  • In today's video I compare two of my favorite childhood toys: K'nex and LEGO. I spent many hours building growing up and I'm still a fan of both to this day.

And my favorite thing I like the most about LEGO and K’NEX are the Motorized/Robotic Sets. There’s LEGO Mindstorms and LEGO Technic with Power Functions/Powered Up (Motors, Sensors, Light Buttons, and Remote Controls). Some non-Technic LEGO sets like the model trains and mini cities also came with Power Functions. There were also some MUCH SIMPLER, much more barebones LEGO Robotics sets like LEGO WeDo and LEGO Boost. K’NEX on the other hand had Robot World and Cyber K’NEX in the Late-90’s/Early-2000’s, and the much newer Education Robotics Set in the 2010’s. There were also the MUCH SIMPLER Power & Play sets which were pretty basic and barebones motorized sets which you can create moving and walking objects, but without any programming or computer needed, and also no sensors. You only manually control the motor’s direction from the switch on the motor itself to go back and forth. But the REAL fun with using any K’NEX motor no matter how complicated or simple it is was on model Roller Coasters! K’NEX was SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED with roller coasters in mind, even though there are also some LEGO Roller Coasters as well, but building and buying a LEGO Roller Coaster Set would be considerably more expensive and more complicated to assemble than a K’NEX roller coaster. The way K’NEX pieces were designed to connect rods and beams together with a joint connector makes it perfectly ideal for building VERY MASSIVE model roller coasters, with considerably less complexity than if you are to build a LEGO Coaster of that same size, that would be VERY TEDIOUS to deal with when working with LEGO. LEGO was designed more with the look, aesthetic, and model accuracy in mind (form over function), while with K’NEX, it prioritizes structural strength, stability, rigidity and functionality.

Lego technic has pneumatics. K'nex should also add pneumatics. Maybe add a motorized pump. K'nex is more suitable for large things since it is less dense. Maybe they can make models of space rockets like from Space X.

I only like the classic K’nex. Their micro and bricks are just too cheap and flimsy. Their classic parts are very strong. Their older sets are way better than anything that they offer now. I haven’t actually built anything in a while, but I still have my Big Ball Factory set and 6ft Ferris Wheel up. I like the old K’nex better than both current day and old legos. But I like legos better than current day K’nex. I don’t think K’nex has a bright future, they don’t even sell them in most stores anymore, including Walmart.

My first k'nex set was a rollercoaster model and I didn't care about the instructions I just wanted to be creative to see what I could build.

LEGO attempted to copy K’NEX as well, with ZNAP, but it ultimately failed. But IMO, a still very similar but more successful idea for LEGO to compete with K’NEX instead of ZNAP was by releasing even more LEGO Technic Pieces and Sets and making them more complex. LEGO Technic pieces already shares A LOT of similarities with K’NEX anyway with the lack of studs, plus mechanical components like gears, cranks and levers, and even electric motors.

The legos allow less imagination visually because parts are themed and they statically look like specific models. Knex generally use cardboard cutouts to theme. The Legos marketing has given them an edge in educational robotic sensors and processors but Knex microbricks allow Legos tech parts to be used on Knex. Weight for weight Legos require too many parts to build something other than intended by the kit. Knex weakness is just a lack of mechanical promotion which is Knexs true strength. They need more worm gears, gear sets and controllers to take the market. Bad marketing emphasising poorly copying shapes for low age groups will be the demize of Knex.

Fun fact: Angry Birds and Mario Bros are in both.

yeah they should make more sets that have a lot of parts like the Ferris wheel lot of parts and cool and its pretty cheap

I buy them when I see them at thrift stores at a good price. Watching for microbricks and microKnex as they are harder to find in quantity. Microbricks may not be as well built as Legos but they allow mounting Legos robotics educational parts for more complex Knex machines.

There's was actually knex titanfall sets and if you don't know what that is its a fasted paced shooter game and there's a second game too and there both really good and are underrated
