You get more experience in the restaurant business, your body stays active, which is good, and it's a pretty easy job, plain and simple. Ofc we don't say: I wan't to be a dishwasher for the rest of my life'' But it's a good start and no shame in it at all. Put in some headphones if you can, and go to work. It's not that bad.

Also listening to music the whole time, and free food. It’s great. I just take a shower when I get home and wash my hands/arms a lot while working so it’s not too bad. You get used to the smell after about 2 weeks so it’s not even a bother anymore. And the trash isn’t so bad if you have a rhythm and schedule down to deal with it/cleaning stuff.

This was my first job ever and I quit today, I was just gonna leave during my break yesterday cause it fucking sucked but I ended up staying (to fund a guitar, I'll ultimately get paid about 100$(10$ an hour in Los Angeles)). I was 21 at the time and it was my first job after college, I thought it would be easy at first but after 7 months in the pit it was some of the worst experiences I’ve had. I still am glad I did it because it’s humbled me and made me stronger. Everything about this video is true though. Nobody cared about dishwashers 0 respect for mediocre pay

I wash dishes at a Mexican restaurant not because I want to but because I need the money. I get paid $8.25 which is complete shit but I do get the hours I want. I work with a bunch of friendly Guatemalans who will cook for me whenever I want and they do help me with the prep dishes at times. You won’t get treated like shit if you’re a hard worker but it will definitely feel like the FOH doesn’t respect you with the way they just toss the dishes with napkins/silverware/trash still on it. It’s easy to get the hang of it and I usually just throw my headphones in and bust my ass. Tbh it’s only worth it if you need the money but if you don’t then I wouldn’t recommend it. Everything he said was spot on tho but I’m just trying to better myself and get back home.

you forgot the alcoholism bro. the foh spends the most at the bar, the line drinks the hardest, but the dishwasher drinks the most. every day. i used to keep a bucket of ice filled with 16 tall cans of beer in it in the corner of the pit, half for during work, half for after. i've cut down tho as i don't want to be an alcoholic or drink my shift away. right now, i sit around 6-8 talls a day and when i take a smoke break, i have a beer. it's not that bad being a dishwasher, i make as much as a cook these days. and the number one thing to remember is - every single other job in a restaurant is easily replaceable if the person fucks up enough. a dishwasher has to really really fuck up to get fired. because it's the hardest job to fill as no one wants it. so to anyone out there thinking of doing this as a summer job, pt job or career; understand - work your ass off every day, all day long and you will always have a job; anywhere in the world, for the rest of your life! don't let the job run you; you run the job. and every single day, you will leave the job with a sense of job satisfaction and you will appreciate every single seond that you are not in the pit. it gives you a sense of life appreciation that everyone else in every other job wishes they had at the end of the day. for you; that's just another day. good luck, my brothers and sisters

I'm a dishwasher. It's my Second job. Basically all he said is true. But I actually like my job. Yea the pay sucks for what you do but it's the best I can find right now. My Co workers are nice and help me out a lot more than they should even though it is my third day. They help me if they have nothing to do sometimes or if I have questions. The free meals, yea it's hard to eat there because there's really never a time too. Especially when the cooks are busy with orders. Also the smell of the food all day makes you not want to eat well at least for me. Especially when you clean other people's dirty dishes and the smell is horrible especially when it lingers hours after you clock out. Sometimes the waiters are so busy and rushed they will literally throw the dishes at you. You never stay dry and the left over food sticks to you all night. You are usually the last one there. And the back pain is true. I already have a bad back and standing all day with no to little breaks kills me. Honestly though I won't complain because it is still a job that pays which I'm thankful for.

    cons:
    - always last out the building (say 11pm-midnight, sometimes 1am)
    - having to put up with repeated crap music that the chefs put on
    - having to deal with a psychopath headchef
    - phonecalls from other KPs asking you to do their shift (usually followed by some BS why they can't do the shift)
    - coming across a lazy chef that gets you to fetch you something from about a feet away
    - dumb front of house staff that get in your way
    - taking out 50kg bin bags that split because the chefs fill them up without thinking about who has to lift it.
    - cleaning up spills because of a dumb move a chef has done, when really thEY should clean it up.

Every time I've walked in that place I've ALWAYS have had to pick up after someone's lazy ass that worked before me. I was by far the best dishwasher and longest dishwasher they had and the managers still treated me like I was 5 years old. The amount of times I've stayed there past 12 am is unreal, just because of how much stuff you have to clean and watch everyone go home hours before you do, when you even came in as the same time they did. You can land a pretty decent gig with a company like ecolab or a competitor that specializes in everything you’re putting your hands in on a daily basis. My dish area is tiny as hell, there's not enough room to store plates or whatever else on my clean side of the dish machine which is why they all just need to go straight to the cooking line in any case. I always keep a sink filled with hot soapy water to soak stubborn and screaming hot frying pans, and the end of each night just depends on how fast your able to keep up on everything coming to you throughout the course of your shift. After 3 years I'm definitely considering to move on to a whole new different industry instead of the food service.

all of these issues look like a symptom of poor management and restaurant practices. i've been a cook for over 5 years, recently lost my job and have been starting at the bottom on the dishes the past month (a job i've never had). i was just trained on the line. i started out at a decent $11 wage, not great but certainly not the minimum of $7.25. dishwashing, i received a lot of thankfulness and praise for my hard work, and management and the cooking staff always made sure to give me a break to eat at least a little bit. sounds like you worked in a toxic kitchen where nobody respects anyone elses hard work. in fact, i would say the dishwasher is the hard number one hardest worker in any commercial kitchen, hands down.

Here in Australia, here are the PROS and CONS:
PRO: You get paid $30 an hour or more and I'm not kidding. Everyone in Australia is super rich, even the street sweepers. There's no tipping in Australia because everyone is so rich already.
PRO: You get to talk about stuff with the friendly chefs, most of them are from overseas in Australia, attracted by the high wages.
PRO: It's the same every day, when you get good, you stay good.
CON: Because you get paid so much, the deal is you work smarter not harder. I never heard of any dishwashers getting neck and back pains. You have to work super fast and you have to chop vegetables, clean floors, wipe down the sinks, and very quickly, so quickly that you can take long breaks to have some small talk with the staff.
CON: You have to refuse all food and drinks offered by staff. If you don't, you could get the sack.
CON: You have to dress immaculately, smell good and look like some sort of celebrity. If you don't, you could get the sack.

Damn, they don't even let me have free food at my job. I work dishwasher at a casino and it is horrible. I work graveyard shift, Wash Plates and pots, clean the matts, Pull down the vents to wash them, clean the ALL the drains that the food falls in, take out the trash and the huge pile of cardboard boxes outside, change the oil, wipe down the areas where the cooks work at. The kitchen is always active, so I have to work around the cooks while they are cooking, even if it means I have to stand up on top of the stove to take down the vents as they are cooking, they make us wear masks and goggles while we wash dishes, which makes no sense to me, and all the supervisors are lazy micromanagers. It's my 3rd year there so far and I've been trying to move up to a different department for a year and a half now, but from what I heard, they don't want to move me because of the fact that no one wants to wash dishes and we don't get new employees much, but If I quit, there will be less workers regardless. It sucks seeing all that fresh food being thrown away and you can't even have any, while looking at all the people in the other department work far less and make far more as you stand in a corner by yourself washing dishes with depressing thoughts, hoping your boss doesn't ask you to help them with some bullshit around the kitchen they could do only to send you back to the dishes that just piled up 3x's as much within a short time. I come home, sleep for about 10-11 hours barely anytime to eat and get ready before I go back to work with a stress headache. I hate doing this and I want a new job so badly, it feels like i'm never getting out of this.

It was fun for a while because all my best friends worked there, but the thing that made me quit was this old dishwasher that would leave 2 hours early and leave me fucked for the rest of the night. I quit there and got a new job working downtown for Facebook paying $16 an hour with benefits, paid vacation, paid sick leave, 401k plans and 12 holidays out of the year. I have worked there for about 3 and a half months and already have about +$7k plus the rest of what I was saving from my old job. Payback's a bitch . As far as i'm concerned they got wtf they deserved . F--- them in a huge way . Might attempt to get another job 1 way or another but right now just worrying about myself . I completely agree!
Most days I worked around 8 to 10 hours and had 12 hour shifts Fridays and Saturdays. Got tired of dealing with the waiters, how loud they were and how they could land a job as a waitress/waiter but couldnt stack dishes right... Got tired of being two people at once, washing the dishes and sprinting back to the cooking line to put them up... Did I forget to say I had to play hopscotch through the cooks to put up dishes while they're cooking super hot food with flames flying everywhere? Had to deal with the frequent bumping into cooks because they don't know how to use peripheral vision. Got tired doing prep. Got tired of leaving the dishpit and going out to where customers eat in order to bring the dishes back to the dishpit because the bussers were moving like -2mph, then wash the dishes and then put up the dishes... Got tired of people filling the trash cans up so much that if you dared trying to throw it into the dumpster it's an automatic shower... Got tired of the unreliable Co workers that always showed up late and putting more hell on me... Got tired of putting so much work in and not getting paid for it... Some days it felt like a business startup and I thought I was making progress only to realize the fact that I got paid 540$ after two weeks of work equivalent to training for Mr.Olympia... Got tired of the cooks on the line asking me to get them plates while they just stand there with nothing to do... There were times where they left the cooking line to come to the dishpit to tell me they needed a certain pot, pan, or whatever when they could've used the same energy to get it themselves... I quit yesterday... I'd rather just trade binary options and flip 40 bucks into a years salary in a matter of a week... No point in breaking my back so someone else can make my millions. Screw that!

Worked as a dishwasher for 3 years... I quit in February of this year with 2 weeks notice and didn't leave on a bad note because despite the job, the people including the owner were great to be with at staff events and such so now I go there as a customer. Anyway, this video speaks the truth about being the dishwasher. After my first few weeks I got much better and stuff but it was still stressful in all the 3 years down the road working there having everyone else (managers, cooks, and servers) constantly requesting me to put particular things through the machine, change a soda syrup box, portion food, mop a messy spot on the dining floor.... I can go on. What's even worse is that managers have asked me to drive to a store across the street or around the corner to grab shit they were short on... doing all those fucking requests or favors for the rest of the staff caused my dishpit to pile up like crazy, and speaking of which, I always walked in at the start of my shift seeing a big mess (over 50 plates, prep dishes, pots and pans) waiting for me... and no one ever gave a single fuck. I'm so happy to go there as a customer just knowing I don't have to put up with that bullshit anymore!

I’ve been working for 3 months as a dishwasher in the Bay Area at a steakhouse , I work 6 days a week and 8 hours each day and I make around 820 a week. I’m only 15 and a half and I’m doing this to support my 3 younger siblings and my mother. You never will satisfy anyone , NEVER. Co workers will treat you like shit not all but some. Some can be helpful some can be bossy and rude , but don’t take that shit personal, don’t let those fuckers effect you , also I recommend to only do this job if you know you are a hard worker and a non sensitive type of person, I’m gonna leave soon and I recommend to only do this job as a last resort.

So glad I watched this before my first night of dishwashing back in December, but I'm now proud to say I've been a part time dishwasher as a 17 year old for about 4 months now. I just wish my colleagues would watch this video, they've been dishwashing for a month but still complain

Without experience almost 3 days as a dishwasher in famous and busy restaurant. They put me Friday, Saturday and Sunday which are the most busiest days. You are right and I noticed the cons and I feel the back pain and headache. Any way the pros are huge. Let me explain
    1. You gonna be humble for dishwashers across the glob
    2. If you have a good Communication skill you will learn everything from cookers to the managers how restaurant operate and how to cook. Your vision and plan.
    3. Once you did dishwasher job the rest are all a peace of cakes

yea the fucker told me to come in early, im like yea bro sure, im gonna go home at midnight, paint my white picket fence, eat a slice of apple pie and then goto bed so i can wake up at 6am to "come in early".. the only thing good about my dish job is lying to this doush bag and ignoring his calls on my day off- he comes at me all... weak and lacking authority
