    I am afraid they aren't same. Specifically this Seagate (ST4000DM004) is SMR vs WD (WD40EZRZ) is CMR. So there's a huge difference in drive longetivity. Also when it comes to data recovery, CMRs are much more reliable than SMRs. In laymen terms, data in SMR drives is written in layers, so to fetch data burried underneath, the drive will have to pull data from top layers and store it temporarily in Cache (hence SMR drives have bigger Cache than CMR drives). And while doing so the drive head has to go through a lot of wear and tear which eats up the head life. Moreover, recovering data from damaged SMR drive is more complex and less reliable. Whereas, in CMR drives data is not overwritten so it does not need to dig deeper to fetch data (hence smaller Cache). Less wear and tear on head and data recovery is easy and more chances of recovering data. Hope this helps.

      Yeah, honestly, in terms of pricing. They flip flop back and forth during sales where one is always cheaper than the other. In terms of performance, in the long run, it’s not going to make a difference to an average user. If people were looking for performance, I would suggest a SSD.

      @DEEJMASTER 333 I must be doing something wrong then. WD Blue 2TB have clicking noise after only 2 months! I didnt even use PC everyday, only like 20 - 40 hours a week. I had some sector probably failed since I found out some data are missing and it had my bios fixing the drive every so often now. Im sure that was a clicking of death, the sound of the Head scraping my disk.

      @@VysairGlad i just bought the Barracuda then. But im truly crossing my fingers.. 😂 i was about to buy their Seagate Exos 7E8 as its said to last over 18 months on server tests. But server drives are NOISY. So i opted between the Blue & Barracuda. Luckely im just gona use it as a game drive for my PS4 Pro, so if it crashes games can just be redownloaded on any of my old 2.5 inch external drives. Just wanted to get an 8GB drive to max out the console, also because Playstation is only allowed to use 1 USB drive at a time which is quite annoying... Anyhoot: so bought a 3.5 inch Deltaco chassis to run the upcoming Barracuda 8GB drive as external drive. @proudamerican774 Před 4 lety +27

    I would choose the WD drive because it uses the older CMR tech while the Seagate uses the newer cost cutting SMR (Shingled magnetic recording
    ). In SMR, data are sequentially written to shingled tracks just as the roof of a house is shingled. Therefore, SMR does not have the random-access performance of CMR. In the real world if you're running an OS the WD drive will perform better but just for storage the Seagate might seem better at first due to the higher cache memory but will perform much worst while the WD drive has a more predictable and reliable performance. Don't fall for the extra cache memory Seagate is offering. Hope this helps.

    The Seagate here is an SMR (Shingled Magnetic Recording) drive while the WD is a CMR,/PMR (Conventional or Perpendicular Magnetic Recording) drive. I'm surprised that the Seagate here turned in those numbers because SMR drives are notorious for being very slow when writing due to the nature of shingling magnetic tracks, but I guess that applies to rewriting data. The first write could be fast enough. Are these drives still with you and are you still using them? Some say SMR drives perform well initially but as data accumulates and gets fragmented it becomes very slow.

      @shinkimo Před 4 lety

      Either. Doesn't matter. Better to look at pro models or enterprise if you really want more reliability. CMR over SMR. Make backups of important files - ALL drives can fail.

    • @TheWongReviewer
      @TheWongReviewer  Před 4 lety

      @@shinkimo Thanks again for the comment. I have read a few articles that state you shouldn't use an enterprise drive in a desktop build and to only use them in NAS setup. Do you have any thoughts or experience on this?

    • @shinkimo
      @shinkimo Před 4 lety

      @@TheWongReviewer the main reason they state this, is because CRC (cyclic redundancy check). NAS and enterprise drives are set to check some errors they detect for a short time, then go to the raided disk to check again - if not found, it's labeled as a bad sector more quickly. Regular drives will do this check for a long time and I found they can even lock up or scratch the platter. So although they can help to recover something better, I'm not sure it's really worth it. Technology today is much better than it used to be, so there isn't as much chance of errors on drives as in the past. That being said, I'm ok with my drive labeling a bad sector and using the the next good sector over, without rewriting over a bad one (a good reason why CMR drives are better than SMR). In any case, it's why I think backups are good practice. Just about everyone is using Dropbox, google drive, etc now - everyone can redownload movie files, pr0n, etc if they need to 😂🤭.

    If I knew modern HDD's were this fast I wouldn't have gotten an SSD. What type of drive were you transferring the data from? Also 25% of the file transfer was at almost 600 MB/s! is that even possible? Loading data on my new MX500 from old hdd was 50mb/s for one and 100mb/s for another. I was using a 12 year old SATA 2.0 pc.

    • @nilsfrahm1323
      @nilsfrahm1323 Před rokem

      You did right choice with SSD. Start speed is reported wrong, because windows uses free ram as disk cache. You can check in Task Manager the real speed for each drive and see write speed never above 100MB/s for hdd.
      Second, copying files to ssd from a hard drive is limited to min speed of both, which is hdd speed, like 200MB/s if hdd is old.
      You were not using ssd fully during copy.
      Third, ssds have very fast speed for small operations, like copying with 4KB requests.
      A hdd has 2MB/sec for such requests, an SSD has 70MB/s. This is huge (35x) difference, when extracting zip archives, using databases or many programs at same time that read their files, hdd will almost block for minutes, ssd will run instantly.
      The sequential speed is just small part of the picture, 4KB speed is the real deal.
