This frustrates me.. I’m a new Pharmacy Technician (loving a lot of the job!), and my company would NEVER not verify anything. You have to! Not only for safety, but if you gave a, for example, Victoria Secret’s medication to a different Victoria, and the information, that’s a big HIPPA violation.. There’s no way the company you worked for will stay afloat for long. Not unless they changed a lot of their protocols.

One thing that I’ve learned is that you can’t stay stagnant. if one job doesn’t pay you the amount that you want to be paid, start applying for other jobs. I just started as a Pharmacy Tech Trainee 9 months ago. I had a pt p/u med one day & there were not 1, not 2 but 3 ppl with the same first & last name! We ask last name to retrieve rx's then verify phone and/or/in addition to address & depending on pt DOBwhen ringing them out. Idk how long they were patients, but I took ot upon myself to ask for a middle initial or middle name bc the ladies knew of each other (they were all around same age & went to school together from what I was told). We typically do 200-250 rx's a day. In the fall & winter we do 300-400/daily, sometimes more. We are a small town with around 3,000ppl living in it. Typically we only having 1 tech overlap, having 2 techs, from 12-5. And 1 Pharmacist working (only 2 Pharmacists are employed & alter days). I've come to recognize patients when they come in, I still verify info though. There are still 2 pts that I know of (cant remember bame, but remember Pharmacist pointing it out) with the same 1st & last name that I need to change. When we are busy & there's only 1 tech working, it's easier to grab a rx by looking through names than try & open leaflet & verify other info bc when you bring say more than what they are picking up bc you don't know which 1 they are & they see the extra, they want to know what it is for. Having a BA in Criminal Justice, I am always worried about the whole HIPPA thing bc of the ramifications that could/would happen so I always try my best to be on top of everything & if I don't recognize a pt as a "regular" & cant understand them, I will verify DOB then name before retrieving script. I go a little more overboard than my fellow techs I work with, but it's my job that's on the line if I don't make sure I cross all the bases.

My Pharmacy (large chain) made a huge mistake last week and gave me the wrong medication, that was ment for another person with the same exact name. It was an injectable pen (insulin). The Pharmacy Tech did not check the name, address, and phone number on all the bags. I was prescribed steriods, so honestly for a minute I thought I had been prescribed injectable steriods. I don't know medicine, so I had no idea if that was typicial. My husband who works in the medical field, looked into the medication on his phone and discovered it was insulin. The pharmacy refunded us. But I feel like that is a big mix-up. If no one had realized it was insulin and I had just followed the Pharmacy's instructions, I could very well be dead. Giving insulin or other diabetes medications to someone without diabetes can be deadly. How does a computer system not have a safeguard to warn a tech that they have rung up medications for one name with 2 different address and 2 different birthdates? What if the diabetes medication had been a pill form like Metformin, that's less noticeable?

I completely understand what you are saying. no disrespect against Walgreens but its the people that train you. always listen to your ppl/ manager. The reason being is theses people are used to working (THIER WAY) and that's not the right way. I can say tho, people tend to ring people up with not charging bags and give them a bag. I charge the customer a bag because if HR wants to go on the cam and see if i charged the customer for a bag and I didn't I'm the only one to blame. So when people tell me do it this way and do not tell manager i just say ok but , i don't listen to them, I follow the Walgreens policy. It sucks and I'm sorry you went through this. You should complain to HR Corporate and tell them your situation. You seemed that you did great at your job, best wishes to you girl

I might had a relationship built with them. But just like the wrist bands on them I still need for them to verify who they are. that covers me if someone else makes a mistake. and its part of the 7 rules of administering medication!!

I would turn in my resignation if I were a Pharmacy Tech, if I were a tech the hard work I put in would not be risked at an employer that did not value patient safety. I would not put a patient's life at risk, by not doing what I would know to be thr right thing. I would not put my freedom at risk by being negligent and risking negligent homicide charges for a patient's death. On Friday a tech gave me an injectable pen that was insulin because they did not check the address, phone number, and birthdate on all the bags. Had my husband who is in the medical field not noticed I could be dead.
