- A very funny animated short film by Peg McClure featuring two cats, Squeak & Scratch. I've heard it was played on Nickelodeon in the 90's. This little gem was on a dusty old U'Matic archive tape I found in storage.
I loved this short as a kid. It was funny when it used to air on Nickelodeon in the early 90s. I was 5.
When Pokemon was first introduced in the U.S., I attempted to re-create this entire short with Pikachu and Meowth in the respective roles of these house cats.

This cartoon has been on CZcams for 10 years, and it was created at least 9 or ten years before that. I'm still coming back to watch it. I was a young mom when this was airing,
I think it's about 30+ years old. I remember watching it when I was in grade school. I'm 38 now.
Peg was my college roommate...I've always loved this cartoon. :)
Becky Swadner It was a GREAT one- actually inspired characters of my own in a way- I'm actually here cause I was showing someone the cartoon to explain that my characters have this kind of relationship... BTW, did she ever let you know which cat is Scratch and which one is Squeak?
I always assumed Squeak was the goofy dumb friendly one, but it's not really confirmed in the cartoon XD
@@battybuddy Squeak was indeed the goofy one. The two cats were littermates.
@@pegmcclure1109 I want you to know that I based two major characters dynamics in my own original idea, Maggie and Lucky on Scratch and Squeak in this cartoon in particular
Long story short it’s an idea I’ve had since I was a kid where all housecats are aliens and go off into outer space to save the world from alien rats when thwir owners aren’t looking. Lucky is a black cat who’s bad luck to everyone around him, but he doesn’t know it, and Maggie is a Persian rag doll who thinks Luckys giving her bad luck on purpose.
Did she clog her toilet with cats?

I wrote a paper on this particular cartoon nearly a decade ago now, when I was in college. It was in a video class, and the paper was about ways animation has changed and how this compares to animation styles of today. I got a B+ on it, and got to show this cartoon as well. Such a great day.
Peg McClure Wow! That's awesome! I absolutely love this animation. Could not get enough of it as a child and still can't today nearly 30 years old.
A couple of questions: what happened to the cats?
How did you get the style of a grainy tv between the dog barking and the cat running across the remote?
How did you come up with the background music? Did you match the animation to the music or did the music match the animation?
Wow! I wish I had been able to put all of that in my paper in college. My professor would have been shocked to find I'd talked to the creator. I don't animate much myself, I'm much more of a writer than an artist. I'm extremely grateful for the answers you've provided! Thank you very much!

I really wish I had screen shot the answers from THE creator herself, but time moves on and away they went. A great piece of animation still today
My mom loved this when it showed on Nick and so did me and my brother. We would always shout to mom when they played it so she could watch it with us
By far one of my favorite Nickelodeon shorts I remember! 🤣 So funny & takes me back to 93' real quick!
Poor litle Scratch. All he wants to do is take a nice peaceful nap someplace, and Squeak keeps messing him up.
Nice jazz grove. Kinda reminds me of the theme of "The Pink Panther."
First Squeak gets dunked in the crapper, but gets the last laugh when Scratch gets blown away by a remote control battery. Anyway, remembered this from my childhood, and quite entertaining too.

My little brother always liked this when we were little. We called it "The Black Cat and the Funny Cat." I'm so glad I was able to find this again.
I think this is what I've been trying to find for over 22 years...thanks. I just remembered a black cat being followed by another and the tapping sounds...thought it was sesame street...glad i found this thank you
I have spent my day off from work watching all these Nickelodeon shorts. "The Cat Came Back", every "Sports Cartoon", "Picnic on Imbrium Beach", "Dog Brain", "Waddles" and "Fast Food". I will likely keep hunting for more shorts. This is what happens when you're 29 and reaching your 1/3-life crisis. This is very sad, yet feels so right...
It does, when you get to Noozles, the Busy World of Richard Scary, etc...then you know time went fast.

The most elusive short film that aired on Nickelodeon was one short featuring a cartoon mouse toying with a stereo system tuning into different radio stations until What A Wonderful World plays and he starts dancing to it in a whimsical way.
Poor little black cat. All he wants to do is take a nap, and the striped cat doesn't leave him alone.
I remember this cartoon from when I was a very, very small child in the 1980s.... late 80s I think.... regardless, it played very often and and also, for what I remember to be a long period of time.... Brought back a flood of memories. I remembered it and knew what was going to happen in every scene despite not having seen it in... um.. 35 years. Probably because there were very few channels back then, esp for kids, and this plays MANY MANY MANY TIMES.... Absolutely amazing. Thank you for posting this.
The tabby reminds me of my parents' cat, Bear. He too is a little dopey.
I think my favorite part was the toaster, especially when the tabby climbs up and sticks it's tongue out at it. "Bleh!"

i remember these shorts used to air in between shows during the early days of nick jr...there was one with a walking box that keeps tripping over things, one with a bunch of animals playing hockey, and one with a hippopatamus and a smaller bear trying to ride in a hot air balloon that can't get off the ground....rugrats (which would later become one of nick's most popular creations) first aired in this format during the summer of 1990....

I remember seeing this for the first time as a 3 year old! I ran into the kitchen during breakfast to tell my parents how much I wanted to be the blue cat! ^_^
I remember this one vividly--those cats are adorable. I used to get disturbed as a kid during the ending when Squeak would cuddle Scratch and he'd get all poofy with those evil red eyes. XD.

I loved this short on Nickelodeon when I was a child back in the 90s. My mom also loved this one, as it reminded us of our own cats. Brings back memories to see it again.

This is probably the best Old School Nickelodeon commercial break animated short. Period.

I remember this cartoon. I especially like the music when the tabby is playing with the yarn. Another favorite short of mine was this cartoon about cows, drawn and narrated by a girl named Nicole (I can't remember her last name). I can remember some of the cartoon: "He was a brown- and tan-colored cow; she was a black- and white-colored cow...all the cows went to the Big Cow Dance Place". Then they tapped their hooves in a dancing rhythm and bellowed periodically.

I've been having a very vague memory of a cartoon I saw a part of when I was very young about two cats that I only saw once on Nickelodeon. I didn't think someone was actually able to put it on CZcams, let alone anyone remembering this at all!

Awesome, I haven’t seen this in close to 28 years or so, I vaguely remembered what it was, the biggest memory I had was the jazz percussion. Glad I found it by just typing in Old Nickelodeon Cat short haha

We had cats named Ashley and Smokey, and this cartoon is totally about them. Smokey, the big friendly oaf, would try to make friends with Ashley, and Ashley would attack him for doing so.
When I was about 10 I also used to make sounds like "snake jazz" from that Rick and Morty episode. My sister tells me it's because of this cartoon.
Scratch seems like a combination of a couple of my grandma's old black Persian cats, Rocky and Jr. One was very terrifying and mean looking, the other was a total brat who always bullied my poor grandma, constantly knocking over his wet food and biting her and clawing her in the butt every time she passed by him. He died of feline AIDS in 2006, while Rocky died in 2002.
Wow I remember this!! I miss my childhood. We 80s and 90s kids were very lucky. I miss those days.

I first saw this back in the 80s! HBO used to show stuff like this in between their movies (before MTV was around they showed music videos!) Took a little searching to find it here, I thought they were called Scratch & Sniff!

Another Rocketship Productions animation segement of 1988-1989 on Nickelodeon. Only unlike "dog Brain" this didn't end up on Liquid TV.
