Over the last few days, we have shared some of the invaluable video footage we got with Jim, while spending a week visiting with him in Maine during his summer market season. We offer these special highlights as our gift to the growing community who are working together to create an even better grass roots food movement.
Jim has been a pivotal role model of ours since 2011, not long after we first began to grow food. We can genuinely say that he was a significant catalyst for change in our lives & we owe the foundation of our success to Jim's influence. Now it is your turn to spend a week with Jim, at your own pleasure.

In early August, We took a trip up to Maine to visit with our favorite farmer friend, Jim Kovelski!
Each year in late spring, Jim travels up to a little town just outside Eastport, Maine, to grow the most delicious, clean & vibrant food you can find. Then in early fall, he packs up & heads down to Florida to repeat the same plan.
Jim does not follow the rules, He creates his own evolving adaptations; a mixture of pure refined classic agriculture (the scythe), techniques passed along by elder growers, elements from books that have proven their worth & the intrinsic download from living with the land & slowing down enough to read it's own suggestions.
He is able to make an honest living doing this very thing he loves so much. His days bring him joy, purpose, connection & peace. The insights & techniques he has collected are invaluable. He plants, harvests, preps & markets in a way that naturally flows & the whole natural farming process is just waiting to be shared with you.
We have been to visit Jim before but had never been able to come during the best & most productive time of the year for Jim. Everything is growing, blooming, ripening & the scenery around his camp is pure magic.
Over the next few days, we will be highlighting some of the historic footage we got with Jim.

Pete Kanaris GreenDreamsFL more info on the annual polyculture aspect. I'm on .32 of an acre with massive pine trees for canopy so am limited with what I can do with perennial polyculture. I have perennials mixed in with annuals, but will always be more dependent on annuals here even though I'm in Florida.

Pete Kanaris GreenDreamsFL Also would like to know how to market, searching the resourses on where and how to sell, pitfalls to avoid, how to package and protect foods going to market, how to care & increase longevity, keys to marketing success, create a branding? More about his planting when he leaves and puts things to ved to grow on his absences.

Ground cherry- we call 'Cape Gooseberry' in Aotearoa New Zealand- they turn dark orange inside their paper lanterns and make a delicious jam/preserve. Or sweet taste explosions popped in the mouth. Great gardening- mulch thick really keeps weeds down and watering demands lower.

Just planted a garden. Do you dry out grass clippings before putting them in garden bed with the plantings? Or do put fresh clippings first around the plants? And how thick for mulching? Just came accross this channel. 💘

I’m guessing the grass mulch holds in water, and he’s growing here during the rainy season?

Thanks for posting this. I love this farmer guy. I saw him via I think the Justin chicken guy and got interested in scything. He needs more coverage - he has a super fantastic message. Suggestions: 1.) shut the car door next time. How do you guys stand that dinging? Or is a kid over there playing? 2.) Get out and eat more veggies with the kid/kids. Maybe start a garden at your own home. You son's reference for a cucumber is a pickle. At least he sorta knows what it is. But that's like me thinking a dried fig was just like a fig newton (I had no other reference) and never had even heard of a fresh fig. What an amazing thing to eat that is, if you get the chance. Not criticizing you in particular, I was the same way. We all (most of us) think food comes from the grocery store and we're not even very familiar with the produce section. I like Jim (is that the farmer's name) munching his cuke to demonstrate to the kid. And the kid's like, okay, you're eating it. The pokey things aren't going to hurt. "It's good" he pronounces. And then you're like "It is?" Well, fuck, no wonder the kid isn't sure about eating veggies. You gotta demonstrate it more, by doing it yourself. You'll all be cultivating heart disease (diabetes, cancer, being overweight, etc.) less.
