Magnetic Aluminum ? ... You Have To See This !!!!

Aluminum has always been a metal that was not thought possible to be magnetized. Not until just recently, was a breakthrough made showing it is possible. I have to imagine, it won't be long until there are many uses for it. Personally, given the option between steel or aluminum, I'd select the aluminum over steel for the weight and ease of machining. Looking forward, magnetic aluminum will serv...

Brilliant Fixture Joe! Turning a difficult part into an easy part!
Thanks again
Very nice work. Interesting. Thanks. So much to learn from you
very good video Mr Joe pie
The skill of a machinist is not in how he runs the machine, it's in how he holds the parts. This is a great "Thinking outside the box" idea.
Great trick. Would it be possible to make a "nest" out of2-component epoxy plaster and cling film (that it does not stick to the part), if you cannot find any flat surface?
Looks to be on the right track. Looks great.
This will certain help the modelli g guys to apply this to models that has metallic content to them. The scales are on average commonly HO(OO)16.5mm, O 32mm, N 9mm besides the garden gauge 45mm other side of scale is much smaller
That is a great looking fixture
Good timing on this. I’ve been trying to part very small round spacers lately and I can’t get two the same thickness
Really cool!
Never saw a scorpion, but I didn't think it was a bug. 0:07
great idea, thanks for sharing
Thanks for sharing 👍
Excellent, thanks
An idea for fixture is glad wrap and green stuff. You just need to shim one side in a vice against reference surfaces, put plastic wrap then green stuff then more plastic wrap in a vice. Wait for that side to set up then do the same to build out the other side. Then you can clamp in the vice with more pressure.
Great tips as usuall! These tips are perhaps even more useful on small manual turret lathes as well. I use mine frequently when making small series of simple parts, quick setup compared to NC jobs. I use the Joe Pie razorblade frequently, really good idea... Sandvik has small thin parting/grooving triangular inserts that are great for these small scale applications. They are easy to regrind on a D-bit grinder for various widths and front angles. I got a Chinesium one a few years ago and never regretted it, makes experimenting with cutter angles etc a breeze.
(Let’s see if I’m right….) famous last words😂
Good fixture,Joe.We badly need some leadding.Thank you.God bless us all.
@Joe Pie The wisdom you shared about work holding is true gold. There are a myriad of challenges gripping such small parts precisely but not distorting precision fit. Thank you.
Why is the fixture stamped with words that look like hardware?
Machinist: "High five, buddy!" Spider: "NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE"
I kept waiting for a jump scare
You sound like James Belushi 🤣
Machining parts is like Painting Houses or anything else, you spend 90% of your time figuring out and doing Prep/Fixture work to make the other 10% Machining go smoothly. Neat fixture Joe, I'll have toss this one into my bag of tricks! 👍👍
Is that part of a whole train set?
Nope. My experience is that they are only aggressive if they have their “youngins” on their backs!
Craziest thing that I’ve seen for a while, but too damn cool.
I do hope your family is safe from those tornado's
So far , we are. Thank you for the thought.
Beautifully done. Thanks for posting this, Joe.
👍 that some mighty fancy chip making. Thanks for sharing.
👍👍😎👍👍
Thanks for the lesson much appreciated
Thanks for the video. I am going to be just that operation next week but couldn’t figure how to hold the parts.
You're a Jedi Master !
As usual, wha a great tip! As a hobbyist, I rely on professionals like you to learn from. Thank you, Joe!
Joe takes his time and does it right. Me, well I tend to the super glue and duct tape school. But in this case, I suspect that the job involves more than one or two truck side frames. Which makes the fixture a production fixture and so worthwhile.
Wow, whoever made those truck sideframes absolutely hit a home run; these are certainly a match for the best (styrene) slide-molding I’ve ever seen, and way better than some of the cast (metal) sideframes I’ve seen in HO scale. 😅 These two-axle trucks (bogies to those in other countries) are typical for EMD railroad locomotives in their “GP” lineup.
Great point on the inverted bridge. One point I have seen several times so I will bring it up since you pointed out the "integrity" of the countersinks and the threaded holes. In the aerospace world that was not allowed. The countersink fixes the location of the c'sunk screws. The threaded hole also fixes the location of the threaded screws. There is no "float" to allow for tolerances. It can be made to work but any typical manufacturing tolerances cause trouble because you have four surfaces trying to align the parts. Chances of all four having a perfect fit (zero tolerance) are slim to none.
How do you get a square peg in a round hole? Ask Joe.
Be glad its O Guage instead of HO or N 😁. I used to have C/Sinks and C/Bores for small screws that had pilot diameters on them. Two flute. Worked great for small screws
As has already been mentioned those cylinders are air not hydrollic. They are the actuators for the air brakes. Great solution for the holding fixture problem. You always are able to come up with something to take care of the impossible.🙂🙂
I think they're plastic 🤣
Machining is 90% trying to figure out how to hold or fixture a part to complete that task. Joe just presented another master class on doing just that. Thanks Joe!
Ah Joe, ya blood's worth bottling! I've often wanted to do work on these little trucks but had no clue about how to go about it? Thanks for the heads up. On another note, I would like to send you a picture of my 1.5 inch scale Northern Pacific, 4-8-4. I just finished the final mounting of the boiler on its chassis yesterday, and I am well chuffed! If you are interested, how can I do that? 😊
✋🏼🇦🇺👍🏼
I was going to answer the question more simply... You hold them very carefully!
Never ceases to amaze me with his forethought when thinking of a fixture…😊
You are a "natural" at this stuff !
wow, that was a fantastic tip. That's thinking outside the .. oh no, that is a box... Great stuff Joe.
Well Joe, are you not going to show us milling the part?
