    I used to agree with you on the calipers, but then I bought my mitutoyos. Easily one of my most used tools now. Accuracy is never in question; it has been zeroed once since I bought it and it has stayed zeroed since, meaning I can open and close it countless times, and it'll still read the same at a measurement taken a bunch of times. Also, the battery life is amazing. Literally rated in years because of the tech mitutoyo put in it. When it auto shuts off, it's actually shutting off, and not just putting the screen to sleep like the cheap ones do, which still saps the battery.
    Great video. 🙂

    Awesome. I was actually on the fence about getting that kreg attachment, instead of a dedicated track saw and just never pulled the trigger on either, because like you, I built a super cheap edge guide myself and it works so much better than free handing it, I just can’t justify buying a dedicated unit.

  • @boatrightcreations
    @boatrightcreations Před 2 lety +2

    Ditto on the kreg Accu cut. I could never cut straight. My cuts were more like parabolas than lines. Now I free hand my cuts a little large and then do it right in the table saw.

  • @alwaysforward_WYO
    @alwaysforward_WYO Před 2 lety +6

    I'll agree with the Kreg tracksaw, although the Kreg Rip-Cut attachment has been accurate to about 1/32" when attached to my Milwaukee M18 Fuel 6.5" saw. I'm not saying it'll replace my Makita track saw or my cabinet saw, but for ripping sheet goods down to size it's a lot more convenient than manhandling full sheets in the cabinet saw or digging out the track saw. It's funny how Kreg can make a cheaper solution that's better than their more expensive solution to do essentially the same job!

    • @tjtobin86
      @tjtobin86 Před 2 lety

      Agree. The rip cut (though sorta clumsy in the fact that you need the attachment on your saw all the time) does make an accurate rip cut if you don't want to wrestle a full sheet on your table saw.

    Completely agree with the kreg track saw kit. It was complete garbage, and the base wouldn’t even fit on my saw! I had to ruin my nice Dewalt saw by super gluing the base on, only to realize afterwards that it was absolute dog s***. But on the other hand, I think mastercraft revised their design on those calipers, because I haven’t had an issue with them! I’ve used high end Igaging and Mitutuoyo calipers, and I’d say the mastercraft ones I bought are just as good… great video!

    Add in Kreg’s Rip Cut. Complete piece of garbage. I cut the most beautiful gentle curve by using the perfectly straight factory edge on a very expensive sheet of plywood because that worthless piece of garbage could not securely hold my circular saw no matter how tightly I turned the screws. Kreg needs to stick to pocket screws.
    Tossed the Rip Cut in the trash can and bought a Makita track saw. It is a dream to use. Worth every penny.

    Agree on these.
    I too have the Kreg track, but I fixed the slop by adding pieces of tape along the track to "tighten" it up. Works much better. But I find I hardly ever get the whole setup out anymore and instead use the track as a straight edge.

    Worth it putting a bit more upfront into a decent countersink, if you're doing a lot of casework. $20 at Lee Valley will get you a solid counterbore and stop collar that can attach to any drill bit. At my shop I use a 9/64 hss brad point bit for the usual #8 screws with a #6 stop collar and it's never let me down. Probably get a solid year of use out of it unless I'm drilling into a lot of laminate

    I have that Kreg track saw, and while I don't think I have *nearly* as much slop as you did, I also found it really hard to get a good cut from it. And if you used the track extension, it was virtually guaranteed to end up crooked at that joint, no matter what I did.
    I upgraded to a ridiculously expensive track saw for a big project, but I think if I had to do it over again I'd follow one of the guides I've see on CZcams for making my own.
    I'm not a fan of your tracksaw because you can't see the cut line while placing the guide. I'd want one that is only on the fat side of the saw.

    I’ve wanted one of those fly cutter hole saw things just for the 6 inch PVC openings on some tool cabinets/carts. I should check for the cheap hole saws. Harbor Freight might have something. Either way I think I’m making a template out of scrap. Then I can use that template, hog out the middle with jigsaw, and clean up with router. Still really annoying because either a fly cutter isn’t big enough or hole saws that size are 30 dollars and up.

    I disagree with your take on #6 hole saws.
    The inherent issue with hole saws is friction. Burning is a symptom of friction. There’s techniques that can overcome the friction issue. I bought that cheap set a decade ago and it’s still going strong.
    Something you can do to prevent burning on the drill press is to clamp the wood so it doesn’t move around. Take smaller bites too.
    For hand held you don’t want to drill straight down perpendicular, you want to rock it back and forth a little, like a spinning top that’s about to fall over and wobbling, so you remove material on the walls so it cuts a hole slightly bigger than the outer diameter of the hole saw, so there’s less friction.
    Less friction= less heat = less chance you ruin the temper and the teeth go soft.

    At 8:35. I made a similar saw-guide a while back; it was very useful. After I had been using it for a while, I watched a CZcams video showing a simple mod that made it SOOO much better!
    All you need to do is drill 1.5" (40mm) holes approximately every 12" (300mm) along the saw-slot. this allows you to see your pencil lines on the workpiece, so you can accurately line up your cut.
    Even your mankiest cheap holesaw should do the job!
    Thanks to Tommy who showed it on his "One Minute Workbench" channel. czcams.com/video/H0BZLbW1lvQ/video.html
