I'm glad i came across this video tonight. I bought a condominium built in the mid-90s that I'm working hard at remodeling and I was wondering how I should treat the baseboards and trim. Thank you, Paint people!
You are a lifesaver! I have a large kitchen and am getting ready to paint oak cabinets and all walls. I’ve been dreading the trim. This is the answer! Thank you!
Yes! This IS the answer!
It's ugly
A great consideration for sure!! This was really popular 15 to 20 years ago and nice to see it is becoming more common again!! Glad you noted the paint finish should be different for trim!! Thanks again for a great informative video!!
Thanks for watching Cindy! Yes! We're bringing back the 90's!
I just changed my trim from what you are talking about to white. I love the fresh look of white. I’ll never go back to what we had!
I am with you! I’ve always found white baseboards distracting because they tend to cut up a room needlessly. But then you did say that, didn’t you ;) Feels more luxurious when a wall colour butts with a beautiful floor. For white or same-as-wall-colour ceilings, I think it depends on the amount of light in the room, how enveloped you want to feel, ceiling height, etc. I’ve done both. Thanks for the fun video!
Hey, and who doesn't want to feel luxurious! Thanks Kimberley!
so many beautiful colors in this video! as i had mentioned on your other videos, i just painted my walls and trim with naval. flat on walls, high gloss on trim. it looks so elegant. im really happy with it. ppl told me i was nuts. glad i didnt listen.
I bet it looks incredible Adrienne! Send us a pic on our instagram!
I painted my living room and hallway walls bm super white on the ceiling, walls and baseboards last summer. I love the wrapped effect it gives. I took it a step further, using regal select pearl finish on all 3 areas.
Nice! Sounds lovely Ann! Thanks for sharing what worked for you! :)
Just what I needed to hear! Guest bath has a new tile floor. Gorgeous! But the white baseboards (primed only at the moment) SCREAM at you. You don’t appreciate the pattern in the tile because your eye goes to the baseboards instead. It’s wonderful having a video address this issue!
I have done this. Dirt doesn't show as much on baseboards. Great information! Thank you for sharing!
Ooo another good point Margaret!
Absolutely love this look! Can you help with suggestions of what finishes/sheens to paint in different rooms? Should walls in main living spaces be matte or eggshell? What about bedrooms? Desperately trying to get paint colors to my builder and need help please!
Gotta love those Mighty Boards
I wish I could send you a picture. We just redid our home that has builder installed cinnamon oak trim and it looks beautiful. We have kendall charcoal in our living room and Edgecomb gray in the kitchen, dining, foyer and hallway. I was a bit surprised by the blueish undertone in kendall but it turned into a happy surprise. 😊 love your videos!
we love a happy surprise Sarah! Glad that worked out!
I love this simplicity of this one James!
Right? I like the ease of it too.
Great video James!
Yay! I have been falling asleep thinking about this! I started by painting our entrance console and show cabinets all one color. Loving it.Then I planned on repainting walls. Not thinking of changing the color since that is the color through out the house. And wondered if it was ok. Have spent the past few weeks & I finally decided I would paint the wall the same as the newly coloured pieces ( polar white). And if it looked off or looked great, I would eventually do more wall. But when I went in for the paint and a consult, she asked about the color of trim. And then I worried that I would now have to do the trim. But since the color Im doing is polar white, do I really have to pick another color? Until watching this I decided to start with the walls this week & think about the rest later. But now thanks to your video I will do it all the same color including the door which is an unpleasant white. Well actually I was going to do a faux light wood color for interest but I may just do it polar white & later add some color (sand) to it for interest.Thank you for all your fun videos! the best!
I love this look & have done this in several rooms of my home. Thanks for this video!
Yes Kelly! Glad it worked out for you!
I know this video is a year old but my husband is repairing our house interior and he made the choice to paint the crown molding the same color as the walls. I’ll admit I wasn’t a frame but it’s grown on me. I do admit it makes the room looks much bigger.
I plan to do this, including ceilings, to make my rooms appear larger..but I'm going to choose a lower sheen finish I'm happy with for washability for every surface.
Love it Constance! Keep in mind the higher the sheen the more durable the paint. But choose the look you want!
I just moved into a house that did this and I repainted the trim white and it looks SO much better. I was cursing them the entire time I painted the trim back to alabaster 🤣🤣🤣
Haha! Hey, not knocking a white trim over here. There's a reason most people do it!
Professional painter here. I like the idea and sometimes looks good but I would do the trim in a different finish than the walls. Same color for trim but maybe a semi gloss or satin finish for it
Thanks for your input Michael. I like that look too.
Great channel. Glad I found it
That’s what i think I’m about to do. BM chantilly lace eggshell walls and pearl or satin finish on trim.
That’s what I’m going to do. Glad to see a pro endorse this option. Guest bath will have matte walls and semi gloss baseboards. I’m also doing the ceiling in the same color. It’s a very gentle blue grey that complements the patterned floor tile. I want everything in this small space to whisper, and let the beautiful floor take all the attention.
THIS is what I have been needing to make a decision on. Walls, trim and interior doors. I think I may do walls and trim the same, and interior doors a different neutral color. Thank you for the help!
Yes Linda! Happy to help!
I completely agree!!! Thank you for this.
Woohoo! Thanks for watching Erin!
Great advice, thank you!
You bet!
Looks like a good idea. What do I do w the doors if they are dark like the trim? Or do I change my doors to white or natural? Also if I have a blue wall do I paint the trim blue too? Hope this makes sense
I am thinking of color drenching a small bedroom in a darker color but I’m not sure what finish to use. I’m going to do Roman Clay application on the walls which will be matte but I’ll put a sealant on which will add a little sheen. Probably satin on the base boards and trim. Do I need to buy a flat finish too for the ceiling or can I use the satin too?
Ok, so I'm going to paint my baseboards same as the walls. Do I use the same paint and then clear varnish the wood? I've tried this before and bought the same colour paint 1 tin in emulsion for walls, 1 tin for wood and the colour wasn't a perfect match. Please advise.
Great ideas and examples!
Nice! Thanks Magenta!
So how would paint the trim around the opening going from one room to the next where there is a big color difference
Just today the painters finished painting my entire house -- walls, ceilings, trim -- in pink damask, with eggshell sheen. Yes, it broke lots of rules but in my old, run down mobile home it means that the fugly fake panel and gazillions of battens look nice with the new amber oak floor.
Whatever works for you Keta! There are no rules!
Great video! I like the idea but I have 8 ft ceilings and my windows are a taupe vinyl color. I was thinking of painting everything in a light creamy color with the exception of my baseboards and the trim around the window in a taupe to match that vinyl. I would love a video on contrasting trim that is subtle changes with examples of what NOT to do! Thanks so much for your videos as I am learning so much!
Hi there, not sure this will help, but I have a few videos on trim. This one is on darker trims specifically. czcams.com/video/9vE7Fua5GUU/video.html
Thank you! Your videos and your passion are captivating. How about a video on ceilings 😀?
Thank you Kursat! I do have this one: czcams.com/video/u--lho-3N-c/video.html
How do you deal with two spaces where the door trim between the two doesn’t have any kind of stop between the rooms?
What about the accent wall, would that also be the same color (darker), even though the other walls are lighter?
Great analysis. I'm planning to do this
Please do!
I have unpainted wood trim and windows. Could I paint the trim but leave the windows unpainted?
Off white, satin sheen, 80-85 LRV. Perfect for trim.
i have been telling my wife this for years. her trim needs to match LMAO. great video helped me when my battle.
Depends on the Design and the type of Trim.
I'm sorta stuck on the subject, particularly with French Doors and Wide Molding.
I paint some trim and door High Gloss White (that white as it gets, High Gloss), particularly in Traditional Style Homes with Caliente Red, Deep Blue Purple, Charcoal and Soft Black.
I use a Satin Black on trims too.
I would usely prefer to not have trim rather than painting it same as wall color.
But it is always case by case.
Case by case indeed!
What about painting the baseboards close to the same color as the floor?
What if your room is 2 colors? One wall is one color, the other 3 walls a different color. Do you paint the baseboards all the same or whatever the wall color is
The one drawback I can see of this is that it's a lot more work if you want to repaint a room a different colour. You'd have to repaint the trim too, which can add quite a but of work.
I'm also wondering about how this look integrates window frames that can't be painted (like the typical white vinyl) that contrast with the paint.
That's a good point to consider April!
thanks very interesting. I’m getting new casement windows in taupe and would love to hear about matching the millwork color and how to coordinate it with off white walls!
Hi Jayne! Just to clarify, your walls are already painted off white? Or you're looking for a color to coordinate? Are you looking to match the millwork color to the taupe in the casement windows? Or just looking for options?
@@thepaintpeople Hi!!! Thanks for your reply! It’s a new build. I ordered Pella casement windows in fossil (taupe-y) inside and out. I’d like light/whitish walls and thinking about maybe a lighter taupe for all millwork/doors. What do you think? If I go with that, do I run the light taupe crown molding across the alabaster kitchen cabinets for consistency or match to cabinets? I’d love to know your thoughts and any options, thank you!
@@jayneelena4469, while painting the crown molding taupe will make the room appear wider but shorter in my opinion, I think it's what I would do? Wondering what James thinking on it is now! Anybody else?
What about window trim? We have a lot of oak in our home
perfect... I needed an excuse to do less work... thank you : )
Hi James
Excellent work! Can you look at down pour blue, it may be California paint's.
Hey Jesse thanks so much! There's Down Pour Blue by Benjamin Moore. Is that what you mean?
You said about the type of paint for trim is important and directed us to another video but that video is not appearing for me.... what is the video? I have watched a few on your channel now but none say about the paint type
This is a great video! Was thinking about this not to long ago. My concern is if I do an accent wall how would this work? I have trim on bottom and top.
Hi Sue, in that case, I'd do the accent wall's trim in the accent wall's color and all the other walls' trims in the wall's color.
@@thepaintpeople sounds like a great plan! Thank you
Only reason I wouldn't want to paint trim the same color, is people will think I sucked and got too much paint on the trim and that was how I corrected it
If you have rooms that are two different colors (hallway grey, bedroom white) how would you transition the paint at the doorway/door jamb? Or does this method work best if you're completely going one color through your house? TIA
When I bought my house it had different colors in practically all the rooms. What they did was paint the doors to Mach the color of the room and that would mean painting half of the entrance to a room two different colors. It blends perfectly and looks amazing. For instance the guest bedroom is sea green and the attached bathroom is pink, so one side of the door is green and the other side is pink.
😂 I watched another video you did where you talk about why you SHOULD paint your trim white.
Ya got me Lori! I like both!
If there was a Nobel Peace Prize for Painting...this video would win it! Genius!!!
Hahaha! I love that it's a Nobel Peace Prize. Peaceful painting!!!
Many historic colonial houses have the wall and trim the same color. Also they have white walls with different trim colors.
Good point Kummon!
Love your content!! Please review SW Halycyon Green. I’ve done my kitchen cabinets and can’t decide which white to use to warm up the room. (Dark skate floors and gray counters- it’s all toooo cold)! Help
Hmm...what about something like SW Greek Villa?
@@thepaintpeople thank you- I will ll try that- what about Shoji White..? I have heard you mention that one!?
The hyperlink you point to at end of video is missing.
Alright, I'll bite. How to best transition from one room to another with different trim colors? Won't the trim color of the door be viewed from the other room? These photo examples look beautiful, but is it an awkward transition?
Cool to see all the pros, but what are the cons?
What about doors? Would they match the room too? Do the outside of doors match the hall colors and the inside match the inside??
I match them or anything apart from brilliant white
Question for you. What about a accent wall in the same room. Should it be the main color or the accent color
Hi there, if I was going to go this route, I'd likely do the the trim on the accent wall the same color as the accent wall.
I love this idea. I'm just wondering how it would look if you've got one wall as an accent wall...
Hi Sherri Ann, I'd probably do the trim the same color as the accent wall on that wall.
@@thepaintpeople ok thank you!
I think this is only a trend that will be short-lived.
Most trends are I suppose, but we did see this a lot in the 90's too, so...maybe it's back???
Yup
@@thepaintpeople I don't remember that trending at the time. It was always wallpaper.
I love this look, not for every home, most colonial color schemes have this.
I love this look too
What's the green bedroom curtain on reason 5?
Color?
I realize I’m late to the party on this video, but I see a lot of people calling this look “cheap”. Meanwhile, I’m seeing lots of high end luxury homes in my area with this style. 🤷♀️ I’m going for it! Personally, I’m a risk taker and I’m cheap, so either way it suits me. 😂
Love it
Nice Jenny! Glad you like.
Ceilings I like to reduce whatever the wall color is with 50% white
Do you know who paints the trim and wall colors the same? Cheap apartment complexes
Damn. Don't you mean...affordable? lol
Professional painter here with 20+years experience... I can literally count the number of times I've seen something like this on one hand... Out of over a thousand projects I've seen/worked on... And usually I was called in to 'fix' it. It's hard enough to find trim that isn't painted white, but to paint it exactly like the walls is a terrible terrible idea and will not look nearly as good as people think. It looks tacky, cheap, and is reminiscent of a crappy rental property that gets painted as cheaply as possible with just some eggshell paint slapped on the trim, walls and ceilings in an off-white color.
It looks terrible, terrible terrible.. That's why half the pictures had normal trim even in this example video.
It is never done by pros for good reason. It's never done on high end homes, new construction, or even most cheap rental repaints because it is not acceptable. It's not a clean look, it's a bland mistake that will need to be fixed by whoever is unlucky enough to purchase the house later.
Agree…. Totally. I love the contrast and it looks better💯
I think Alex needs a hug
I agree. It will not look good to have various colors of paint trim from room to room. One trim color for the entire house makes it cohesive.
@@stoptalkingpleaseandthankyou I will gladly take a hug lol... I'm just trying to offer my professional opinion based on my first hand experience. I felt it was missing with all the overly positive comments' congratulatory demeanor. Also keep in mind the fact that things always look way better in photos.. So all these example pictures that might look decent will actually look far worse in person. I've seen it with my own eyes, and also had to paint an office room where the homeowner literally wanted everything a dark blue(it was supposed to be some way to relax or focus better as he worked on his pc)... A beautiful intricate wide window with an arc on top, walls, chair rail, a huge 3 column built in bookshelf that went all the way to the ceiling with modular shelving that can be completely customized in the layout (movable pegs for every shelf), crown molding and a beautiful set of French doors all the same dark blue on the inside of the room (emerald satin trim paint for all the woodwork, duration satin for walls, ceilings were flat white thank God).. I literally felt like I was ruining the look of the whole room... What a dumb way to get rid of all the beautiful details. Me and the general contractor repeatedly made sure he didn't want to change his mind... The end result was basically like walking into a room that was painted by someone who didn't want to bother cutting anything in so they used the same color (even though it was of course cut in with the appropriate products). Tacky, tacky, tacky, tacky, tacky. Oneday it will all need to be fixed lol... In the mean time I'm gonna try to forget it, and remember the rest of the house that thankfully got painted normally everywhere else.
Thanks for sharing your point of view Alex!
What about the doors?
What about using the same color but different finishes?
Love that! Looks great to change the sheen on the trim!
Agree!
Nice!
It will camouflage the big trim but what about skinny oak trim… how will that look? I hate my trim!
Hi CM, yes, if you don't like your trim, this is a good strategy because it will make the trim stand out less.
What if your walls are white?
I AM PAINTING MY WALLS OCTOBER MIST WHAT COLOR DO I PAINT THE TRIM.................
Hi Nancy, I’d lean warm like White Dove or Steam.
And a few years from now it'll be the reverse. This stuff wears me out. Do as you please. I'd prefer NOT to repaint trim everytime I change a room color. Thanks
Fair enough Laura!
what about doors??
I think, when you have extensive, elaborate millwork like double raised panels etc., then coating the whole wall the same color mute it down perfectly. It's like someone's welcoming you to a palace by saying welcome to my humble abode.
Love a humble abode lol
Love this idea ! Also there wasn’t a video at the end.
I couldn't figure out where the next video is talking about what type of paint to use on the trim even if it is the same color as the walls. He said you should watch this video next and what is it......stupid way to end a video!!!!!!
You had me until you said I couldn’t use the same paint for walls and baseboards
It is just common sense that you don't paint wallboard or sheetrock with the same paint as you use on wood. The chemical makeup of paint is made specifically to use on a particular surface for both durability and aesthetics.
@@lisas8244 I know… I was making a funny
@@anabeliagarza1805 LOL So sorry!😂
Right? Haha! She's thinking: "I thought this was easier" lol
Interesting but I worry about durability of wall paint on woodwork
I actually really like using the same color but a higher sheen on woodwork.
I enjoy your videos, but I also enjoy white trim! I think this is the first time I've disagreed with you. We're still friends, right? :-)
Haha! Always friends! I like white trim too just pointing out some perks of trying it this way ;)
To each their own… but why hide possibly beautiful detail with all one color. I tend to stay away from trends in personal projects as timeless seems to be fool proof
So what color do you paint your doors?
You can also do the doors in the same color too, if you like the look.
Well I guess I'm screwed ... just painting white BUT it works for us
Not at all Shannon! If it ain't broke...
Never!! Blaspheme!! Blaspheme!!! 😜
I appreciate your ideas, but I enjoy disagreeing … white is a must must must must. But I don’t like big contrasts in colors anyway… so I’m the monochromatic queen, so it isn’t as though my wall colors are dramatically different than white.
And my house has tell ceilings … so I never have the problem of small rooms, so there’s that.
Good luck all. 🎨
Hey, I love a strong opinion! Thanks for watching!
4:50 you said "a lot of people doo-doo."
It looks cool, but not covering up our wood trim
I just bought paint to do that
Is that a good or a bad thing lol
It’s good, although I might limit myself to baseboards. I haven’t decided yet.
Agreeable gray walls and trim and alabaster for the kitchen cabinets…. Hhmmmmm 🤔🤔🤔
You thinking about that look Jason?
@@thepaintpeople yeah I think it will look nice. With some black hardware for the cabinets. Now I just need to find a nice accent color for the from door, because it’s close to the kitchen. The hallway doors can stay the same but a cool accent front door would be nice
I'm a painting contractor with 35 years experience this is almost never done in a practical sense in people's houses. And I've been in thousands of houses.
Hi Mark, it's definitely something we're seeing a lot more of now, making it a modern trend. But you also saw it in the 90's. Like if you watch the show Seinfeld, in Seinfeld's apartment for example lol.
@@thepaintpeople I was just basing it on my sample of people that I do work for and have given estimates to.
I just saw this on an episode of "Friends". Glad it's making a comeback.
White trim looks better and thats why we've been doing it forever
So, Are you painting the walls, or are you hiring someone to do it. Everytime you paint your walls you would have to prime 2x or 3x to cover the boards. So, next time how about you doing it and see if then you think it is a good idea.
Hi Sapphire, I paint my own walls. Thanks for your comment!
@@thepaintpeople Wow! You are the first person with real painting experience. Most designers don't paint themselves and do not understand prepping for paint. I understand your concept but how does that work if you are trying to sell your house. Could you maybe just make the baseboards a few shades lighter?
Although this might find its use in some places, I personally think this kind of technique is generally quite ugly.
Paint the whole thing white
Honestly... I hate this, it gives me the "landlord special" vibe where literally everything is blasted with one color. It feels cheap, one dimensional and completely kills the depth of nice trim and finish work.
you misspelled the word "color"
We use the American spelling for CZcams....
Sounds contradictory (
You want to go with one color to simplify the process, but as soon as you start using different paint for wall, trim, and ceiling - you are going back to same complexity.(
But you lose the complexity of the color matching itself.
I’m gonna have to say….nope. No, I’m keeping it old school.
Nothing wrong with that! :)
please forward this to my wife..
So you save zero time and still need to have a steady hand if you use different paint in the same color...there goes at least 2 of your 5 reasons 🤷♀️
Looks like a prison cell when it is all the same, try 3 to 4 shades lighter and same with the ceiling
Yeah, NO.... White trim creates contrast. Painting all the same color is lazy and looks like Amateur hour
