    IMO if your economy is thriving you will snowball faster if you hire mercenaries and fight quick wars with the baron using them. You can have a powerful homeland militia force, but that simply takes a long time. You have to either build the equipment or pay upfront costs for it. You can take -10 import which makes outfitting your militia (which is what I did) quicker, but even then I still think hiring mercs makes the most convent sense. Plus if they die then it does not hurt my economy at all. I’m sure as the game develops further along, and the NPC factions get more aggressive then a strong homeland army might be more favourable.

Many didn't even wear anything but mail also because you overheat with too much padding. Most soldiers simply tried to avoid getting hit in the first place and armor was the absolute last resort. People who re enact would not do this because they don't want to damage their gambeson and they wouldn't wear just mail because they care about bruises and get hit much more than people in a lethal fight would

      @@witoldschwenke9492this doesn’t sound right at all. Mail by itself is useless. Gambesons and other padding were essential to provide a foundation for armors like mail and later plate. Sure, padding wasn’t ideal in the hot summer, when most campaigns occurred, but that just meant armies would fight in the morning, march in the evening, hydrate, and avoid taking the field until it was absolutely necessary. Mail might protect against slashes and some stabs, but the padding is ESSENTIAL to mitigate any attacks that pierce it, and most importantly, absorb concussive forces that would lead to a fatal hemorrhage. Mail can’t do that. Can you send the title of the source you used?

      As cliche it may sound, the game I believe is supposed to resemble as close as possible to medieval times. So very very large cities are much more smaller in scale than people might think. So it's usually one main large settlement surrounded usually by smaller villages that specializes in certain goods.
      But I do agree that it is annoying that they aren't connected, but it makes sense why. People need to bargain with the other villages in order to get things and things aren't free.

    I know most people have no experience in real life military strategy. So I'll give you a bit. Mercenaries are used for 2 main reasons. Numbers OR specialty. They are best used to augment forces. Not replace them. You can higher them for just numbers. But they are best used to fill in holes in your army. For example, you don't have much cavalry. Mercenaries. Need a rear guard? Mercenaries. Shoring up weaknesses is the best use of Mercenaries. So comparing them with militia is a moot point.

    Interesting they become stronger than mercenaries. According to Machiavelli’s observations in the Prince, raising an army of your own citizens is a safer bet than hiring mercenaries or fighters from other kingdoms. They will want to fight for you, for their home, and are more likely to stay committed than bought troops when the times get tough. Mercenaries are also much more likely to attempt to usurp you if their payments fall through or if they are just driven by power, as all men are. Conquest also makes your kingdom richer (bigger houses.) The wise prince will build his own fighting force, preferably professional, and know how and when to use them.

    This ignores the fact that if you have 4 retinue, you can only recruit more armies. However, if you recruit mercs with 4 retinue then you can hire all the mercs on the recruitment page. So you can have like 100 more guys at least for like 200 💰

    • @burningshine5524
      @burningshine5524 Před měsícem

      For trading, you need trading post and set up trade routes in it. Watch out as things you export will go down in price until you wont be able to sell them anymore. And things you buy will skyrocket in price.
      Surplus is extra supplies. For example, if you have 100 carrots in your storage, but your families will eat 70 of them this month, then your surplus is 30 carrots.

      Nah, it does hurt, but if you have a small stockpile of goods, then the families quickly get the working men back and your economy is normal again. It's a setback for sure, but not cripplingly so. Ironically, it does mean that winter ends up being the campaigning season, cause the dudes aren't doing much during winter anyway (all the crops are already harvested and replanted), and there is time for immigration before summer hits.
