I honestly prefer the current layout. Vertical scrolling with the smaller, more compact glances is a more efficient use of space than the bigger views of the beta. And then with the horizontal scrolling glances, you can only ever see one at a time whereas with a vertical layout, it's possible to see multiple data fields at once. Just feels like change for changes sake.
Garmin should provide an option to have a choice of new or old look. I'm very used to the current look and I don’t really need to change it. My view may change once I play with the new look but I don’t want to be chasing a moving target.
The only update I needif tobe able to change the order. So maybe some days I want my training status on top, other days my body battery…
@@Mascha_Eleonora But you don't need an update for that. You can easily rearrange the cards by scrolling to the bottom of the My Day page and tapping on Edit My Day. 🤔
same here. don't want the customization, don't want different "groups". it's straightforward & it works.
Couldn't agree more, complete backwards step
You mentioned seeing everything at a glance a few times. My current view is unexpanded - so I see everything in one glance. What you showed makes it look like I’m going to have to swipe and scroll so much more just to achieve the same result as before. What a shocker Garmin. Thanks for the comprehensive review mate
Great review. So sad that Garmin missed to update their calender. Still useless if you want to get an overview of your activities of the last months, how much running you did, how much hiking etc.
liked the "yesterday" and seven day summary - hope this makes it back into the final version
Agreed. Those were two of the most useful sets of data for me.
I'm sure it will make its way back in. This is still beta. Time will tell!
Liked seeing if my average sleep is 4 hours or 5 hours
Great video! I was totally unaware of that. I totally totally totally agree with the need for them to shift to "batch select" for multiple things, basically everywhere where you could add something you should be able to add multiple things at the same time. And awesome idea about health summary at the top. I really appreciate seeing that snapshot in other apps great video!
Really well explained - clear and comprehensive. Thanks 🙏
I certainly hope the 'Yesterday' card works it's way back in. Most mornings I like to check on that to see my final stats from the day before.
I agree about your suggestion for an “out of range” alert as a highlight when you open the app.
Still waiting for Garmin to remove the Golf menu entry, or make it possible to replace it with something else, like Ultra og Triathlon or Sailing..., anything else.
What makes Golf so special from other activities, that it needs its own specific menu entry?
could do with removing all stuff you don’t require
Golfers got money. Gotta make them feel welcome regardless.
Garmin offers a full line of products for golf. It is a large portion of there rd budget. Makes sense that the golf ap is a core app like running, swimming, etc.
@@jonnyslim86Well, then I would love to see Running, Swimming as seperate individual menu entries.
Aww c'mon bro! You instantly had me running to the App Store to check for an update, disappointed by the first minute of the video haha!
In my opinion is the polar app the golden standard. Nice summary, useful details.
i enjoy parts of both new and old
IF it's new version with tiny visual changes VS old with 7 Day Avgs , I'm sticking with old
I'm assuming the averages will make their way back in. This is beta, but time will tell!
Looks like change for the sake of change.....
Thanks for making it clear that it's good to be part of "the masses" lol
Great review. As a garmin user I’m interested in what they do with this and agree with your comments. It seems “ok” but not great. Bit like the garmin as a “smartwatch”.
As of the amount of useful data displayed, I like the current version the best. Don't have to dive in to see details. They are already displayed.
Thank you very much!
In this new release has Garmin improved its ability to sync data automatically from other platforms such as iFit? The current version seems to bring in the basic activity and couple of metrics but not everything that it could. I have to manually enter the data into the activities area to fill in the missing data.
Excellent analysis, Thanks Dave.
Can i have the option to have it like it is, cause i hate tiles like the pest
Really love your videos and they provide ton of information to us. Just wanted to ask if it is worth buying an high end Epix or Fenix in 2024, or Fenix is due to release an 8 version. I am currently using instinct 2X solar. Appreciate your help.
Thanks! I wouldn't expect a new Fenix/Epix any time soon since they were refreshed with the "Pro" models a few months ago. Still a good time to buy!
Seems like this might be an update just for Garmin to be able to say they have updated their platform and not because they have actually added anything useful. In fact it seems as if the platform will be less user friendly, less flexible, and containing less relevant data.
Hard to say at this point since this is early beta. I suspect we'll see changes once all of the beta users provide feedback!
Agreed. Why bring out an update, even if it's a beta, if it's worse than the existing design? Lazy.
What's great about Garmin is that you don't have to sign up for a specific plan. You can register for an event and have it do daily suggestions based off of your goal time that are more impressive than their stock half marathon limited training plans. It's also neat that these sessions dynamically update based on how strong you feel after each session, and possibly other vital stats.
I'd really love it if Garmin allowed you to look at the daily suggestions in the app and get greater insight as to the purpose of the sessions.
Strange thing is this doesn't work on my Garmin Epix Pro. I added an event, I have the race widget on the watch, with the predicted race time (and my goal time) but no daily suggestions or training plan. So confused. I took the official event from the suggestions in the Android app (Antwerp 10 miles on 21st of April), already did several workouts but still nothing. Garmin support doesn't seem to be able to help me either :( Pretty frustrating. The only thing I can think of is that the event doesn't have a course added to it but one would think just having the date & distance & goal time would be enough?
Does it sync SpO2 reading to Apple HealthKit now? That's one of the most wanted features.
i am very annoyed with these changes tbh. they should let us have the option to keep the old look. i very much dislike the whole "glances" concept they are pushing. on my instinct 2x, i hate the glances, it forces me to do at least 2 clicks of buttons to get to the data, instead of just letting me scroll through the full widget / data. we go to our phone app to see the detailed data, but now they are making the same mistake with the app. i don't want glances in the connect app, i want the details in a dense and intuitive format. scrolling up and down on a smartphone makes the most sense, it works better the way it is now scrolling for me, than the stupid glances boxes that show no useful details, forcing you to go further through menus with more steps to get to the data. the only positive i see with the update is the browser interface will be improved, which has been terrible for ages imo.
Awesome video, much appreciated. I managed to enroll my device but when I check the app it's still showing the old layout any tips?
Try Settings > Beta > Enable Beta
What are your thoughts about garmin requiring an internet connection to sync data from the watch to the phone? I feel like this is a unnecessary hassle. There are times when people are away from data but it would be nice to see the data on the phone. Also the time the servers went down meant you couldn't see anything in the app.
Doesn't really matter to me. This is the case with just about every smart watch out there. For me personally I don't mind waiting to sync my device until I'm back on the grid. I suppose there could be a use case for sync'ing on the go but I'm not sure what that would be.
Yeah one of the most frustrating things for me. I do a lot of hiking/backpacking and needing to be connected to data is ridiculous
Bummer that the Training Plan card is limited to only the Garmin plans. It would be much better if it provided a list of scheduled workouts from the calendar for the week. That way it would also show the workouts imported from 3rd party like Final Surge or Training Peaks! Garmin already allows syncing with those platforms so why not complete the integration?
You can create your own custom plan and it will appear the same way. I only showed Garmin's plans for this example.
I don't know if it's already available, but, is it possible to show in the calendar the Garmin suggested workouts that you have on your Garmin watch? In order to see the suggested workouts in the app instead of being forced to check them in the watch
100% this!@@aitorcristianraposeiras4882
I used to like to have multiple dashboards on the webpage. My favorite part of Garmin has always been setting goals and checking in the dashboard, now you cannot add Goals nor Gear. I hope the final version will fix that.
will infocus be customisable, looks good if we get full custom for which metrics we want
Yes you can customize it or disable it completely if you don't like it.
Once I joined Beta on iphone 15 pro, I cant get connect up and running, please advise :(
Just hope they change Garmin Connect's units to be more like the watches. I use feet for elevation, km for distance, pounds for weight and right now i have to convert everything because Canadian isnt an option on the app.
Thanks to this "update" I've switched back to my old apple watch. I forgot how nice it is to be able to go through emails.
I used to be a big Garmin fan but no being able to use the old UI just sucks too much.
Does the garmin connect drain the battery of the Iphone compared to the Apple Watch?
You didn't show how to turn on this new beta update I am horrible with electronics and every bit of information helps me.
Garmin really needs new designers and UX specialists. From a design & communication/education perspective, they appear to be the worst in the market. Honestly. Fitbit, withings, Samsung health...they are all doing a WAY better job. How can it be that the most expensive watches have the worst UI 😂
Def this. Looks so outdated.
Agree. Garmin is just shuffling static panels around which is really old school.
The redesign looks 10 years behind the market, not a major improvement for me on the previous fugly design. Such a letdown. Don't hold your breath for this.
It's been outdated almost from its inception. I have no idea why they took so long to update the original. Maybe, they just gave up and are only making minor changes because everyone is now on Stava. Lol.
@@davidlynch9049maybe...but Strava doesn't help with a lot of the Garmin metrics besides running 😂
Great review!!! What software do you use to get your iPhone on the screen like that?? That’s awesome
Just screen record on my phone with the microphone on and I sync it up and layer it later in Final Cut. Thanks!
@@ChaseTheSummitahhhhh I figured something like that. Trying to find a way to be able to stream phone like that and do an instructional video in 1 take. Thanks for the tip !
@@GivinItATri it’s possible do some googling about NDI!
I don't own either of the watch but out of these brands who has the best UI? Garmin, Coros, Polar or Suunto?
That's a matter of personal preference. In terms of aesthetics I personally like the look of the COROS interface but when it comes to the actual data I like how Garmin displays things. Whoop also has a great interface.
@@ChaseTheSummit Thanks, I was secretly leaning towards Coros too. About to buy Pace 3 to track ultra races that Apple watch cannot last through.
The newest version 4.76 as of March 2203 has added yesterday and 7-day data at the bottom of the home screen. They have toggles under the edit home settings.
No sms notifications now ! Do you knoe how to fix this ? I tried everything ! :(
Do you know if my new Garmin bike computer will restart my bike mileage by calendar year? I don’t want to keep building my mileage on last years totals.
It should pick up where your old one left off.
@ChaseTheSummit No I want it to only show mileage I will be riding this year. I want it to save last years too.
Excellent video and summary. The update itself, kinda blah
Your video is amazing as always, but in my opinion the previous version looked better. It seemed that everything was easily readable and you could fit everything in one page.
Is this version available in the US only? Because my last app update is version 4.74.2 and still the old one
This is in beta and not publicly available yet.
I like the existing version but would like to see an improved calendar and maybe some widgets for my Android Home Screen.
I want to open the app to 'race predictor' times and my 'VO2 max' score! Aren't these the 2 things that actually show if you are making progess? shouldn't they be front and centre? and as per other comments... I'd like to be able to browse my 'suggested workouts' on the app and not just the watch.
what camera do you use to shoot these videos
Sony FX3 with a Sigma 24mm f1.4 art lens and a Rode NTG5 for audio overhead
Has already launched ? I don’t see any update in my iOS App Store
Currently in beta
But, can you finally set individual units?
Ie miles, Celsius and kg lol
Be nice if gym equipment/exercises were brought online with real life too lol.
I have garmin connect 4.75, and I don't have the beta version...why?
When are they planning to release it?
No date yet but I would expect a few weeks.
Hi there. I only hope, doesn’t matter how new design looks like, they will fix all software issues. So far (in old one) almost every time it’s trying refresh, i have to off and on app to hope refresh successfully, in pc garmin app doesn’t recognise different between synchronising and updating. Without device I can’t see and decide what including new update. To see body battery, stress lvl etc I need sometimes refresh or turn off/ on again whole app and still sometimes not working. It’s for years and a lot of people complain about that.
Another thing I recognised last time
On my 3 days hike offline- on the end of the day without network signal you can forget about synchronised. And list is probably longer…Tom
Have they updated the calendar view? It's awful in the current version.
Same calendar view. No update.
My question as well. Maybe I am just old but having a calendar where you can see the name/description of the session you did is the most important feature when trying to analyse the past and the build up. It is basically unusable now. Web version is ok.
How is it possible today stop counting steps? Somedays it was "active tracking" in menu, but now...
I dropped Garmin and got the Suunto Race
Is there a way to sign up to the beta?
I don’t believe so. I think for now it’s by invite only.
no rush to get a new one,I still prefer the old version.
Thanks for sharing. I'm sure they're scrolling the comments for feedback
I don't like that Garmin has a bunch of sections that are hard to navigate. Most of them are not studied anyway. It would be good if everything unnecessary could be turned off.
what about ios widgets? those would be awesome to have
Not yet! that would be nice.
i am a beta program user in my 965 watch, but u cannot see the beta program button on my android phone garmin donnect. why is it ?
This is a different beta. While you’re enrolled in beta for your watch you’re not for Garmin Connect. I believe Garmin Connect beta is currently under invite only but I could be wrong.
@@ChaseTheSummit ok
Thank you for your response
What about Connect IQ store? It looks so dated and it runs so slow. More than that I think they can live under the same umbrella (Connect and Connect IQ)
I agree. It would be nice if it was all one app.
is this an ios-only update? On Android there seems to be no change.
Currently in beta as mentioned in the video so you wouldn't see this on your device unless you're a beta tester.
@@ChaseTheSummit aah thank you for the clarification. I hadn't caught that.
Why does every “update” always cramming more info in smaller font into a crowded screen.
"desktop copy the widget layout from the phone" do Garmin really think I want to see on a widescreen monitor the same style as on my phone vertically screenfactor? Garmin maybe hire someone with UI design expereince and skills?
Still beta. We’ll have to see what the final version looks like.
The garmin app is good for uploading your data. The end.
They acknowledged (via email inquiry) that they axed the ability to get iphone native alarm alerts/controls on the watch now. Anyone else notice that?
Old one ( recent) app is really uncomfortable to take data from. My old Zepp Amazfit is much more informative and everything logically placed. If I could have the same precise HR optical monitor as Garmin has I would pick my Amazfit GTR 3 instead of Forerunner 245 anyday.
Thanks for sharing. I'm sure they're scrolling the comments for feedback
Oh it is so unnecessary to change something that is working just perfectly. Should fix calendar and add some more activity statistics over time.
How do i go back to the old it just changed one day
I don't think you can
@@ChaseTheSummit in one of your videos didn't you go back and then back to beta version?
I can't see beta in my settings
@@georgetteb7709 it’s out of beta now so this version is the current version and the old version is no longer available.
@@ChaseTheSummit ok thanks for letting me know.
I keep mine in collapsed mode and can see everything without scrolling. This update seems like a downgrade and shows me less info.
If they lose the last rolling 7 day view…I am going to be annoyed. Already going to Strava for calendar views, monthly and weekly views.
I have a feeling it will make it's way back in. This is still beta. We will see soon!
Mine hasn't updated yet so annoying. It's only in beta at the moment.
Yep, only in Beta for now. It will be available for everyone within a few weeks I'm sure.
When will the “New” design be available to the public who have used Connect for YEARS
Still in beta for now.
I like the old version better. The new look is so bland and boring
I dont care for the horizontal scrolling.... And i dont want smaller widgets 😢
You can disable the horizontal scrolling if you'd like. We'll still have to wait for the final version to make judgement!
@@ChaseTheSummit that's cool about the scrolling, but as someone who needs glasses I appreciate the current form of the app. Making shit smaller and more compact is not always the answer 😬🇫🇮
the existing one is way better.
ok, but does it keep disconnecting 3 times a day?
blablabla, ux changes, whatever. just make it run properly and support what you sold, garmin
Disconnects are likely not the fault of Garmin but your phone. The Garmin app needs to always be running in the background otherwise it loses it's connection. If you open a bunch of apps/chrome tabs your phone inevitable runs out of RAM and will close Garmin Connect to run the tasks at the forefront. It's annoying, but a common problem with most smartwatches unless they're made by the phone manufacturer like Samsung or Apple.
I like the new set up
As I said on an other channel yesterday: I hate the new app UI! Imho it is way less intuitive, hides my most relevant data.
For how expensive the Garmin watches are their UI needs a serious work. Maybe hire someone who knows on how to design a UI.
I guess it depends how you look at it. It seems to me they take a utilitarian approach rather than trying to make things pretty which is OK with me. But it would be nice to see a bit more polish in some areas.
TLDR: Same same, just looks partially different.
If it's partially different, how can it be same same? 🤔
@@ChaseTheSummit no new features.
the first 15 seconds of this video is reason why i don't like amoled on sport watches
It takes some getting used to.
For how many years I have been using garmin, I really did hope to get the beta! But nope!
It's by invite only right now and I think only for media folks. Don't worry, it will be available to everyone soon!
I got it and my husband had an invite but declined. We are just regular Garmin users.
Horizontal scrolling is a terrible idea; just stick to vertical and it will not get unnecessarily complicated.
You can turn that off if you don't want it. I personally kind of like it since you can put your most important data there and swipe through it quickly.
How do you turn off horizontal scrolling?
Is this a sponsored video?
Absolutely not.
@@ChaseTheSummit I just don't understand why you think this is better. It's way more work to see anything.
finally
I wonder if it's specified in Garmin's brand guidelines that every UI has to be ugly. I have maybe the least horrible watch GUI (epix gen 2), but it's still "meh" at best. The connect iOS app and the web app are visually outdated and their information architecture is chaotic.
Even the physical objects are ugly. Yes, the one I have looks stupid with unnecessary "sport watchy" details like emphasized screws and bumps and gutters, the watch sweating to look though.
I switched from Suunto three watches ago because that one missed a few key features, but I am almost constantly looking at their new pieces so I could switch back for the sake of the nordic simplicity and elegance.
Also, the functionality (or UX design) shown in the video is just plain stupid. Horizontal scroll here is not really scroll, we will have to swipe through (the difference: scrolling it continuous, swiping is not). The repetitive process of adding a glance/tile/whatever is a joke. Do UX designers work for this company? (I am one.)
No. Retrograde. Just moved things around and reduced data.
Remove "In Focus" cards. Too large with blank space. Shouldn't be on homepage.
Reinstate small horizontal cards on homepage that opens up to more detail as before as text and the eye naturally moves left to right.
"At a glance" is a really poor title.
Reinstate 1 & 7 day data.
Add VO2 max graph to app. It's on the watch.
Reinstate function to remove latest activity from homepage.
I like positive change. This isn't. Sorry.
The "Focus" cards can be turned off in the settings if you don't like them. I suspect the 1-7 day averages will reappear in the full roll out.
@@ChaseTheSummit Shouldn't have been released. Even as a beta it is poor. Garmin is taking its customers for granted.
Pigs should not wear makeup.. 😂 Try again Garmin.
So..., not that much.
Same'ish app, different colours.
Not much improvement for pro use, witch has been a Garmin problem for many years.
Other services do a much better job, using the Garmin data.
What a downgrade
Horrible… less information, only one screen updated… wtf?!
It looks dull, boring, same old, same old. They could've completely given the app a whole fresh futuristic look, but no just shuffle a few things around.
I'M DISAPPOINTED‼️
Thanks for sharing. I'm sure they're scrolling the comments for feedback
Polar users rn -> 😢
Polar Flow is still great! (could use an update though)
I swear by Garmin but damn! This is a 🗑️ update.
Still in beta. We'll have to see what the final product looks like before jumping to conclusions!
@@ChaseTheSummit fair enough. Just little lack of patience on my part since it’s been quite a wait already. I just hope they add more features and more importantly improve the navigation of the side panel to make it easier to find/tweak things.
Wish they integrated most of their features into one functional app as well instead of multiple apps for each thing.
Garmin connect is terribly outdated and not compelling to use at all.
Tried to watch your presentation but had to stop. Please pause for breath!!
You can slow the video down by using the speed controls at the bottom of the screen.
So in other words it sucks
