- The character `Bernard Righton' is a flipped-parody of 70's British comedian Bernard Manning, who was infamous for particularly un-pc humor.

My brother thought he were a pair of curtains...I strongly advised him to see a psychiatrist. He did. The psychiatrist was able to determine the curtain issue was a form of disassociation linked to a previous undiagnosed childhood trauma. My brother is much happier now.
Same thing happened to my roller blind

Right on!
Just great. A giant of comic timing. And a damn good actor. Well done fella,. Bet Bernard would love it.
Bernard would have hated it.
@@Lorenzo-cp7qs good
He hated it. He was interviewed about it at the time and said so.
Bernard did not like it because he was a hateful piece of shit
Yesss finally tracked this wonderful character down. Heard him years ago and still talk about him. Right on you complete legend
Really clever, John never disappoints
No, he doesn't, he's excellent.
I can see why Paul Whitehouse and Charlie Higson wanted John Thomson to be in The Fast Show.
Bernard Righton- 23 years ahead of his time.
RIPPED OFF JERRY SADOWITZ...
I watched this thinking how amazingly ahead of his time this is.
Foreshadowing
A fantastic act by John, way ahead of its time , he was a superb creation , still as funny today, even ,ore so
Doing Bernard Manning in a polite way lol, brilliant.
The way he repeats the first line, just so spot on. I like the taxi one
It’s terrible
@@Lorenzo-cp7qsall right Karen, calm down
@@thomasedmundrichardsyou stick to that alternative comedy, you know, what isn’t funny. Wanker
So much of an under-rated character. Bring him back!
Wouldn't work now. Most people don't know who Bernard Manning is anymore.
@@jamesmason8436 or the EU
I can't believe this was so long ago! Wonderful.
These days he would definitely get booked by all the panel shows.
probably the best closing line ever
I’ve seen him do the same with diabetes in which case it’s insulin 😅
Bernard Righton - the comedian of the 2020s.
The nervous looking lady telling him where she gets her hair done! 🤣
What did I say Roy?
She said they’re all poofs and lezzers
Hmmm.... great.
Not seen this for decades, still funny now

pure genius. had my head reeling. brilliant
The audience didn't get the 'that's not my dog' joke
I'll be honest, I don't get the 'distemper' dog joke. Care to explain?
@@jamesmason8436 All of his jokes are just a "right on" alternative punchline to older jokes, so the old punchline was "that's not my dog" as to the reason why that particular dog bit him, whereas his updated version was the dog has the canine virus distemper, which presumably made it irritable and caused it to bite.
@@seanscanlon9067 ah, I hadn't heard the original joke. Makes more sense now.
Thats not my dog goes back to vaudeville I think. However I saw a comedian years ago who put a bit of a spin on it by doing that and a few other old jokes as a very serious, enthused and emphatic JFK giving a speech. Expecting that voice to say profound, important things in his Bostonian accent and hearing really stupid, stale old jokes was pretty funny. The set up was "Imagine JFK instead had wanted to be a stand up comedian. A MANNN ( Raising hand and pointing finger )....goes INto a BAHH. He broat a DOAGIE in THEYAHH...annuttha man asked HIMM, does YOWAH DOAG bite?........the man says NOH....the man then pets the doagie. The doagie BOYTS the man owen his HAND. He said "I thought YOO sed yowah dohwag doesn't boyt? The man REPLAWS "DATS - NOT - MY - DOHWAG!".
( This may have not translated but I thought I'd try as an exercise anyway ).
PMH you’ve missed the point of the character. It’s a mickey take of Bernad Manning who used to do the racist, sexist and generally offensive versions of these jokes, and John has taken this jokes and changed the punchline to one you’re not expecting. You kinda have to know the original jokes to begin with.
One of John’s best characters.
Fat Bob!
Brilliant character and great writing - I'd completely forgotten this one!
I could never forget him. One of my all time favourite comedy characters.
No wonder you forgot- it’s crap

Bugger, had just rewound and taken note of clockage, to make the same comment. Are we a bit sad?
Sounds just like him.
Well now you know where he got it from.
It's quite revolutionary for this comedy to be presented back then
Reactionary comedy to the 60s/70s comedy club scene had been done to death by the 90s
Still good though. It probably seems more out there now as I doubt he’d even be able to get away with this nowadays l. Certainly not on mainstream tv
You have to know the original gags to get the humour in this!
Not really. You just have to know Manning's stage persona and material, then invert the whole thing. The specific gags don't matter- the humour lies in the spectacle of Bernard Manning abandoning his shtick.
I've been telling that multicultural society joke since this aired. Still funny.
Lol,me too and nobody ever laughs, because theyre waiting for the 'real' punchline. And that cracks me up too!

john has that belly for real these days.
Deserves it. All bought and paid for
Pretty sure he covered most of the jokes from the "Bad Jokes" song in Lenny Henry's standup video. Just brilliant
You wouldn't get away with this nowadays etc..
Why would you want to get away with it?
@@---df5sr I was being silly. Twas 3 years ago now, I was so much younger then, things seemed simpler. The trains ran on wheels, and rolf harris was a revered entertainer. (Might be confusing the timeline a bit, this happens to us all eventually)

More relevant in 2021 than it was 26 years ago. Bring him back!
I remember this from the mid 1990s, I used to go to college with his brother Ben and I had no idea they were related, I couldn't make the connection after I saw this despite knowing that Ben had a brother who did Spitting Image voices etc.
He used to live in Greenwich and come into the pub where my ex worked. One weekend we were sitting with him and every ten minutes he would stand up and shout 'kaiser soze', then sit back down like it never happened... His girlfriend at the time told us she got off with Paul gascoine in a cupboard at an industry do!

Jimmy Carr in the audience?
Great stuff. Slightly undermined by the stereotypical view of all taxi drivers being ignorant racists.
To be fair he's not far wrong - seemed a fair few around in the 90s.
Hmm...if anything, I think he's mocking the typical stereotype rather than saying all taxi drivers are ignorant racists.
But even as someone who has hardly used a taxi in my entire life, I can't entirely argue against the stereotype (the few times I've been in a taxi, the driver was often an ignorant racist).
