  • In Dubai, the landscape of takeaway food delivery is rapidly changing. This evolution isn’t just about convenience, it’s a testament to the city’s commitment to innovation and societal progress.
    Meet Khalifa Al Qama, the executive director of Dubai Future Labs, and his dedicated team. Their mission? To harness the power of robots in enhancing social and economic well-being for all of humanity. In a world where food and takeaways are integral to our daily lives, their work holds profound significance.
    When designing the robot, the pizza box became fundamental in the testing phase. In this week’s video, we’ll see a pizza’s journey from the oven to the front door, guided by a delivery robot. Join us as we explore the intricate workings of the robot, and discover why our future with robotics is something to look forward to.

      Depending on the meal, however, less concern of our meal(s) being abused or crushed in transit with a fairly predictable ETA.
      The human interaction and knowing our money circulates for the benefit of who we see at the door is the most valuable aspect of the transaction.

      Not really, but I think the issue is disclosure. Like if I'm ordering some fried food from across town I
      1.) don't want it delivered by a slow robot, as it won't be crispy anymore by the time it reaches me.
      and
      2.) In general I don't want to "tip" if the tip doesn't go to the driver. If for example I was buying groceries and someone has to load up the robot I'd tip the loader, but not a non-sentient robot.

    Reminds me of that scene from the movie "Flight of the Navigator" when a kid escapes a government science lab he was being held in to be studied, by hiding inside a little robot machine just like one of these that was meant to carry food to the room they were keeping him in. He climbed inside the bottom part, closed the little door on the front and it wheeled away with him in it. 😂

    there are so many instances of wheelchair users sharing how these bots are a danger to them on the sidewalk, even ending ending up with one of them stuck on a crosswalk after the light had changed because a robot was blocking the sidewalk ramp and, unlike someone able-bodied, they couldn't just go around the bot. even if you don't know those testaments offhand, I don't think it takes that much imagination to realize how sidewalk bots can be an accessibility issue. I don't watch these videos for hard-hitting journalism, but I think a more objective look at this topic would have made the video much more interesting and informative. not having the freedom to explore that angle is the price you pay for a sponsored video I guess.

    • @Nevir202
      @Nevir202 Před 19 dny +5

      TBH, "But sometimes..." thinking is a real problem.
      Mostly because people engage in it in such a selective manner. We shouldn't have these because SOMETIMES it might block a path?
      Well, then we certainly shouldn't have airplanes because SOMETIMES they crash and end not only the people on them, BUT SOMETIMES also others.
      Not to mention cars, motorcycles, etc.

    • @corynnvictoria
      @corynnvictoria Před 19 dny

      @@Nevir202 interestingly, that line of thought was the justification for initially not implementing curb ramps! even into the 1980s, "why should we update city infrastructure if a curb might *sometimes* force a disabled person to go halfway around the block in traffic to find a way to get on the sidewalk?" was the government's response to disability activists. of course, we know that curb ramps don't just benefit wheelchair users, they benefit people who use walkers and canes, people lugging suitcases and trolleys, people pushing strollers, and - ironically - sidewalk robots. I highly recommend the documentary "Crip Camp" if you want to educate yourself more about disability rights and how they were won. if not, I think we should end this discussion here.

    • @miznic
      @miznic Před 18 dny +4

      This is a very valid concern. -- I am disabled and walk with a cane; I can't get around stuff and stop quickly. The guys interviewed here remind me a lot of the visionaries that came before them... and I'm sure that lab will take that into consideration and work with that. They're not trying to reinvent the wheel... rather, they're flexible and understand the challenges that come with robots and human interaction.
      I look forward to seeing more from Dubai Future Labs. I get the feeling they're going to be a significant player in the years to come.

    • @freechilli8755
      @freechilli8755 Před 18 dny +4

      I think what you say is valid but we could take a different perspective to it - maybe delivery robot proliferation can help improve disable-friendly infrastructure? If this technology becomes important, it then makes business sense to ensure the surrounding infrastructure supports the robots. And since both wheelchair users and robots require similar ramps and wider pathways, we get a somewhat win-win for both.

    • @HKNotch
      @HKNotch Před 17 dny

      @@Nevir202 First of all - your opinion is bad. There are always exceptions that need to be properly addressed. Simply saying "Oh its only SOMETIMES" as why we cannot have nice things is a horrible thing to say. Oh, Boeing's new planes are fine because only "SOMETIMES" they crash. It is extremely important to raise counterpoints. You are stupid because you are advocating for an entire society of "yes men" instead of actual thinkers.
