    Another great video! Is terrific seeing Luke getting into it! Two tips of the day: as others have mentioned Cory - always use a single pair of the Cat 5/6 for CT. Twisted pair are twisted together for the purposes of canceling out electromagnetic interference (EMI) from external sources; for instance, electromagnetic radiation from unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cables, and crosstalk between neighboring pairs. The advantage of twisting is that all wires are equally affected by external influences, so the unwanted signals are canceled out. The role of twisting is to minimize the interferences from external magnetic fields.
    I highly recommend getting 4:1 double walled heat shrink. It shrinks great and releases a glue to seal the connection etc.

    Doesn't using two pairs like that eliminate the point of twisted pair wiring?

    • @G6EJD
      @G6EJD Před 2 lety

      Absolutely not, their technique is perfectly acceptable. Twisted pairs reduce the effect of induced common mode currents, but in this instance only one CT is being installed, so there can be no crosstalk. Also any external interference would have to be enormously high to induce a current into the wires and could never be encountered in a domestic situation.

    15:40 Maybe it doesn't matter in this application, but generally shouldn't you "mix" pairs for better signal integrity (i.e. positive on stripes and negative on solid or vice versa), as you then are taking advantage of individual pair twist?

    • @mikeselectricstuff
      @mikeselectricstuff Před 2 lety +1

      Yes - probably won't make that much difference but doesn't hurt to maximise signal integrity.

    • @warrmr
      @warrmr Před 2 lety

      I was going to jump in and defend Cory until I saw the way that he terminated that Phoenix block. OMG that should come with a trigger warning! :) The number of installs I have been to where a control signal/audio signal etc was not working look at the phoenix going to the device and its terminated like this and the pairs are shoring out because it is not properly terminated like this. Then you end up having to cut it back and doing it properly.
      @corey look into some hellerman tyron tubing and a hellerman applicator (Kindly known in the trade as a fannyt stretcher * Sorry * ) Leave a nice tail from the cut jacket, nice bit of hellerman over the cut where you had the great heat shrink. a couple of ferrules to join the brown and brown/white to a nice solid connection then a good 10mm of cable from the cut jacket to the Phoenix block.
      RE using the brown pair for + and the blue pair for - this is quite common to double up the pairs when over a long ish distance to stop the voltage drop causing bad comms (saves on repeaters intermediate boxes. ) Ive done this in a pinch for RS232 over about 20 metres, worked brilliantly at around 9600 baud with no data loss. Didn't work using just the single cores but doubling it up saved the day..

    • @bar10005
      @bar10005 Před 2 lety +1

      @@warrmr I have nothing against doubling up conductors, just was under impression that connecting pair as positive and negative and then doubling it with another pair, may result with better signal integrity.

    • @warrmr
      @warrmr Před 2 lety

      @@bar10005 I believe you are correct. If the devices are using a balanced signal then the twists in the wire induce the interference on both the + and - lines at the same rate. When it gets to the receiving ent it takes the - signal rotates it 180 degrees out of phase overlays it to the + signal and boom interference is gone. It’s a bit more than that im sure there is a video somewhere about that on CZcams.
      There is also the debate on which end of the cable you should ground the shield on. I say the power side of the signal chain eg the transmitter or master device. Not sure what the book says or electrical theory though so I could be wrong.

    • @warrmr
      @warrmr Před 2 lety

      @Will Woodhall I would suggest following the manufactures recommendations .
      If it is a system you are designing you would need to ensure that the voltage drop on the cable using a single pair is still within the acceptable ranges for a high and low signal. eg a +-24v signal may still register a high at +10v and a low at -5v so you have to ensure you are within thresholds at the sensor end without any false triggering by signal noise.
      I would always ground the shield at the panel end but im not sure if that is habit or if there is a reason for it, I also prefer to use a single pair where possible rather than doubling up.

  • @Cyberflow
    @Cyberflow Před 2 lety

    did they use blue and white-blue as one wire of the current transformer and braun and white-braun as the other? Wouldn't that defeat the shielding effect of a twisted pair cable...

    • @G6EJD
      @G6EJD Před 2 lety

      CT’s do not need twisted pair cables to reduce common mode currents and their impedance is so low it would be inconceivable that induced currents occurred.

    • @G6EJD
      @G6EJD Před 2 lety

      They definitely got the CT wiring correct, there is only one CT being installed and there can be no common mode currents induced in the cable run as the inductive impedance will be so low. Plus using two twisted pairs will lead to increased CT reading accuracy which is always desirable. It’s good to see the Chaps understand their electrical engineering theory.

    Just curious, Not trolling. Is Luke not a qualified spark? Seem to be showing him very basic things and he doesnt really look like an apprentice.

      Because Tesla chargers are very poor spec for the cost. They look nice but that's all they have going for them.

    Normally love the videos but the way Corey butchered that enclosure and putting 50x50 behind what looks like the flow and return isn’t premium service in my eyes. 👎👎

      I’d beg to differ. Not ideal but totally a professional way of doing it and we don’t know the full details of the job from a 20 minute clip or even what the customer wanted. Besides does Corey do the materials order and quotes?
