  • The original Zelda for NES. I've never beaten it. Gonna try to beat it. That's pretty much it.
And yes, this is recorded on VHS. I know for those who are obsessed with super HD 4K quality this is less than ideal. Personally, I really appreciate the soft and nostalgic quality that the analog format brings. Also I'm a giant hipster :)

This channel feels like it's straight out of 2012 and I love it

oh crap not to be that person but this aesthetic is amazing, like, more people need to just sit back and record themselves playing a game with no editing, and just record themselves trying to beat the game as best they can.

discovered you through your quite viral minecraft world update but i'm loving your other content. I love this style of laid back "let's play" style content, I hope it makes a wider comeback on the platform! I'm very curious to know, how did you manage to record this on VHS? i'd love to try my hand at it, soft tape hiss and screen distortion are my jam :D Keep it up man.

As much as I'm really enjoying making Minecraft stuff, it always warms my heart a little to find out some people think my analog recording videos are cool. These were really cool projects to make, though they could be frustrating too.
Recording the gameplay itself is the "easy" part; all you need is the VCR, the VHS tape, something to play the games on with an RCA output (e.g. original NES, or some thrid party console), and some sort of RCA capturing device that will allow you to transfer the VHS to your computer. I have a little Elgato RCA-to-USB device for that. That will allow you to see the game in real time on your computer, however it might be more desirable to have a little TV that accepts RCA to see the game while you record.
Now, recording my own voice onto the VHS tapes... that sucked lol. I had to buy a microphone, and a karaoke machine to combine the two audio sources (the game and my voice) into one line to plug into the VCR. But then I had problems with volume being too low, or a high pitched buzzing in the background. On top of that, sometimes the video would go crazy when transferred to my computer.
So, there were many problems, and that's a big reason I stopped doing these. But, part of me would like to revisit analog stuff, because there's just so much creative stuff you can do with it, and the extra effort you put in makes it feel cool. Anyways, thanks for the comment and good luck if you decide you want to try something like this! Hope I didn't scare you away with this wall of text LOL

there is already a comment saying what i’m saying here but finding you through a viral minecraft world update brought me to this pretty awesome channel, i find your content and commentary pretty relaxing in all the videos i’ve seen so far, and i hope to see you continue to stream and post (hopefully sometime we could see a schedule if not it’s totally cool tho)

Hi! I just wanted to say that while I absolutely love your Minecraft videos, I also love this series and I really hope you upload more VHS lets plays. They're really relaxing. Please don't give them up 🥺
Seriously. NOBODY does videos like this. This is uniquely you. If you ever give up on this concept just because your most popular videos are of minecraft, then it would be a real waste. Of course, if you just decide that you're not interested in the VHS stuff anymore then that's fine, but I don't want you to believe that just because your minecraft vids are a hit, you're obligated to become 100% a minecraft channel, cuz thats not true at all.
    Thanks for making cool content!

Thank you for this great comment. I enjoyed making these videos but they were also kind of a pain in the ass for various reasons. I will say, I’m not necessarily done with vhs stuff…

I appreciate the nostalgia of VHS. I recently beat the second quest on the GBA. I did look at the NES Game Atlas a couple of times and accidentally learned how to find secrets in the overworld.

Awesome! Honestly I didn't even know about the second quest until recently. This game really has a lot more to it than most people probably think.
