  • This short video shows how to adjust your collet closer so the handle doesn't shake and rattle during operation. Its an adjustment many lathe owners may not be aware of. Take a Look !!

Sweet, Joe! This is amazingly timely for me. I have a collet closer I'd bought for my lathe and never mounted yet. In shops, closers were always pre-mounted by the time I used them, so I was unaware there may be an issue.

Excellent tip Joe. I inherited a Nardini Lathe from another department and the closer rattled like a screen door in a tornado. I did the same thing and it made a world of difference. The only problem is any time I have to open the door to access the drive belts, change gears, etc., I have to remove the geared collar and indicate it in again. I made a plug and installed it on the end of a piece of all thread (the spindle ID is larger than the collar ID). I can feed it in from the chuck end and use that to align the geared collar and the spindle. It gets me close enough to eliminate the rattle.

Was hoping to use to get for the closer on my Tormach lathe. Sadly I've already done this. The manual says to get it within 0.001". No matter what I do the wobble stays. Occasionally it'll be fine. Might have something to do with the closer unit itself. I've resorted to unscrewing the handle instead. Keeps the noise down anyways

I've been trying to figure out how to do this on a hardinge for a few years now and this technique unfortunately won't work because that catch gear floats freely. I'm thinking where it gets oh is where the arm assembly clamps down to the large bearing but I have monkey with it and it's still not quite right it can get to vibrating like hell if you have any tips on the hardinge style closer I would greatly appreciate everything

    • @ClownWhisper
      @ClownWhisper Před 5 lety

@@donnerpartysupplies5187 well thanks for the great reply man I appreciate it. I actually only hit the center it on the bearings a little bit better and now there's no vibration at all. I used to get really bad at certain speeds but I ran it up and down and I can't get it to vibrate I tried 3/4 5/8 in 1/2 inch I figured if I can't get it to vibrate at those sizes at full range then I'm pretty good to go LOL
all those ideas that you just gave me I'm going to file that for sure you're very knowledgeable. I got this machine for free believe it or not I mean it's not the most expensive of hardinge machines the DSM59 BUT IT SURE COMES IN HANDY!
The shop they gave it to me should fire all their maintenance guys because they said the thing was fried it's at for 30 years under a tarp the only thing that was wrong with it was the main power transformer I'm not talking about in the e-box I'm talking about the shop power. I don't know the proper terminology for that. And there was all kinds of notes around the machine about what worked and what did not they had the speed controls wired backwards and the speed sensors wired backwards so basically the limits answers did nothing and you could crash the pulley motor because there was no stop to it. Instead they wrote in sharpie do not pass this point LOL how can you be an electrical maintenance guy and not understand a simple diagram or how to trace a limit sensor LOL
They said that the flood pump did not work and all it was was a sticky relay. It's not really a relay I can't think of the Damned name of the component I'm having a senior moment lol but you know what I'm talkin about the relay actuator deal? It was just sticky that was it Jesus Christ these people are so bad this machine was like brand new other than it's paid job I mean it was completely covered the ways we're like a mirror they were so perfect everything was perfect on the thing and they just gave it to me LOL what a deal I got I'm not trying to brag I am consider myself very very fortunate right place at the right time sort of deal
thank you very much again for your help I will print this off and file it

    Hobbyists beware.
Watching too many Joe P and other cool content producers may induce mild
to severe case of CID (cast iron deficiency).
I know I got it. The symptoms may
    include but not limited to:
    ·
Rearranging the back yard and flying 4,000 pound
pecan trees over the house so 3,000 pound machines can roll to the shop
    ·
Tearing down sheds and making I Beam structure
    additions with reinforced concrete floors
    ·
Selling the whole machine collection and starting
a new collection with bigger machines
    ·
Being rewarded for the whole crazy adventure with finding amazing treasure troves
    ·
Running into problems with the new machines that are actually covered in Joe’s videos
I’ve found too many cool, new condition toys to list but the major finds are:
    1974 Bridgeport that looks unused
1971 Harrison 13X40 L6 MK III with a GE hour meter. Manual
calls for 80 hours of break in, hour meter shows 78
Cincinnati Monoset clone, Denver Astro made in Taiwan circa
    early 90’s
Brown & Sharpe No 2 surface grinder with WWII Picatinny Arsenal
    tag U.S.P 2401
The grinders are project machines. They were so dirty; I couldn’t tell what color the B&S was. They have cleaned
up beautifully. The B&S has its original paint and all the ways still have the original flaking. Here
is a sample album of the adventure: photos.app.goo.gl/JzE77Pb17kKyeGBG9
As you can see, the lathe was stuffed in its final resting place with the OEM Royal collet closer in the spindle. I can’t use the chucks, but I can mark where the wall needs a hole so the draw tube can be installed and removed without moving the lathe. A couple of days before this video, I ran the machine and had the problem Joe is describing. Coming from a South Bend and having no real experience, my first guess was a bent tube. Middle of the night worrying gave me the idea to check the runout on the spindle attachment. It was way out. Having no patience, I indicated it within a couple of thou over the notches and with the tube in the spindle. The shake went away. The next day I saw this video. At least when I pull the lathe out to cut the hole and add more shelves, the job of indicating it will be a lot easier with the draw tube out and using the ID.
Thanks Joe for all the amazing cool knowledge you are so freely willing to share. I don’t care if you make underwear with holes in it, I would proudly buy it and wear it.
    Shawn, Phoenix
