Supermarket Sweep debut: 2/5/90

  • It's the return of the one and only Supermarket Sweep! Notice the subtle diffences between this episode and the later ones...one of my favorites being the fact David Ruprecht used to wear some awesome sweaters instead of a shirt & tie.
Also check out the ad for the debut of Rodeo Drive, a show that debuted the same day as Sweep, but didn't enjoy the same success.

For the first year, Supermarket Sweep on Lifetime was paired with the Jay Wolpert-created Rodeo Drive, which left the air after only 13 weeks (although reruns continued to air until August 31, 1990). From the second year onward until 1996, Supermarket Sweep on Lifetime was paired with the Pat Finn-hosted Shop ‘Til You Drop (produced by Stone-Stanley Entertainment (Scott Stone’s friend and partner Bob Synes passed away the previous year), now known as Stone & Company Entertainment), and for the next five years, Supermarket Sweep and Shop ‘Til You Drop made up Lifetime’s successful hour-long game show block.

If I ever hosted a revival of the Sweep, I would like to have the contestant selection be done more like TPIR and LMAD. I think having the genuine reactions of contestants suddenly being picked would add depth to it today. Everything else would be the same but I think 25k would be the right payout today

I think the emotion of childhood varies from person to person. This show was a part of my childhood and it was pretty darn fun to watch. but I admit most of my childhood revolved around other shows like Animaniacs, Looney / Tiny Toons, and various cartoons on other channels and such. Just because someone loved this show and had it a part of their childhood, and you didn't, doesn't make theirs sad. It's a preference. :)

I read somewhere that the show/crew tended to assign rather arbitrary prices to things like brooms or hoses. Then the contestants would grab them and look silly for the cameras as they fumbled with the big, clumsy items. That's why even in this ep they went for things like the garden hoses. It made for a more interesting show. I don't know if the new show will do that, but it's likely. I'd like to watch the new version when it comes out.

Used '$1,000,000 Chance of a Lifetime' sound effects for Season 1, and went on to use the ones from an unsold pilot hosted by Jimmy Cefalo called 'People on TV' based on People Magazine thereafter.

    Notable differences:
    No Shopping List (debuted later)
Audience visible during the Big Sweep (a curtain was later put over the audience area, then a fake wall by the tiny cart episodes later in 1990)
    No Logo on the podium
Dollars and cents in the Big Sweep--within a few episodes, it was changed to being rounded to the nearest dollar, as it was likely difficult to calculate winnings with coins involved..

I noticed subtle differences too, namely:
      - Lack of continuous announcing during the Big Sweep - I guess it was because this was the debut and they weren't used to it
      - Lack of music during the Big Sweep
      - The music during the Round-Robin was continuous and the crew hesitated on the Aunt Jemima response
      - Buzzer sound is completely different
      - Contestants seemed slower and far more careful than most others
It is interesting to watch though, I like "first episodes" :)

BUZZR's answer is: VERY LIKELY, as will other shows such as Whammy: The All-New Press Your Luck, Scrabble, Bruce Forsyth's Hot Streak, Time Machine, and many local lottery shows such as Flamingo Fortune (the first two years) and Illinois Instant Riches/Illinois Luckiest!

Dana Long Only problem with "Scrabble" is that BUZZR must get clearance from Hasbro. Once (if) this happens, then BUZZR can air them.

0:00-0:26 - *Johnny Gilbert:* Is this one of your fantasies? You see a big beautiful supermarket, and they say to you, "Go ahead, do what you've always wanted to do. Run wild. Grab everything you can get your hands on. Everything in this supermarket is yours, and it's all free." From Hollywood, where dreams do come true, it's the return of the one and only _Supermarket Sweep!_

was this show sponsored by some supermarket networks ? My question is ... where then picked up prices for real products? The same package of OREO's can cost 2.00$ in one shop and 2.30$ in another.

I used to like this program as well during the very early 90s. But after a few years, I got tired of it, because I thought it was so silly. As for fashions, look at the light pink T-shirt that Doris is wearing and the outfit her partner was wearing. Oh yeah, those fashions just scream late 80s and early 90s.
