  • @connellyj823
    @connellyj823 Před 4 lety +28

    This was an amazing set, but particularly haunting. Kurt actually requested the stage decorated with lilies "like a funeral". The band's set list skipped most of their big hits in favor of their more intimate and gut wrenching songs. Most of the songs in the set address death, pain, and regret. Months later, Kurt was gone and this concert was mixed and released posthumously. So very sad.

    There's a quote by Kurt about death, after life and all of that. It goes like this: "If you die you're completely happy and your soul somewhere lives on. I'm not afraid of dying. Total peace after death. Becoming someone else is the best hope I've got." So first: it shows how miserable he actually was and also proves he somehow believed in heaven. Second: it gives Vin's opinions some credit, like he's singing this lyrics in despair cause he no longer believes he deserves going to heaven. Jesus doesn't want me for a sunbeam - sunbeams are never made like me. Sad sad shit.

    The Vaselines were a band from the West of Scotland, fronted by Eugene Kelly who Kurt was a huge fan of. Kelly grew up as s Catholic in Scotland and also battled depression. The original song is something that was sung in every Sunday School in Scotland, Catholic and Protestant. He wrote his version as a statement on depression in relation to his faith, not necessarily as an attack on religion in any way. It was more about how deep we can fall and how much it can break us.

    Good analysis Vin. The Vaselines transformed a joyful little Christian song into a sorrowful and acrimonious lament over feeling abandoned by God. And that resonated with Kurt. The melody is so warm with childlike wonder and simplicity, but with the new lyrics it suddenly sounds so bittersweet, like a funeral dirge. Nirvana's performance here gives me chills.
    Let us remember that in the Bible, Jesus himself cries out, ""My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" And coincidentally, he too was basically repeating someone else's words. Psalm 22:2 says, "O my God, I cry in the day time, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent."

      Also as you pointed out he plays a lot of covers during this unplugged with only a few originals sprinkled in. When you listen to the whole album it almost tells a story and gives you a deep understanding of his mindset at the time.

    You guys really need to hear 'So What' by Crass.
    Similar message, so would be cool to compare the two.

      Also, I really needed to hear that outro about holding on.
      You'd think I would stop being surprised that God is good all the time...But no, I'm still moved by how I was in the right place to hear you.
