Documenting the Diaspora: African Americans in South Africa

  • Since the end of Apartheid, hundreds of African Americans have moved to South Africa for opportunity to participate in one of the worlds youngest democracies. The country offers a variety of landscapes which include major metropolitan cities to safaris. The relatively cheap cost of living and the opportunity to be in the majority, has made South Africa the homebase for African Americans looking to live on the continent.

If I was an African American sitting on the fence about Africa and I heard the last speaker's ad commercial, I will immediately book my flight and come see for myself. Well done Dr. Asad and your family. Thank you for shining light on our beloved country. Truly, our efforts to create a safe space for all black people is surely paying off. This is beautiful.

Beautiful work, I spent the month of September 2022 in South Africa, it was my second time in Africa. I was in Zambia in 2012 and in both countries, the sun warmed my spirit. I remember standing in the market in Zambia talking to a seller that asked me who I had purchased an item from and I told him, "I got it from the black man over there." He looked at me strangely and place a hand on each of my shoulders and said, "look around, every man here is black." It was that moment as I looked around that I knew what it felt like to not be identified by the color of my skin, but as the unique human God created me to be. I will be coming back to SA next summer for an extended writing hiatus to work on a novel. I am so thankful that I can tell my ancestors, "I made it back." Thank you for sharing your work.

Meanwhile the *Indigo Traveller* is currently in *Ghana 🇬🇭* showing the slums to the world. These *Europeans* are so motivated to keep the negative views and narratives of *Africa* alive. The mere fact they walked past the obvious developments to go seek out the worst developed area to further enforces their own stereotypes.
*Dr. Asad, Wode Maya* and *TRSA* I want to say thank you all for continuing to change the narratives, and hopefully rewriting history for the next generations to be proud of...👏
