  • When stress got to be too much for TED Fellow Sangu Delle, he had to confront his own deep prejudice: that men shouldn't take care of their mental health. In a personal talk, Delle shares how he learned to handle anxiety in a society that's uncomfortable with emotions. As he says: "Being honest about how we feel doesn't make us weak - it makes us human."

As a black African, it's incredibly hard for people to seek help for mental health issues. This is a BREAKTHROUGH

Faith it's totally a shame that we're in the 21st century and we're still racists. A black man is a totally normal man... Black as white as red are just colors. All human beings, as we're thought at ethis in medical schools, are supposed to be treated the same, no rationality when in comes to color or religion. So if you black people don't get your rights or being well treated go fight for it. And if a doctor refuses to, then he must be a big liar and no longer considered as a doctor or even as a human being.

What a beautiful talk given by a lovely human being. I've watched *countless* hours of documentaries & talks on mental illness & suicide. I've attended university lectures on human psychology & read dozens of books. And yet, this man's vulnerability, courage, & honesty brought tears to my eyes.
I lost my father to suicide when he was only 47 & I was 24. I had no idea he had been suffering in silence. He never got to meet any of his grandchildren or my husband.
Untreated mental illness causes unspeakable pain; it can also lead to death. Please speak up & speak out -- you might save lives.

I was listening to a podcast that said, “it’s important to live life by design rather than emotion. Basically, sticking to a routine is what allows us to be the healthiest version of ourselves (especially when you're fighting these demons ex. OCD for me).
I’ve had to overhaul how I approach taking care of my brain (exercise, journaling, studying etc) by practising mediocre consistency. Now I try to put in consistent 50-60% effort into my habits - to make sure I do it I began recording it and posting it on youtube channel.
Historically I have a habit of going too hard, not being able to sustain the Herculean effort, giving up and hating myself. So now I’m trying to give a small, consistent small effort everyday. And its crazy how it adds up.

I loved it. This is what I was needing. Many times throughout our lives we believe with the idea that the only way to deal with our emotions is to try to be strong and overcome difficult situations. Many times due to social or cultural issues, it is very difficult for us to ask for help when dealing with our personal problems or simply stress. That is why taking care of your mental health does not simply mean "not being crazy" goes beyond this and I love the way he talked about it.

We live in a society where teasing is considered harmless, but this is antagonistic behavior that is unacceptable. We live in a society where we are being manipulated to think and believe certain things and behave in certain ways. We also live in a society that does not like people being different from what they have deemed appropriate. "They" are people who pull the strings of society. They are society and they tell us what to do. We are puppets and it's no longer a madman's fantasy. Life has become a caricature of itself.

society has gradually degraded my mental health to the point that there is little hope left. But on the plus side, this has resulted in me taking more attention and care to my own mental health, because no one else ever will, not your loved ones, not your bosses, friends, co workers, nobody. Only you can actually care about your own mind.
The problem is that in me taking care of my mental health, it means that everyone else has to go second. And people don't take that too well. Try telling your employer you need time off to work on your mental health, they will take it the wrong way and look to replace you in no time, leaving you unemployed. So this entire idea is great as an ideal, but in practice people don't accept it. They will take care of their mental health and happily sacrifice yours for their benefit. Welcome to exploitation and hypocrisy at its best.

I know what it's like to feel as though you're battling it alone, but don't ever get discouraged. Don't give up on yourself. You deserve to feel good about yourself. Keep fighting. All the best 👍
