  • Tens of thousands of people have fled to Egypt to escape the war in Gaza. There they seek to start a new life and put the traumas of war behind them. They hope for peace but also fear for those who are still in Gaza.
14-year-old Moataz Al-Sabaawy is one of at least 100,000 Gazans who have found refuge in Egypt since the start of the war. He has been living in Cairo with his parents and sister since May 2024. His two older brothers were both killed in Gaza in an Israeli attack on the family home. The death of his brothers and his experience of the war have traumatized him. Like all the refugees, Moataz keeps in regular contact with family and friends in Gaza. Every time he calls home, he dreads hearing about the death of another loved one.
Bassem Medhat Abu Al-Aoun owned two restaurants in Gaza, one of which was near the Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City in the north of the Strip. Both restaurants have been destroyed in the war. He managed to escape to Egypt with over 50 members of his family. Escape is not an option for most Gazans. No one can leave the territory without the permission of the Israeli and the Egyptian authorities. Often, the border is sealed off completely. Those wanting to leave need a humanitarian visa, which is issued by international embassies. But Egyptian journalists say there is an alternative route out: It involves paying Egyptian brokers to "coordinate” the departure. The fee is several thousand US dollars per person. Abu Al-Aoun has now opened a new restaurant in Cairo. But he worries about what the future holds.
Meanwhile Israa Ali from Egypt has founded an initiative together with her husband and friends that aims to help the refugees. It’s called "Olives Grandsons”. The organization has over 100 volunteers looking after traumatized children from Gaza. Art therapy, sport and singing help alleviate the children’s fears and trauma. The charity also offers lessons based on the Palestinian curriculum, as most families hope one day to be able to return to Gaza.

Spoiler Alert: DW Documentary doesn't produce and own all the content they air. Sometimes they obtain the rights to independently produced films for a specific amount of time.
When the rights expire, the film is taken down. That's how it works on this channel. DW Documentary uploads and removes content on a regular basis.
But, sure - let's call licensing arrangements part of a conspiracy.

@@TheStockwell Thanks so much for engaging.
I note you feel the need to deploy that easiest of trigger words "conspiracy" in your response. No need for you to invoke any conspiratorial behaviour whatsoever when there is a far simpler explanation. And it does rather go without saying that licensing rights exist and expire.
It seems you view this as an isolated case - perhaps a single bad apple in an otherwise healthy Deutsche Welle orchard?
I can only assume you are new to this channel. DW has in fact a long track record of erasing or negating the Palestinian viewpoint. Including by firing its Arab staff back in 2022 (look it up). If you remain in doubt I recommend you seek out DW's interviews with Ali Abunimah, Yara Hawari and Noura Erekat to name but three Palestinian commentators. I cannot guarantee you will still find them on DW's channel but they are available elsewhere. Do licensing rights also expire on DW's own proprietary content?
But above all, I recommend that you read DW's own code of conduct to which its employees must adhere since September 2022. You'll find it demands lenient treatment be given to the country of Israel. That clause alone ensures that any self-respecting journalist will ply their trade elsewhere. Obedient yes-men, on the other hand, will jump aboard. Hence no need for a "conspiracy" - it's a process that selects for spineless careerists.
Curious and critical adults will see that the "healthy orchard" is in fact rotting from the roots. I cannot say what it looks like when viewed through the eyes of the wholesome ingénue on the prairies, however. Greetings from Berlin.

A simple un-envolved person can't have a restaurant there. Neither can it pay for evacuation high bribes that Egypt demands. Most of those who speaks to media at least have Hamas or IJ among their close relatives or are members themselves. It's OK, DW, I saw you removed my post, so I reposted it to hundreds of my Facebook friends and expanding its reach and content. Thanks! Here it is in it's entirety:
In general, I think very highly of DW Documentary and their global reporting perspective, which is more balanced than US media outlets.
However, this one got me because the feature is about a few wealthy upper middle class families that escaped Gaza in the days shortly after October 7, 2023. One of the people featured is a family man who has built a successful Turkish-styled restaurant, right outside of Shifa Hospital and he lost everything when Israel retaliated with missiles and bombs, restarting a new life and business in Cairo, but now dealing with a traumatized family . Good for him, but I wonder why he waited until hostilities literally took out his lifeblood and home before he acted on his better instincts.
Did he not notice that for 16 years that Hamas was building tunnels and rocket launchers scattered throughout his neighborhood? Did he notice that Hamas had no civil defense plan to safeguard his family? Did he think: "Business is good, I'll build another restaurant right next to a Hamas military base"? What could go wrong? Did it concern him that Hamas offered him and his children no future, other than to build Hamas tunnels and his doner kebab empire to feed the local neighborhood radical islamists? Even if he hated Hamas everyday for 17 years, why didn't it occur to him to seek his refugee status in a safer city?

I think you could have focused on really highlighting the realities here of how little arab nations like egypt doing to support displaced palestinians. most gazans who did not come with money are hoping for support from mutual aid.

One of the main issues Egypt has with the Palestinians especially the ones in Gaza is the biggest threat to Egypt is the Muslim brotherhood which Egypt is trying to quash. Another big issue in Egypt is a ongoing insurgency in the Sinai. Gazans supported Hamas which is an offshoot for the Muslim brotherhood so importing 1-2 million Palestinians could bring in thousands of Hamas fighters who could oppose Egypt or try to take over the Sinai to wage their war against Israel. On top of that it would cost a lot of money to house and support these Palestinians and so there are way to many risks involved to just bring in 2 million Palestinians.

It is not fair that the Palestinians have no options but to give up their land so that Jews can have their place where they can be safe. Why do Palestinians have to pay for what Europeans did to them, especially Germany.

Many unfair places , Turkey invaded and illigal occupy northern Cyprus around 1974, no one acknowledged this as Turkey and Greeks had their houses and land stolen. No UN or Arab countries get angry about this. Tibet was invaded and illegally taken by China, its horrible but no one will lift a finger. Morocco has taken West Sahara and no help either. Putin stole Crimea in 2014 and now more land in 2022-2024. Sundan experience horrible genecide but almost no news coverage or solutions. Palestinians in Jordan and Lebanon are not threatened well , no one cares in the arab world. Kuwait kicked out almost 400.000 Palestinians after Gulf war because their leadership didn't support Kuwait, no one talks about right to return. The list goes on.

What about documentaries about Israeli wounded from Nova, Israeli kids with PTSD from Hamas killing their parents in front of their eyes, Israeli displaced from North and South, Israeli who fled the war to other countries? Why this particular video should change someone's mind? After all it shows wealthy people who were able to pay bribes to Egypt and free the war. Many aren't so lucky. Many died, much more are wounded. And the only reason for all this suffering is Hamas that started the war with clear intention to bring this suffer on their people while they will sit in tunnels in safety. Hamas ideology does not value lives of their people and quality of life. They are able to finish all this everyday - return the hostages and surrender. But then they will lose their power and wealth gained from oppressing their own people. No, they don't want this and wouldn't make anything to lower the casualties, the opposite. The more dead the more people will be on Hamas side. And I claim this because the result of being on Palestinian side is restoring Hamas, what is the opposite of Palestinians interests. So every action that allows Hamas to remain in power is being on a Hamas side, not on a Palestinians side. Israel gave them 19 years of self destruction under elected Hamas government, the moment that movement decided to bring its violence to Israel territory it wasn't their internal issue anymore. There will be no Hamas government of Gaza, for sake of Israelis and Palestinians.

Israel left the Gaza strip to the people of Gaza in 2005 because of people like you.
This experiment (seeing of Gazans can govern themselves instead of making wars) have failed dramatically showing the world that they cannot be trusted.
You can put the blame on Israel because you see from your very narrow eyes the effect of what Gazans have chosen to do.
