- We Spent Christmas in Poland. Our time in Poland has been so good that we decided to extent our stay in this wonderful country and stay for Christmas. We stayed at the beautiful Hotel Bania, a luxury Polish hotel located in Białka Tatrzańska, just a short drive from Zakopane. This incredible hotel was the perfect choice for us to spend christmas here in Poland. Hotel Bania offers an unbelievable relaxing experience from their amazing Hot Thermal Baths to their lovely Spa and treatments, oh and they also have Ski to door facilities. We enjoyed a traditional Polish Christmas experience with a delicious dinner along with some traditional Polish highland music. What a way to spend Christmas and experience we will never forget.

I was there. Yes, magic place. Poland is beautifull.
In Poland traditional Christmas Eve dinner should have 12 courses. Looks like the restaurant went with more reasonable number. Beetroot soup with those little dumplings (in Polish "uszka"=ears) is a classic on Polish Christmas dinner table. Also, about the tradition you talked about at the end. In Poland right before Christmas dinner people share the wafer called "opłatek" (similar to the one you receive in Holy Communion in Catholic Church) and give each other best wishes as a sign of reconciliation. This tradition is cultivated only in few other Slavic countries.
And actually beetroot soup (czerwony barszcz - red borsch) and dumplings (uszka - little ears) count as separate courses.
Same is for example when you eat fish with potatoes they are two dishes.
Ah thank you, we actually didn’t know what the wafer was for, we actually thought it looked like holy communion but we were really too sure what to do.

@@KAESowicz Yes, it is. And you cannot buy just like that it in the grocery store. Most common place to buy or receive it is your local Church.
I agree. However, as for the wafer, I would emphasize that it is not what communion is for us Catholics, although the raw material is similar. Sharing the wafer is an old Polish tradition, also present in the homes of atheists (so it's used by anyone in Poland), because it means like sharing nothing but a bread and is a beautiful occasion to make Christmas wishes, after the Christmas Eve dish. However, I would add that the obligatory dish during the Polish Christmas Eve is carp!!! :) Ofc additional compote of prunes, poppy seed cake, deliciously made cabbage with mushrooms etc., but carp above all carp! :)
1:33 These are not Christmas patterns, but only part of the highlander tradition. Most of the Podhale highlanders are people who deal with traditional sheep grazing, the tradition of cheese and wool production, highlander music, etc. of course, I am very glad that you like my homeland so much.

This interior looks pretty cosy, i went there for skiing once and it's important to notice that there is a bar on top of the ski mountain and in half of it as well if i remember.

In fact, these 12 dishes are only symbolism, in the vast majority of Polish homes less about half of them are prepared.

This was really fantastic, guys! So happy you had such a wonderful Christmas in Zakopane. I'm pretty sure another couple on CZcams (their channel is called, Babe Where is My Passport ) posted a summer video from Hotel Bania. Looks like a gorgeous place any time of the year!
And I'm happy you got a gist of Polish Christmas. Yes, Christmas Eve is when the main celebrations take place in Poland. Traditionally, 12 dishes are served on Christmas Eve. Barszcz (clear beetroot soup) and mushroom soup are traditional as well as several other dishes. No meat, and only fish is served on Christmas Eve and then ham is served on Christmas day.
I noticed people were exchanging Christmas wafers and sharing wishes with their loved ones in your video. There are many other traditions surrounding Christmas Eve/Christmas in Poland.

Our tradition is to fast on Christmas Eve Day - usually from the morning until you see the first star in the sky, when you spot a star then you have a traditional dinner with your family. We don't eat meat on that day and replace it with fish so you will see loads of different fish types on our tables. Also, at 24:00 some people go to the church for 'pasterka' and after this you're 'allowed' to have meat. Those who don't want to go to the church this late, usually have a Christmas breakfast the next morning, where they have loads of meat - traditional Polish hams, sausages etc.
We honestly have loaaaaaads of different traditions and I personally find them very interesting. I live in the UK and work for the international company and this year we had a chance to share our traditions and we had people from Australia who have bbq's for Christmas, then we had some British who like to spend the whole Christmas day at the pub and we also had someone from India who has chicken curry for Christmas!
Fasting in English has a different meaning. It does not mean: not eating meat.
