work for one.

I’m in SC and I have been considering going to school to become a Pharmacy Technician. I spoke with the Program Director at the local community college and he told me the most he ever made was $40,000 and that was after having worked for 15 years. I question the cost-benefit in changing careers to support my family only making that amount. It would be worth it making that amount starting but having to work all those years and only make that amount is disheartening. Any advice or things to consider? The program is only 2 semesters long also, so it’s a quick program, so there is that.

It’s all about budgeting. Just think if you and your wife were Pharmacy Techs, that’s $80,000 per year. And remember don’t stop at being just a pharmacy tech. You can achieve other certifications as a pharmacy tech. Me myself I’ve always worked 2 jobs🤷🏽‍♀️ Unless your prepared to go to school to get a masters or doctorate degree, I think Pharmacy Techs makes pretty decent pay. You can also tutor someone, teach family members and teach at a local college from having your certification. Be open to where it can take you.

Take a look at jobs that actually need more people: HVAC, electricians, plumbers, and brick layers. Look into getting an apprenticeship. Or look into University of the People, a school that is actually interested in helping their students succeed and providing a quality education for a low cost. If you do decide to go for pharmacy tech anyway, don't go for any of the NPTA certifications. I've known people who did their compounding certification several years ago. The course material and quizzes were online. After you finished those, you completed three days of "hand on training" in Houston. The technicians who were already trained in compounding said the only benefit they got was the "certificate" to give to their employer. The untrained technicians didn't benefit at all. Three days of rushed, hands on training is not enough to learn compounding (note: the amount of time each day was short). It's a waste of money. The program only benefits the people profiting off of the students. You have to train in the same environment you're going to work in, which is why a lot of these online programs make no sense. With mastering new skills students need plenty of practice, feedback while they learn, and support from mentors.

@@PharmacyTechLove Please don't gas-light me. There is a reason why turnover rates are so high in most retail chain pharmacies. Pharmacy techs are overworked and underpaid. and most pharmacies are under-staffed which means pharmacy staff have to do the work of multiple people which leads to burn-out.
It could be a good job, if most retail pharmacies didn't put profit over patient safety and worker's rights but that's capitalism for you.
