Every time Cordele gets documented they head straight for the hood and leave out the other side of town with the beautiful neighborhoods and gorgeous homes.
Last May I took the back roads from Jacksonville up through GA to Atlanta heading back to Illinois avoiding the interstate, wanted to see what I could and photo things of interest, mostly old abandoned forgotten places, like houses, old stores and long closed gas stations. I remember a cop drove by once when I was on the side of the road photographing an old gas station from the 70's probably asking me if I was OK with his deep Georgia accent and I just explained to him, that to me, this was like expensive fine art...he just smiled but a lot of these forgotten places are beautiful in their own way.
I was born and raised in Cordele, GA, livin in the Bronx now. It’s so crazy to see this especially when you drove down the street I lived. It’s been a while since I’ve been back but I do love to see this. I love my “hood”❤
My family’s home town. Our ancestors lived in north Georgia but I believe my great, great grandfather migrated south. This is where I consider myself from. It’s not that great of a place today. It was much better in the ‘90s. We walked through most of the town. Ya’ll came across a train. My favorite part. My great grandparents lived just 3 houses down from the CSX track. I’ll be down there for my cousins wedding. I wanted to live there when I was younger but the tech there is not good. No real ISP’s. You did get to the hood. The hood back in the day was on the other side of the train ya’ll came across. Now it’s probably the entire town. You should, if you didn’t get a chance to or didn’t know but downtown Cordele has a place called, The Pool Room. Food is considered good but I’ve never eaten there. I’m hoping I’ll try when we go down for the wedding.
You should really try Carter's Fried Chicken or locally known as Carter Burgers best fried Chicken in three counties. Also they have this chicken salad that is so good if you were to get some on your face your tongue would bet your brains out trying to get to it.
It's on the West side of town. Unfortunately, you probably didn't go to the West side of Cordele. 60 years ago, it was predominately African Americans residents.
I am from Cordele. It was not this bad We had bowling alleys and everything no fimatter of fact, when I left Courtyard in 73 and went to college at Clemson University and went on to be a professional, a basketball player so Cordele have produced some very good people.

@SOUTHERN LIFE Saluda and Orangeburg off the top of my head. Haven't done too much exploring. I know last time you went to Columbia you had a bad experience but I recommend checking out Irmo and Lexington. These are very nice areas along Lake Murray. I love it here. Agree that Columbia itself has lots of rough patches though.
Why you call old homes,the hood, most of Cordele have good families, why do you drive slow where the homes are old, but speeds where there Are nicer homes? Showing a little bias sir.
Be glad you took the back roads, I-75 Cordele is how they generate revenue, they sit on the bridge both directions with radar guns and chase Cars on the ramps to get you🚓🚓
