  • Do nurses really need to know dosage calculations (nursing math) for the job? Why do nursing students even learn dosage calculations in nursing school?
    In this video, Nurse Sarah explains why nurses need to know how to calculate dosages on the job.
    Dosage calculations can be intimidating to many nursing students, especially if you dislike math or struggle with math problems.

    This is so true I’m a new grade, and I can confirm that you will use dosage cal. My new job had an exam that you had to receive a 95% to proceed through the interview process. I even had to do calculations just last week to ensure the proper administration of IVIG which has to be programmed manually; pharmacy only provided the starting rate, the weight and policy admin instructions. Dosage cal is a great way to ensure that what it’s says and what you’re giving is accurate.

    Thank you, Sarah... as some out in the field as a specialty visiting nurse, we do use dosage calculation on a regular basis. It might be a family member asking what 0.25 ml of Lorazepam intensol at 2 mg/ml means for an equivalent pill form or writing a recommendation to a provider.

    I am new to canada and i decided to study nursing .i have an academic background in engineering. Dosage calculations part of nursing is very easy for me. However,i failed from my first clinical because of not respecting client's confidentiality. I put the client's last name on a pathology card. Canada needs practical minds ,unfortunately i am not very good at visual and fast learning.

    I’ve used it a couple times when the hospital goes cheap and they’re mixing their stuff in-house and suddenly the concentration numbers are not the same they used to be in the older bags.

    Dear Nurse Sarah. This might not be related to this video, but have a question about the accelerated RN to MSN program. Is it worth skipping the BSN program ? Also, is it necessary to get the BSN first before getting an RN degree? Thank you

    • @casenace6091
      @casenace6091 Před 2 lety +10

      You don't need a Bachelor's to be a Registered Nurse. I'm an RN with an Associate's Degree. What makes you an RN is passing the NLCEX, which earns you your nursing license. Every RN to MSN program gives you your BSN in the process of earning your MSN. You're earning both at the same time. It's accelerated.

    • @Livontheg0
      @Livontheg0 Před 2 lety +3

      @@casenace6091 just to add onto this - my direct entry MSN did not grant a BSN on the way. If you are considering direct entry, please ask this question directly and ensure you know the answer before choosing the program. Best of luck!

    The doctor should simplify the dosage as easy as possible. Nurses these days and future very busy and potential to make mistakes which could cost lives. Doctors on big bucks should do that extra step. They are so called academics. So it's easy for them.
