  • As part of the discussion on dolphin husbandry, the question arises as to whether a breeding ban would be good for dolphins. That's why we talked to experts from the Duisburg Zoo. In the interview, you can see the chief veterinarian Dr. Kerstin Ternes and dolphin keeper Roland Edler, who answer the question.
    The specialist Dr. vet. Ternes first explains the importance of the behavioral spectrum, which would be limited because of a breeding ban. She also points out that there are no medicines to implement a breeding ban in an animal-friendly manner. Therefore, she is against a breeding ban of dolphins.
    The whale expert Roland Edler, who cares for dolphins in the Duisburg Zoo for decades, but in addition leads expeditions into the wild, also explains very clearly that there are bachelor groups of dolphins, but no pure female groups without offspring. Thus, he also points out that it would not be animal-friendly to implement such a breeding ban.
    A dolphin breeding ban, as demanded e.g. by the radical animal rights organization PETA, would lead to animal cruelty.Tomorrow the initiative #EmptyTheTanks aims to advertise this animal cruelty with populism.
    On zoos.media we have already published a lot about this issue. The reasons also mentioned in the video are among the main reasons why a breeding ban is not good for dolphins like those at the dolphinarium of Duisburg Zoo. An husbandry with a breeding ban would lead directly into animal cruelty for bottlenose dolphins.
    The husbandry and breeding of the animals at Duisburg Zoo is very successful. The survival rates of young animals are comparable to those in nature and the animals at Duisburg Zoo in addition grow older than their wild counterparts.
    Dolphins in modern dolphinariums are moreover healthier and less stressed. It has been proven that they emit happiness hormones during training. Over 80 of the most renowned scientists in this field support the husbandry of marine mammals.

    To put a ban on dolphin's breeding programs is the same like to say a woman (with no reason) :
    -You have a ban on having a child!
    So do you think it will be better for her..no it won't!

    I just wanted to add that birth control pill for humans is actually really safe and even healthy for women. Of course they do have some contraindications, but just like every medicine (for example, you can't use ibuprofen if you have high blood pressure). In other animals, such as dogs, birth control methods aren't as investigated as they are in humans and therefore not safe for long term use. The same thing happens with lions or dolphins in this case, and even if they were safe there have been a fair amount of cases of females becoming pregnant under BC (such as Taima, a killer whale who lived at SeaWorld Orlando). And even if they were safe and had a perfect effect, a big problem still appears, just like the caretakers in the video say: dolphins, killer whales and other animals are organized in social groups and having a diverse amount of individuals is important.

      You empathize a very important point 👍 : medication is not 100% sure like it isn't in humans. Also, it's important to add, that if a pregnancy occurs under this medication, it could cause health dangers for the calf and the female. Moreover, there are hints that some medication has negative effects on treatment to cure other health problems.

    what are facilities such as Duisburg zoo and loro parque opinion on seaworlds breeding ban for orcas

    • @zoosmedia
      @zoosmedia  Před 6 lety +2

      Well, we think they made their point pretty clear: In the video above, the experts of Duisburg Zoo make clear statements. In this video czcams.com/video/MkpodZSGzho/video.html , Chuck Tompkins make pretty clear what experts think about SeaWorld's breeding ban and how important breeding is. Moreover, projects like Zoo Nation and dolphinaria.truth made really clear, that there are a lot of experts opposing SeaWorld's decision. Also, scientists communicated that they were sad about this breeding ban.
      So there are a lot of trustworthy experts raised their voice, but not in a way like animal rights extremists did, because of experts always criticize constructively. Unfortunately, this kind of criticism is not so attractive for media and it wasn't published as much as the populism of animal rights organization, which also pay a lot to spread their statements. There are good things SeaWorld does, but this breeding ban accompanied by the cooperation with the animal rights extremists from the HSUS was wrong as many experts around the world concluded.
      The experts of modern zoos never publically attacked SeaWorld, because the issue of a breeding ban is not only about one facility. Every trustworthy expert will conclude that a general breeding ban for dolphins is wrong in every case, so there is no need to focus on one facility.
      These animals, especially the females, need a family to thrive a breeding ban destroys their group. A researcher visited Duisburg Zoo and compared the group structure and socializing behavior with wild dolphins and concluded, that the animals have a natural and normal group at Duisburg Zoo.
      Dr. Kathleen Dudzinski: "I’ve been studying wild dolphins since the early 90s, and it’s been almost a decade for various captive dolphins. I’ve studied a couple groups of wild dolphins, dolphins [at Dolphin Encounters] and dolphins in Germany [Zoo Duisburg], in a man-made pool. And, by collecting data the exact same way, in all the sites, and analyzing it in exactly the same way, in all the sites, we can do direct comparisons. So, we looked at them to see if there are significant differences or similarities in dolphin interaction, and I have not found any significant differences in dolphin behavior when I’ve used those methodologies. So, when you have a group of animals that are healthy and happy and they have a good social environment, I don’t see any differences between wild dolphins and captive dolphins."
      So this amazing group structure would be destroyed by a breeding ban, which would prevent the group to develop normally. Breeding can not be stopped without animal cruelty.

      thank you i hope they stop the ban as i think its cruel to stop animals doing something they would naturally do as kohana in loro parque rejected both of her calves do u think loro parque will breed her again and will Skyla ever have a calf

    • @zoosmedia
      @zoosmedia  Před 6 lety +1

      Well, calf rejection is a normal behavior as far as science knows; it's not really often, but it occurs in so many species. For orcas, this basic fact can't be proven or refuted, because scientists can't observe orca calves in the first six months. A rejected calf would die a few hours after birth. So, while there's no proof it doesn't occur in the wild, scientists conclude that it's normal for orcas as it is in many other species.
      Calf rejection is a multifactorial system and you don't really why animals do it in most cases. Kohana learned how to raise a calf, so there's nothing in her life history, which would indicate a rejection, so still, nobody knows why she did it.
      Loro Parque advocates for a natural behavior and Kohana is the matriarch at the moment, so it's not impossible she will mate with a male and gets pregnant. Sykla is lower in the hierarchy and related to all males at Loro Parque, so she won't breed with them and modern zoos and aquariums prevent inbreeding. This doesn't mean Skyla will never get pregnant, there are other ways, which are animal-friendly and would offer her a chance to get pregnant.
      In fact, we don't know nothing about the breeding plans of Loro Parque, but you can contact them and ask them. As soon as something new is published you will also have the chance to see it on our web page.

      I have not watch a lot dolphins in the wild but do get a feeling by watch dolphins in captivity are acting close to natural when in a good man made habit.

    Also irgendwie finde ich das mit den männchengruppen nicht so toll für die Tiere. Wenn ich ein Delfin wäre fände ich es ziemlich scheiße in meinem ganzen Leben nur noch andere Typen zu sehen und nie wieder eine Frau

    • @zoosmedia
      @zoosmedia  Před 6 lety +2

      Deswegen passiert das ja auch nicht. 😉 Wie in den Junggesellengruppen in der Natur, sind hier die Männchen auch nur temporär und schließen sich Zeit ihres Lebens natürlich einer Familiengruppe an.
